Best AI Chatbot for WooCommerce Stores in 2026: 8 Tools Compared
Eight AI chatbots for WooCommerce compared on live order lookup, answers from your pages, handoff, WordPress plugin health and October 2026 prices.

Short answer
As of October 2026, the best AI chatbot for a WooCommerce store reads a live order, answers from your shipping and returns pages, and hands hard cases to a person. Five of the eight tools compared here check order status without custom code: PepoChat on its free plan, and Crisp, tawk.to, AI Engine and WoowBot on paid plans or add-ons. Tidio and Chatbase need an API action you build, and Gorgias shows WooCommerce orders only to agents.
"Where is my order?" has no answer on a policy page. The status lives in WooCommerce, changes as the parcel moves and differs for every shopper, so a useful chatbot reads the order itself, answers policy questions from your own pages and passes anything awkward to a person with the conversation attached.
The comparison below is for WooCommerce merchants who run support themselves or with a small team. It judges eight tools a WordPress store would realistically shortlist, two of them WordPress-native plugins, on live order lookup, answers from your content, human handoff, plugin health and the price at which the AI actually works.
Every capability and price was read from the vendor's own pages on 19 October 2026, and plugin figures from the WordPress.org directory the same day. PepoChat is our product and is held to the same standard. On Shopify? Our best AI chatbot for Shopify comparison is the counterpart.
What should an AI chatbot for a WooCommerce store do?
A WooCommerce chatbot has four jobs: look up a real order, answer policy questions from your own pages, hand the conversation to a person when it cannot help, and never invent a delivery date, a discount or a refund. The first job is what separates the tools on this page.
A live order lookup is a read-only request from the chatbot to your store, usually through the WooCommerce REST API, that returns the current status of one order while the shopper waits. Without one, "has my order shipped?" becomes a ticket for the morning.
An AI support agent combines the four jobs: it searches your knowledge base for every answer, calls tools such as the order lookup, and escalates to your team with the transcript when the answer is not there. Shipping zones, the returns window and refund times live on pages the bot must read, and our list of ecommerce chatbot questions gives twelve test questions to put to every tool you trial.
Stock is the awkward case. A bot that learned your product pages last week can quote last week's availability, so leave exact stock to a catalog sync, such as Tidio's product recommendations, or to the product page itself.

How did we compare the eight tools?
We checked five things for each tool on 19 October 2026, using only vendor pages and the WordPress.org directory:
- Live order lookup. Does a shopper get an order's status in the chat, and at what cost in code, tier or add-on?
- Answers from your content. Does the AI answer from your pages and files?
- Human handoff. Where does a conversation go when the AI cannot help?
- Plugin health. Installs, last update, tested-up-to version and rating.
- Price of the AI. The cheapest plan on which the AI and the order lookup both work.
Helpdesk suites such as Zendesk and HubSpot are left out. Both sell their AI agents on paid seats with a per-resolution charge, as our alternatives pages found in early October 2026, and the WooCommerce connector in HubSpot's marketplace, built by the partner MakeWebBetter, syncs orders into the CRM as deals rather than answering shoppers. Our Zendesk alternative and HubSpot Breeze alternative pages cover both suites.

Which WooCommerce chatbot plugins are actively maintained?
Four of the seven tools with a WordPress.org plugin shipped an update in the last two months. tawk.to's plugin dates from January 2026, and Crisp's and Chatbase's from spring 2025; WordPress.org warns on both of those pages that the plugin "hasn't been tested with the latest 3 major releases" of WordPress.
| Tool | WordPress.org plugin | Active installs | Last updated | Tested up to | Rating (reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI Engine | ai-engine | 90,000+ | 17 Oct 2026 | 7.1.3 | 4.9 (871) |
| tawk.to | tawkto-live-chat | 100,000+ | 14 Jan 2026 | 6.9.10 | 4.6 (142) |

