Short answer

As of November 2026, ten AI customer service tools start under $50 a month, but at 1,000 AI-handled conversations the published bills run from $45 to $780. Chatling Starter ($25) is the cheapest standalone AI chatbot for one or two people. PepoChat Starter ($39 for 2,000 AI replies, three seats included) gives a three-person team the lowest bill at that volume, $49. tawk.to suits teams wanting free live chat for unlimited agents plus AI credits from $29.

Most small businesses shopping for affordable AI customer service have a budget in mind, often $50 a month. The surprise comes in month two, when the bill counts credits, conversations or resolutions nobody priced.

This roundup is for an owner or a team of one to three people. "Best" here means the lowest real monthly bill at your volume, with the seats, AI add-ons and branding you would pay for, and what each cheap plan leaves out.

PepoChat is our product; we include it where it fits and say where other tools are the better choice. Facts below were checked on vendor pages on 4 November 2026.

How we chose and priced these tools

We kept a tool only if a business can switch on an AI agent for less than $50 a month on monthly billing. That rule dropped SiteGPT, whose Starter plan is $39 a month only on annual billing and $59 monthly.

We compared the ten on five things: the real bill at 300, 1,000 and 3,000 conversations; seats; the billing unit; what happens at the limit; and the cost of removing the vendor's branding. We read each vendor's pricing page, help center and integration docs on 4 November 2026 and compared them on the criteria above. We did not run paid trials. For 30 tools sorted by pricing model, see our AI customer support pricing index.

What does AI customer service cost at 300, 1,000 and 3,000 conversations a month?

At 300 AI-handled conversations a month, seven of the nine tools with published AI prices cost under $90 for one seat; at 3,000, the published bills run from $105 to $2,280. An AI-handled conversation is a chat in which the AI agent answers at least once.

Prices and features from each vendor's own pages, checked 4 November 2026. Estimates from list prices, not quotes.

The assumptions:

  • Monthly list prices in US dollars, with the cheapest mix of plan, top-ups and extra seats that covers the volume.
  • Three AI replies per conversation, so 1,000 conversations are 3,000 replies.
  • Credit tools on a 1-credit model, such as Claude Haiku 4.5. Defaults can cost more.
  • Help Scout at the ceiling: every AI-handled conversation counted as resolved.
  • Crisp from its own estimate of $0.05 to $0.10 per AI conversation, since its pay-as-you-go rate is not published; Zoho publishes no AI usage price, so its row shows seats only.

The cheapest reply and credit tools stay near $110 even at 3,000 conversations, while AI sold in conversation blocks or per resolution passes $200 by 1,000. Seats decide the team bill: tawk.to, Tidio, Crisp and PepoChat include three or more people, Chatwoot, Zoho and Help Scout charge for each, and Chatling, Chatbase and Smartsupp cost more past one or two. To estimate volume, see our guide to how many chatbot conversations a month to expect.

Run your own volume through the table before you trust a headline price: the unit the AI is billed in decides the total.

1. Chatling: best for the cheapest standalone AI chatbot

Chatling is an AI chatbot builder with a live chat inbox, and at $25 a month Chatling Starter gives one or two people the lowest published bill in this list at 300 to 1,000 AI conversations a month.

Pricing: The Chatling pricing page lists Free with 200 AI credits a month, Starter at $25 a month ($21 billed yearly) with 1,750 credits and 2 seats, and Growth at $75 with 6,000 credits and 5 seats. A reply costs 0.5 to 25 credits by model; Claude Haiku 4.5 costs 1. Extra credits are $10 a month per 1,000, an extra seat $10, and branding removal $35 a month.

Strengths: It has the lowest one-seat bill at 300 and 1,000 conversations. Every plan has a live chat inbox where the AI flags chats needing a person, and Starter adds WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Telegram.

Limits: The model is the price: the Free plan's models cost 5 credits a reply, so 200 credits cover about 40 replies. At zero credits, visitors see an "Insufficient AI credits" error rather than a handoff. Routing and help desk integrations start on Growth.

Verdict: The lowest bill for one or two people who pick a 1-credit model and watch the meter.

2. PepoChat: best for a small team that wants the AI and the inbox in one plan

PepoChat is an AI support agent for websites with a team inbox built in, and its $39 Starter plan is the cheapest plan here that includes three seats, human handoff and 2,000 AI replies.

Pricing: Free is $0 for 200 AI replies a month, 5 knowledge sources and one member. Starter is $39 a month or $390 a year for 2,000 replies and 3 members; Growth is $149 a month for 10,000 replies, 10 members and no PepoChat branding. Extra replies cost $10 per 1,000 and extra seats $15 a month. An AI reply is one answer the agent writes; replies your team types, the greeting and system messages do not count, as the billing docs explain.

