Short answer

To add an AI chatbot to Squarespace, paste one script tag into the Footer field of the Code Injection panel (Pages → Custom Code → Code Injection on version 7.1) and click Save. As of October 2026, code injection needs a Core, Plus or Advanced plan, from $29 a month billed yearly; Basic cannot run it. Then import your sitemap at /sitemap.xml so the chatbot answers from your own pages. Expect about ten minutes of work; checkout pages never show the widget.

Nothing on a Squarespace site answers a visitor's question at eleven at night. This guide is for the owners who want something that does: a studio that takes bookings, a shop on Squarespace Commerce, a consultant fielding the same five questions every week. You will paste one script, point the chatbot at your sitemap and test it, with no extension and no developer.

The guide also covers where the setting lives (it has moved), one-page installs, the limits of the Code and Embed blocks, the cookie banner and checkout.

Every Squarespace menu path, plan rule and price below was read on Squarespace's own Help Center and pricing page on 19 October 2026. The walkthrough uses PepoChat, our AI support agent, but the Squarespace half applies to any chat widget that installs with a script tag.

Does Squarespace have a built-in AI chatbot or live chat?

No. As of October 2026, Squarespace has no chat widget, chatbot or AI assistant that answers your site's visitors. Its AI features all work for you, the site owner.

Squarespace's guide to its AI tools, last updated in September 2026, lists what they do: write and rewrite text, suggest SEO descriptions and alt text, create images in Image Studio and build a starter site with Blueprint AI. Clarkson AI chat, which Squarespace is rolling out in waves, edits your site from chat prompts, from changing text to drafting email campaigns. Clarkson is an editing tool, not a way to answer visitors.

For visitor chat, Squarespace points to third parties. Its pricing page describes code injection as the place for code "like Meta Pixel or live chat services", and its Extensions marketplace lists LiveChat. Squarespace's Form blocks collect messages on every plan, but a form only takes a question; it never answers one.

An AI support agent is the piece Squarespace leaves out: a chat widget that answers from a private knowledge base built from your own pages and documents, and hands the conversation to a person when it cannot help.

Which Squarespace plan allows code injection?

Code injection is available on Squarespace's Core, Plus and Advanced plans, and on the legacy Business, Commerce Basic and Commerce Advanced plans. Basic and legacy Personal do not include it. Code injection is Squarespace's setting for adding your own HTML and scripts to every page of a site or to a single page, and a chat widget needs it.

The Squarespace side of this setup is therefore never free: Squarespace has no free plan, and the cheapest current plan that runs a chat script is Core at $29 a month billed yearly or $39 billed monthly. The PepoChat side can be free, with every feature on the free plan and 200 AI replies a month.

Squarespace closed the Personal, Business and Commerce plans to new sign-ups in February 2026, but sites already on them keep their features, so a legacy Business site can use code injection today. Trial sites get nearly all features and most custom code options, yet Squarespace notes that features set up during a trial are unavailable after upgrading to a plan that lacks them, so a trial upgraded to Basic loses the chatbot.

Step 1: How do you train the chatbot on your Squarespace pages?

Import your Squarespace sitemap. Squarespace generates one automatically at https://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, or at https://sitename.squarespace.com/sitemap.xml on the built-in domain, and importing it brings in the first 200 pages it lists as a single knowledge source. The knowledge base is the private collection of pages, files and snippets the agent searches before every reply.

  1. Create a free workspace at app.pepochat.com/sign-up. No card is needed.
  2. Open Knowledge Base → Add New, choose the website option, then Submit a sitemap.
  3. Paste your sitemap address, for example https://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
  4. Optionally open Include / exclude paths and add /blog/category to the exclude field.
  5. Start the import. The card reads Importing, then Completed; carry on with step 2 while it runs.

Squarespace's sitemap guide, last updated in July 2026, says the sitemap lists every page on your site and that new content usually appears within an hour; the demo sitemaps checked here include products and blog posts. Disabled pages, pages hidden from search, password-protected pages and uploaded files such as PDFs are left out. If your FAQ or shipping page is hidden from search, add its address as an individual link, and upload any PDF price list as a document.

