What is AI support agent?

Software that answers customers in chat from your own content, takes actions such as an order lookup, and hands over to a person when it cannot help.

An AI support agent is software that answers customers in a chat window from your own content, takes actions such as looking up an order, and hands the conversation to a person when it cannot help. The three parts together separate it from a scripted chatbot, which can only follow buttons, and from a copilot, which helps your staff rather than your customers.

The term matters when you compare products, because vendors apply it loosely. Intercom sells Fin AI Agent, Zendesk sells AI agents and Tidio sells Lyro AI Agent, and each bills a different unit: an outcome, an automated resolution or a Lyro conversation, as of October 2026. Ask what the agent answers from, which actions it can run and what happens when it fails, and the label stops mattering. A product that only answers is a chatbot; a product that only drafts replies for your team is a copilot.

Where the idea runs out: an AI support agent knows only what you give it. A missing page is a missing answer, and an action it does not have is a question it cannot settle. The honest version admits that and brings in a person; the dishonest version guesses. Judging an agent therefore means judging its handoff as closely as its answers, and reading what it hands off, not just how often.