Strengths: Every feature is on every plan except new-lead emails to the team. One person and three people pay the same $39, $49 and $109. At 200 replies, the Free plan hands new chats to the team inbox instead of stopping, and the agent hands over whenever it cannot answer, as the human handoff docs describe.

Limits: "Powered by PepoChat" stays until Growth at $149. There is no self-serve spend cap: paid plans keep answering and bill overage. It runs in the web widget today, with WhatsApp and Messenger in limited rollout and no phone channel, and it has few public reviews.

Verdict: The best value for a team of two or three near 1,000 conversations a month, with the AI and a shared inbox in one plan.

3. tawk.to: best for free live chat with unlimited agents

tawk.to is free live chat and ticketing software with no limit on agents, and tawk.to's AI Assist add-on, from $29 a month, suits teams where people answer most chats and the AI covers the rest.

Pricing: The AI Assist billing article lists Hobby free with 100 credits a month, Growth at $29 a month ($290 a year) for 1,000 credits, Business at $99 for 5,000 and Enterprise at $399 for 20,000. Top-ups cost $30 per 1,000 and do not expire, and excess usage "may result in a negative balance". Removing the badge is $39 a month, or $348 a year, per property.

Strengths: tawk.to's FAQ says "There are no limits to the number of agents you can add to a property", so three people cost the same as one. Growth covers about 330 three-reply conversations on a 1-credit model.

Limits: New AI agents use the Auto model, which tawk.to's model credits article puts at 3 credits a reply; on Auto, 1,000 conversations cost $219 instead of $89. Top-ups cost three times what Chatling and PepoChat charge. Our tawk.to vs Tidio comparison covers the human side.

Verdict: The cheapest choice when people do most of the answering; switch to a 1-credit model on day one.

4. Chatwoot: best for an omnichannel inbox with AI that cannot overspend

Chatwoot is an open-source customer support inbox for chat, email and social channels, and Chatwoot's Captain AI agent comes with credits on every paid cloud plan from $19 an agent a month.

Pricing: Hacker is free for 2 agents and 500 conversations a month, without Captain. Startups is $19 per agent a month with 300 Captain credits, Business $39 with 500 and Enterprise $99 with 800. Extra credits cost $20 per 1,000, and Chatwoot's AI credits article counts "An assistant reply to a customer" as one credit.

Strengths: All channels are on Startups, which Chatwoot gives free to open-source projects. At zero credits, new conversations "go straight to the team", so there is no surprise overage.

Limits: Seats are per agent: three people pay $117 at 1,000 conversations. Included credits are one pool per account and do not carry over, bought credits expire after 6 months, and nothing tops up automatically.

Verdict: A good buy for a team that wants a full inbox first and capped AI second.

5. Crisp: best for four seats at one flat price

Crisp is a shared inbox for chat, email and social messages, and Crisp's Mini plan at $45 a month per workspace includes four seats and a small allowance of Hugo AI credits.

Pricing: Free has 2 seats and no AI. Mini is $45 a month with 4 seats and $5 of AI credits, "around 90 automated conversations"; Essentials is $95 with 10 seats and $25 of credits; Plus is $295. Crisp's Hugo billing article says credits are token-based and a Hugo conversation "costs around $0.05 to $0.10 USD".

Strengths: Four seats and some AI come in one price, so three people pay the same as one. With pay-as-you-go off, Hugo stops and chats go to your operators.

Limits: Past about 90 conversations you are on pay-as-you-go at a rate Crisp does not publish, so our totals are ranges. On Mini, Hugo learns from one website domain and one file; the knowledge base, workflows and analytics need Essentials, and white labelling needs Plus.

Verdict: Good value for a small team with modest AI volume; get the pay-as-you-go rate in writing.

6. Zoho SalesIQ: best for teams already on Zoho

Zoho SalesIQ is Zoho's live chat and visitor engagement tool, and Zoho SalesIQ's Enterprise plan at $25 an operator a month lists a generative Answer Bot that you can train on your own web pages.

Pricing: Free has 3 operators and no chatbot. Basic is $10 an operator a month ($7 yearly), Professional $17 and Enterprise $25 ($20) with 200,000 bot sessions. The pricing page lists a "Gen AI-driven chatbot powered by in-built Zia or BYOK third-party AI" under Enterprise and publishes no AI usage fee.