Squarespace pages import cleanly because their text arrives in the page's HTML. On Squarespace's Hester demo store, checked on 19 October 2026, the product page /shop/p/kimchi served the product name, its $12.00 price, the sold-out label and the description in the first response, which is what PepoChat's crawler reads. The crawler keeps a page's main content, drops menus, footers and cookie banners, and honours robots.txt rules; on Squarespace's demo sites those rules block only system addresses such as /config, /search and /account.

Two Squarespace quirks are worth handling. The sitemap can list blog category pages, as the Rally demo site's sitemap does with /blog/category/Lifestyle, and those pages only repeat post titles and excerpts, so excluding /blog/category saves room under the 200-page cap. Prices and stock labels are also only as fresh as the last fetch: PepoChat re-fetches website pages weekly, so click Sync website pages after a price change.

Squarespace's automatic /sitemap.xml lists your public pages, products and blog posts, and importing it counts as one knowledge source, even on PepoChat's five-source free plan.

Paste the script into the Footer field of the Code Injection panel and click Save. Squarespace injects Footer code before the closing </body> tag on every page, which is where a chat loader belongs.

  1. In PepoChat, open Widget Setup, click HTML in the list of install options and copy the snippet, which already contains your 32-character Organization ID. The install docs show where it lives.
  2. In Squarespace, open the Pages panel, scroll to the bottom and click Custom Code → Code Injection. On version 7.0 sites the panel sits under Website Tools → Code Injection.
  3. Paste the snippet into the Footer field, below anything already there.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Open your site in a private window and look for the launcher in the bottom-right corner.
<script src="https://widget.pepochat.com/widget.js" data-organization-id="YOUR_ORGANIZATION_ID"></script>

To put the launcher in the bottom-left corner instead, add one attribute:

<script src="https://widget.pepochat.com/widget.js" data-organization-id="YOUR_ORGANIZATION_ID" data-position="bottom-left"></script>

That menu path comes from Squarespace's Pages panel guide, updated in July 2026; older tutorials still say Settings → Advanced → Code Injection. If your dashboard differs, the "Code Injection panel" link in Squarespace's code injection guide opens the panel for whichever site you pick.

Use the Footer field, not the Header field. Header code goes into the <head> of every page, where a script without async or defer is fetched before the browser has parsed your content. Paste the snippet once only: a second copy logs "already initialized" and does nothing. The website builders guide lists the same footer setting on other builders.

Step 3: How do you lock the widget to your domain and set the greeting?

Open Widget Customization in PepoChat, fill in the allowed domains, the greeting and up to three suggested questions, choose who answers handoffs, and click Save Settings. Nothing here touches Squarespace again: saved settings reach the widget on your site without reinstalling it.

The allowed-domains list stops anyone who copies your public snippet from running chats, and spending your AI replies, on their own site. Add your custom domain, for example yourdomain.com; subdomains such as www.yourdomain.com are included automatically. While you test, also add your built-in address, such as yoursite.squarespace.com. The allowed domains docs explain the matching rules.

The greeting message is the first bubble in every new conversation, and the three default suggestions are tappable questions shown before a visitor types. Use the questions your contact form already receives, such as "Do you ship to Canada?" or "How do returns work?". The welcome message examples post has 30 more.

Then choose a mode in the Team availability card. A one-person Squarespace business usually wants "No one answers live chat, we follow up by email": the agent never promises a person, asks once for the visitor's email when it cannot help, and hands the conversation to your team inbox so you can reply by email. The AI answers around the clock in every mode; the customization docs describe the other two.

Step 4: How do you test the chatbot on mobile and at checkout?

Test from a private window on a phone and a computer, ask one question your pages answer and one they do not, then start a test purchase: Squarespace's code injection guide says checkout pages cannot take custom code, so the launcher should step aside there.