| Gorgias | None in the directory | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed |
Read from the WordPress.org plugin directory on 19 October 2026.
Tested up to is the newest WordPress version a developer says the plugin has been tested with; WordPress 7.1.3 is the current release. Install counts are rounded bands that measure a widget's popularity on WordPress, not its WooCommerce features.
Two rows need context. Crisp's WooCommerce connection is a separate Crisp for WooCommerce plugin downloaded from the Crisp app, and PepoChat's plugin, listed on 5 October 2026, is too new for reviews, so judge it on a trial.
Tidio: Lyro answers and product cards, with an order lookup you build
Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk suite whose AI agent, Lyro, can recommend products straight from your WooCommerce catalog. Agents can send product cards in the chat, and Lyro's recommendations skip out-of-stock items and show an Add to cart button; that feature needs a paid Lyro quota or the 7-day trial.
Order status is another matter. Tidio's ready-made order status template is for Shopify, so on WooCommerce you build a Lyro Action, an HTTP request to your store's API that Tidio's help center pitches at advanced users and developers; Free allows one Action and the Lyro package three. As of October 2026, Free includes 50 Lyro conversations once, and Lyro then starts at $32.50 a month for 50 AI conversations on annual billing.
Who it suits: a store that wants people on live chat first, catalog suggestions, and a developer for the order lookup. See Tidio vs Crisp vs PepoChat for the live chat side.
Crisp: Hugo reads WooCommerce orders, from $45 a month
Crisp is a shared inbox for chat, email and messaging apps, and its AI agent, Hugo, connects to WooCommerce without code. Crisp's help center lists a one-click WooCommerce integration with a Get order tool that retrieves an order's status, items and delivery information, and a setting that makes Hugo verify the customer's identity before using a tool. Human agents also see order history in the Crisp inbox and can handle refunds there.
Two caveats apply. The connection runs through the separate Crisp for WooCommerce plugin, and the help article does not say which plan the order tool needs. As of October 2026, Free has two seats and no AI credits; Hugo starts on Mini at $45 a month per workspace with $5 of AI credits, about 90 automated conversations by Crisp's estimate; the knowledge base and the WhatsApp and Instagram inbox start on Essentials at $95. Use the 14-day trial to confirm the order tool on the plan you would buy.
Who it suits: a store with two to ten people in one inbox whose customers also write by email, WhatsApp or Instagram.
tawk.to: free live chat, with WooCommerce order search on paid AI plans
tawk.to gives its live chat software away and sells AI separately as AI Assist, which now connects to WooCommerce directly. The help center guide, updated in October 2026, adds a WooCommerce REST API key under Automations, Integrations and enables a WooCommerce tool that lets shoppers search products, check order status and create orders, falling back to other knowledge sources when a search finds nothing.
The integration needs a paid AI Assist plan. Growth is $29 a month or $290 a year for 1,000 message credits, 500 crawled pages and up to 1,000 API calls for integrations. The default Auto model costs 3 credits a reply, so Growth covers about 333 Auto replies before extra credits at $30 per 1,000. The guide offers Read or Write keys, and Read is the safer choice for a support bot.
Who it suits: a store where people answer most chats for free and the AI covers evenings. Our tawk.to vs Tidio comparison breaks down how each charges for AI.
Gorgias: a helpdesk whose AI Agent does not support WooCommerce
Gorgias is an ecommerce helpdesk whose automation is built around Shopify, and on WooCommerce it is a ticketing tool with order data for agents, not an AI chatbot. The ticket sidebar shows the customer's WooCommerce orders, with order value and payment status, yet Gorgias's documentation says you cannot create, edit, cancel or refund WooCommerce orders from it, and its compatibility table marks AI Agent, Flows and Order Management as not supported for WooCommerce stores.
As of October 2026 there is no free plan, only a 7-day trial; Starter is $10 a month for 50 tickets, billed monthly, and Basic is $60, or $50 on annual billing, for 300 tickets. Our Gorgias alternative page covers its Shopify strengths.
Who it suits: a WooCommerce team that wants a full helpdesk with order context beside every ticket and will put its AI elsewhere.
Chatbase: a flexible AI agent without a WooCommerce connector
Chatbase is a standalone AI agent builder with a choice of models and a Shopify integration, but its documentation lists no WooCommerce integration. The WooCommerce route is a Custom Action that calls an API you choose: pointed at the WooCommerce REST API with a read-only key, it can report an order's status, but the request, the fields and the identity check are yours to design.
As of 19 October 2026 the pricing page lists no free plan. Hobby is $40 a month, or $32 billed yearly, for 700 message credits, 5 AI actions per agent, 2 members and a 7-day trial, and Chatbase's own helpdesk inbox starts on Standard at $150 a month.
Who it suits: a developer-led store that wants model choice and will build the order action; the Chatbase alternative page compares it with PepoChat.
AI Engine: an AI framework inside WordPress, with a paid WooCommerce add-on
AI Engine by Meow Apps is the most-reviewed plugin here, with 90,000+ installs and a 4.9 rating from 871 reviews. The plugin runs inside WordPress on your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or other API key, so you pay the provider directly. The free version builds chatbots; Pro, from $69 a year for one site, adds function calling and embeddings, a knowledge base built from your content and PDFs in a vector database you connect.
For orders, Meow Apps sells Woo Basics, an add-on from $9 a year for one site that it says lets customers check order status and history in the chat. Woo Basics relies on function calling, which the AI Engine product page lists under Pro, so plan on Pro too. The add-on page does not say how a shopper proves an order is theirs, and the listing describes saved discussions but no human handoff or team inbox.
Who it suits: a technical owner who wants everything inside WordPress and can manage API keys and usage costs.
WoowBot: a WooCommerce-only chatbot with order status in Pro
WoowBot from QuantumCloud is built only for WooCommerce. The free plugin is a product-search bot that lets shoppers email the shop, its listing says it can use OpenAI or Gemini to answer from your site, and the same listing marks order status as a Pro feature. Pro starts at $49 a year for one site, and its Order Status button can display the order's customer notes, which QuantumCloud says can carry tracking information.
WoowBot is small, with 1,000+ installs, but was updated on 19 October 2026. Neither the listing nor the vendor site explains how a guest proves an order is theirs, so test that in the demo. Human live chat through Slack is on the Master plan at $189 a year.
Who it suits: a small store that wants a shopping assistant inside WordPress for a fixed yearly fee.
PepoChat: order lookup, a team inbox and human handoff on the free plan
PepoChat is an AI support agent for websites with a team inbox built in, and its WooCommerce actions are on the free plan. Install the PepoCloud AI Support Agent plugin, paste your Organization ID under Settings → PepoCloud Agent, and connect WooCommerce with a read-only REST API key. One action looks up an order by number and confirms the returned number matches; the other lists up to three recent orders for an email address.
Every feature is on the free plan: 200 AI replies a month, 5 knowledge sources, one member and the team inbox. Starter is $49 a month for 2,000 replies and 3 members; Growth is $149 for 10,000 replies, 10 members and no PepoChat branding. The knowledge base comes from a crawl of up to 200 pages, counted as one source, plus files and Q&A pairs, and the agent escalates to your team inbox when it finds nothing relevant or the shopper asks for a person.
The limits are real. The plugin has fewer than 10 installs and no reviews yet, the widget is web only with no email, WhatsApp or Instagram channel, and the agent reads order status, not items, addresses or tracking numbers, and cannot cancel, edit or refund an order. The WordPress page, the plugin docs, which also cover hiding the widget on /checkout, and the WooCommerce integration docs show the setup.
Who it suits: a one-to-five person store whose questions arrive on the website and that wants order status answered at night, a person in the loop by morning and no per-conversation meter.
How do you set up WooCommerce order lookup safely?
Give the chatbot a read-only key, let it see only the fields a shopper needs, decide what a stranger could learn from it, and keep refunds with people. The steps use PepoChat's names, but the checks apply to any tool here.
- In WordPress, open WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → REST API → Add key, choose an administrator as the user and set Permissions to Read.
- Click Generate API key and copy the consumer key and secret at once, because WooCommerce shows the secret only once.
- Confirm the store runs on HTTPS and that Settings → Permalinks is not set to Plain, or the REST routes do not exist.
- Paste the key, the secret and your store domain into Integrations → WooCommerce and tick only the lookups you want.
- Test the action with a real order number, then switch it on.
PepoChat's actions pass the AI only the fields they list: status, dates, total, currency and payment method for one order, and number, status, date and total for up to three orders found by email. With those lists in place, addresses, items and tracking numbers never reach the model; an empty list would pass the whole response.
WooCommerce order numbers count upwards, so a lookup by number with no other check lets anyone who guesses a number hear that order's status and total. PepoChat's docs say so and advise keeping only the email lookup enabled if that matters to you. Neither lookup is gated by verification. Adding "only use this after the visitor has verified their email" to an action's when-to-use text makes the agent ask for the code, but the agent cannot confirm the visitor finished, so treat it as a speed bump, not a lock.
A verified visitor is a shopper who has confirmed an email address in the chat with a six-digit code that expires after 10 minutes. In PepoChat that unlocks meeting memory, bookings with the verified name and email, and an emailed transcript, not the order lookups. An email is harder to guess than an order number, but typing one proves nothing, and the email lookup runs on whatever address is typed, so its answer should be one you would give anyone who knows the address. The visitor verification docs list the rules, and our guide to chatbot customer verification covers what to reveal before and after the check. Elsewhere, Crisp offers a per-tool identity check for Hugo, tawk.to tells you to review your verification process, and Tidio makes identity checks on custom actions your responsibility.
Refunds belong with people. PepoChat runs actions at least once, so a rare retry can repeat a write; refunds and payments are never wired as actions, and a read-only key could not issue one anyway. Gorgias cannot touch WooCommerce orders from a ticket either, and Crisp's refund feature sits with the human agents in its inbox.