Strengths: The Enterprise seat includes the generative bot, which answers from SalesIQ articles, FAQs, web pages or Zoho Desk, along with visitor tracking and Zoho CRM data in the same console.

Limits: We rank it sixth because you cannot budget the AI from the website: Zia Agents, from Basic, have no published usage price either, and your own OpenAI or Anthropic key means a separate bill.

Verdict: A low seat price for a Zoho shop; get the AI usage terms from sales before you count on $25.

7. Chatbase: best for model choice and AI actions on a starter plan

Chatbase is an AI agent builder that trains one agent on your website, files and Notion and lets you pick the model, and Chatbase's Hobby plan at $40 a month is the entry point.

Pricing: No free plan is listed, only a 7-day trial. Hobby is $40 a month ($32 yearly) with 700 message credits and 2 members; Basic is $150 with 4,000 credits and 3 members. A reply costs 1 to 5 credits by model, and a reply that runs an action doubles them. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000, branding removal $99 a month and an extra member $25.

Strengths: The model menu spans OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others, and Hobby includes 5 AI actions per agent, Shopify, Calendly, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

Limits: The Helpdesk inbox for human takeover, Stripe and help desk integrations start on Basic at $150. Top-ups cost four times Chatling's rate, so the bill climbs past about 230 conversations a month.

Verdict: Worth $40 for a builder who wants model choice; past a few hundred conversations it stops being cheap.

8. Smartsupp: best for low AI volume on a shop website

Smartsupp is a live chat tool for online shops whose Mira AI agent is sold in blocks of 100 conversations at $20 a month, and Smartsupp lets you add Mira to any plan, including Free.

Pricing: The Smartsupp pricing page lists Free with 1 operator and 25 conversations a month, Solo at $24 a month ($17 yearly) and Plus at $35 ($25) with 3 operators. Mira costs $20 per 100 AI conversations a month ($16 yearly), up to 5,000. "Each unique visitor session that the AI Agent responds to is counted as one conversation."

Strengths: Entry is $20, a long chat costs the same as a short one, and WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram sit beside live chat even on Free.

Limits: At $0.20 per AI conversation, 1,000 conversations cost $224 with a Solo seat, and returning visitors count again. Mira learns from up to 20 website pages, 30 Q&A pairs and a product feed, and answers only in the website widget. We priced Solo, as Free's 25-conversation cap may include AI chats. The branding "cannot be removed or hidden on any plan".

Verdict: Fine at 100 to 200 AI conversations a month; expensive beyond that.

9. Tidio: best for testing an AI agent on a free live chat plan

Tidio is live chat and help desk software for small online stores with 10 seats on its free plan, and Tidio's Lyro AI agent is a separate quota you can buy on that free plan from $39 a month.

Pricing: On monthly billing, the Tidio pricing page gives Free 10 seats, 50 billable conversations and 50 Lyro conversations once; Starter is $29. Lyro costs $39 for 50 conversations, $210 for 300 and $700 for 1,000 a month; above that is a custom plan. A Lyro conversation is one with "at least one reply from our AI Agent".

Strengths: Ten free seats is generous, and Lyro does not charge for a chat it hands to a person immediately.

Limits: Lyro alone is $700 at 1,000 conversations. Every chat a person answers uses one of Free's 50 billable conversations, and at the limit you cannot reply until the month resets or you upgrade. Monthly plans move up a tier at 95% of a quota unless you switch that off, and branding removal is a $20 Growth add-on.

Verdict: Use the free plan to test Lyro; at volume, it is the second most expensive here.

10. Help Scout: best for a full help desk that pays only for resolved chats

Help Scout is a shared inbox and help desk whose Scout AI agent bills $0.75 only for conversations it resolves, which suits a team that needs the help desk and sends the AI a modest volume.

Pricing: Standard is $30 a user a month, or $25 billed annually, the page's default; Plus is $54 ($45) and Pro $90 ($75) with a 10-user minimum. Free has 5 users and 100 contacts a month, with AI only as a 3-month trial. The AI resolutions article bills "$0.75 per resolution", a resolution being "a single AI chat session that is resolved without help from a human".

Strengths: You pay nothing for chats the AI fails to resolve, and a monthly spending limit switches it off at your cap.

Limits: The bill rises as the AI improves: 1,000 resolutions add $750, so one user can reach $780. At a 50% resolution rate it is $405.

Verdict: Choose it for the help desk; past a couple of hundred AI resolutions a month, a flat AI plan costs less.

Is a per-reply or per-conversation price cheaper?