  1. Open the site logged out. Squarespace hides the cookie banner from logged-in owners and can hold back custom code in the editor, so a private window shows what visitors see.
  2. Check the phone layout. The launcher is a 60-pixel button 20 pixels from the corner, and the chat window shrinks to fit small screens. Squarespace's Mobile Information Bar sits at the bottom of phone screens until the visitor scrolls, so make sure the launcher does not cover the button you care about.
  3. Ask a product question and a policy question. The answers should match your product and returns pages.
  4. Ask something your site does not cover. The agent should say so and offer your team instead of guessing.
  5. Ask for a person. The chat appears under Conversations as escalated, and an email titled "A visitor needs a person" arrives.
  6. Start a checkout. The launcher should disappear on the checkout page and return when you go back to the store.

Live tests count as normal AI replies, while chats in the dashboard's Test the agent drawer do not, so do most question testing there. If you want the chat after a purchase too, the Code Injection panel has an Order status page field whose code runs after checkout.

Squarespace runs no custom code on checkout pages, so the chat launcher steps aside while a shopper pays. Test product and policy questions on a phone before launch instead.

Can you show the chatbot on only one Squarespace page?

Yes. Leave the Footer field empty and paste the snippet into that page's own code injection field. Per-page injection needs the same Core, Plus, Advanced or legacy Business or Commerce plan.

  1. In the Pages panel, hover over the page and click its gear icon.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Paste the snippet into Page Header Code Injection and save.

Squarespace places that code in the page's <head>, and PepoChat's loader waits for the page content to load before drawing the launcher, so the head works. Squarespace advises against adding HTML to this field on version 7.1, because code there can vanish if you turn off the header's transparency, so recheck the page after header changes. Blog pages also have a Post Blog Item Code Injection field that covers every post in that blog.

To show the chatbot everywhere except a few pages, keep it in the Footer field and wrap PepoChat's JavaScript snippet in a path check, replacing the example paths with your own:

<script>
  (function () {
    var hideOn = ["/landing", "/members"];
    if (hideOn.indexOf(window.location.pathname) !== -1) return;
    var script = document.createElement("script");
    script.src = "https://widget.pepochat.com/widget.js";
    script.async = true;
    script.setAttribute("data-organization-id", "YOUR_ORGANIZATION_ID");
    document.body.appendChild(script);
  })();
</script>

On version 7.0 sites with Ajax loading, Squarespace notes that Google Analytics logs only the first page of a visit, and a Footer path check has the same blind spot. If the launcher appears in the wrong places, turn Ajax loading off, as Squarespace advises for custom code conflicts.

What if you can't use code injection on Squarespace?

Then a floating widget is off the table, and a link is the honest alternative. On Basic, neither block that looks like a workaround can load a chat script: Code blocks run JavaScript only on Core and higher, and the Embed block only pulls in content from services that support the oEmbed standard, such as a video or a social post.

PepoChat's hosted chat page is your agent on its own page at https://widget.pepochat.com/full?organizationId=YOUR_ORGANIZATION_ID, with the same answers, help articles and handoff as the widget. Link a Button block or a menu item labelled "Chat with us" to it and it works on every Squarespace plan. With an allowed-domains list in place, first switch on Allow the hosted chat page on the Widget Setup card.

A Code block covers only the page where it sits, so keep it for a one-off landing page. Squarespace's Extensions marketplace also lists chat apps such as LiveChat; connecting one costs nothing extra through Squarespace, but the service may bill its own subscription and sits outside Squarespace's support.

Squarespace is one of 20 builders compared plan by plan in which website builders allow a chat widget.

Why isn't the chatbot showing on my Squarespace site?

Most missing-widget cases on Squarespace come from a plan without code injection, a logged-in view, a domain missing from the allowed list, or something covering the launcher.

Squarespace's support team does not help with custom code, so for anything the table misses, use the troubleshooting page or ask the widget vendor.

No. Squarespace's cookie banner restricts Squarespace's own non-essential cookies and those of some integrations, but it does not control scripts you add through code injection on its own. Squarespace's cookie banner guide says that if injected code drops non-essential cookies, you may need to make that code respond to the banner yourself, and its support team will not help write it.

PepoChat's widget sets no cookies on your site. The widget keeps an anonymous session ID in its own browser storage, sessions last 24 hours, and a visitor stays anonymous unless they verify an email or share their details. Whether that needs consent is a question for your privacy policy; if your policy requires consent before any third-party script runs, load the snippet only after the visitor accepts.