A per-reply price is cheaper for typical support chats, because three or four replies at an overage rate of $0.01 each cost less than one conversation at $0.20 to $0.70. A per-conversation price bills each chat the AI joins once, however long it runs, so it only wins on very long chats.

PepoChat's $10 per 1,000 replies is one cent a reply, so Smartsupp's $0.20 equals 20 replies and Tidio's $0.70 equals 70. The bill at 1,000 conversations a month by chat length:

Replies per conversationPepoChat (per reply)Chatling (per credit)tawk.to (per credit)Tidio Lyro (per conversation)
2$39$35$59$700
3$49$45$89$700
5$69$65$99$700

Prices from each vendor's own pages, checked 4 November 2026. One seat, monthly billing, 1-credit models.

The same reply can cost 1 credit or 25; our post on what one support conversation costs in API tokens explains the token prices underneath.

What hidden costs push a cheap AI chatbot past $50?

Six costs push a cheap plan past $50: per-resolution meters, AI sold as an add-on, seats, branding, annual prices shown first and model multipliers.

A white calculator, scattered coins and a red zip wallet with a banknote tucked under it on a marble table
Each hidden cost is small on its own; together they turn a $25 plan into a $100 one.

Per-resolution meters. Resolution-based pricing charges each time the vendor counts a conversation as resolved by the AI, so the bill rises as your knowledge base improves, and the rule differs by vendor, as our comparison of chatbot resolution definitions shows.

AI sold as an add-on. At tawk.to, Tidio, Smartsupp and Help Scout the plan buys the inbox and the AI is a second meter.

Seats. Count everyone who logs in before comparing per-agent prices.

Branding. Removal runs from $35 a month at Chatling and $39 per site at tawk.to to a $295 plan at Crisp, and Smartsupp does not offer it. On PepoChat it means Growth at $149, the weak spot of our own Starter plan.

Annual prices shown first. Tidio, Chatbase, Smartsupp and Help Scout open their pricing pages on annual rates, so switch the toggle to monthly; SiteGPT's $39 Starter is annual only.

Model multipliers and stops. tawk.to defaults to a 3-credit model, Chatbase doubles credits when an action runs and Chatling ranges from 0.5 to 25 a reply. At zero, Chatling and Chatbase show visitors an error, Crisp and Chatwoot hand chats to people, and PepoChat's paid plans bill overage. Our free AI chatbot comparison lists each free tier's limits.

Which one should you choose?

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest AI customer service software?
As of November 2026, Chatling Starter at $25 a month is the cheapest standalone AI chatbot with published usage prices, and it costs about $45 at 1,000 conversations on a 1-credit model. PepoChat Starter at $39 includes 2,000 AI replies and three seats. Zoho SalesIQ Enterprise is $25 an operator but does not publish what its generative AI costs.
Is there a free AI chatbot for customer service?
Yes. PepoChat's free plan includes 200 AI replies a month with every feature and hands new chats to the team inbox at the cap. Chatling's 200 monthly credits cover about 40 replies on its free models, tawk.to's 100 about 33 on its default model, and Tidio gives 50 Lyro conversations once, not monthly. Crisp, Chatwoot and Zoho SalesIQ have free plans without AI.
What does an AI chatbot cost per month for a small business?
For one to three people and about 1,000 AI-handled conversations a month, expect $45 to $150 on reply or credit pricing as of November 2026: Chatling $45 to $55, PepoChat $49, Chatwoot $79 to $117, tawk.to $89 and Chatbase $150. AI sold in conversation blocks or per resolution, at Smartsupp, Tidio and Help Scout, costs $224 to $780 at the same volume.
Why do AI chatbots charge per resolution?
Per-resolution pricing ties the bill to work the AI finishes: you pay only when a conversation ends without a person, such as Help Scout's $0.75 per resolution. The catch is that the bill grows as your AI improves, and each vendor defines a resolution differently, so read the help center rule and set a monthly spending cap before you switch it on.
Is a per-reply or per-conversation price cheaper?
For most support chats, per-reply pricing is cheaper. At $0.01 per extra reply, a three-reply conversation costs about three cents, while per-conversation AI add-ons charge $0.20 at Smartsupp and $0.70 at Tidio's 1,000-conversation tier. Per-conversation pricing only wins when a chat runs past about 20 replies, which support conversations rarely do.
Do cheap AI chatbots remove branding?
Rarely on the entry plan. As of November 2026, Chatling charges $35 a month, tawk.to $39 a month per site and Chatbase $99 a month; Tidio needs its Growth plan plus a $20 add-on, Crisp needs the $295 Plus plan and PepoChat needs Growth at $149. Smartsupp's branding cannot be removed on any plan.