Will a chatbot slow down a Squarespace site?

Not noticeably, if the widget is built for it. PepoChat's loader measured 7,911 bytes on 19 October 2026, or 3,248 bytes gzipped. The loader runs after your content and draws one button. By default it then fetches the chat window in browser idle time after the page has finished loading, so the first click opens instantly; for the leanest page load, set data-preload="false" and the window loads only on the first click. A visitor session is created only when someone opens the chat.

The script-tag install guide covers Content Security Policy rules and the window.EchoWidget API for opening the chat from your own button.

Can the chatbot answer questions about Squarespace products and orders?

The chatbot answers questions about products, prices, shipping and returns from the pages you imported, but it cannot look up a live Squarespace order. PepoChat's prebuilt integrations cover Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe among others, with no Squarespace Commerce connector as of October 2026, so a question about one specific order becomes a human handoff.

Put shipping times, the return window and contact details on ordinary pages the sitemap includes, so the agent can answer the general question. With email follow-up selected under Team availability, or business hours when you are closed, the agent asks for the visitor's email before it hands over. Developers can connect their own order system through a custom action, which calls an HTTPS endpoint of your choice.

Which AI chatbot is best for Squarespace?

Any chat widget that installs with a script tag runs on Core or higher, so judge the options on what happens after the install:

  • Answers from your sitemap or a crawl, so replies come from your pages rather than a scripted flow.
  • A human handoff to a person or an email follow-up when the bot cannot help.
  • Domain locking, because the snippet is public.
  • A small loader of a few kilobytes, with the chat window loaded later.

PepoChat passes all four with every feature on the free plan, which includes 200 AI replies a month and 5 knowledge sources; Starter offers 2,000 replies for $49 a month. Other widgets have strengths PepoChat lacks, such as messaging channels beyond the website, and the free AI chatbot comparison sets eight free plans side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Does Squarespace have a built-in AI chatbot?
No. As of October 2026, Squarespace offers no chatbot or live chat that answers your visitors. Its AI tools write text, generate images, build sites with Blueprint AI and edit your site through Clarkson AI chat, all for the owner. To answer visitors you add a third-party widget, usually by pasting its script into Code Injection on a Core, Plus or Advanced plan.
Which Squarespace plan allows code injection?
As of October 2026, Core ($29 a month billed yearly, $39 billed monthly), Plus and Advanced include code injection, site-wide and per page, as do the legacy Business, Commerce Basic and Commerce Advanced plans. Basic ($19 or $25 a month) and legacy Personal do not. Trial sites can use most custom code, but features set up during a trial stop working after an upgrade to Basic.
Will a chatbot slow down my Squarespace site?
A well-built one should not. PepoChat's loader measured 7,911 bytes, or 3,248 bytes gzipped, on 19 October 2026. It draws one 60-pixel button, then fetches the chat window in browser idle time after the page has finished loading, so the first click opens instantly. For the leanest page load, set data-preload to false and the window loads only on the first click.
Can a chatbot answer from my Squarespace product pages?
Yes. Squarespace product pages carry the name, price, stock label and description in their HTML, as a check of Squarespace's Hester demo store showed on 19 October 2026, and the automatic sitemap at /sitemap.xml lists them. Import that sitemap and the agent answers from those pages; click Sync website pages after a price change. Live order lookups are not available, because PepoChat has no Squarespace integration.
Can I show a chatbot on only some Squarespace pages?
Yes. Instead of the site-wide Footer field, paste the script into each chosen page's Page Header Code Injection, found under the page's gear icon and then Advanced. Blog pages have a separate Post Blog Item field that covers every post. Per-page injection needs the same Core, Plus or Advanced plan, and Squarespace never runs custom code on checkout pages.
Does a chatbot work on Squarespace Commerce checkout pages?
No. Squarespace does not allow custom code on checkout pages, so a widget added through Code Injection disappears while a shopper pays. The widget still shows on product, policy and other site pages, and the Code Injection panel has separate fields for the order confirmation and order status pages if you want the chat available again right after a purchase.