What to do next
Count last month's support questions by type. If order status is most of them, the order lookup decides the tool, and the order status walkthrough shows the WooCommerce key setup and the tests to run. The WordPress chatbot guide covers the plugin install and caching. To try PepoChat, create a free workspace, import your store as one knowledge source, install the plugin and connect WooCommerce with a read-only key, then compare the plans once you know your volume.
Frequently asked questions
- Can an AI chatbot check WooCommerce order status?
- Yes. As of October 2026, PepoChat, Crisp, tawk.to and the AI Engine and WoowBot plugins offer ready-made WooCommerce order lookups, while Tidio and Chatbase need an API action you build yourself. The chatbot calls the WooCommerce REST API with a read-only key and reports one order's status. Gorgias shows WooCommerce orders to agents only, because its AI Agent requires a Shopify store.
- Is there a free AI chatbot for WooCommerce?
- Yes, with limits. As of October 2026, PepoChat's free plan includes 200 AI replies a month, 5 knowledge sources and the WooCommerce order actions. Tidio Free gives 50 Lyro AI conversations once, Crisp Free has no AI credits, and tawk.to's WooCommerce AI tool needs a paid AI Assist plan from $29 a month. AI Engine's plugin is free, but you pay your AI provider.
- How does a chatbot verify who is asking about an order?
- Verification depends on the tool. Crisp can make Hugo verify a customer's identity before it uses a tool. PepoChat offers a six-digit email code that expires after 10 minutes, but it does not gate the order lookups, which run on whatever number or email the shopper types. WooCommerce numbers are sequential and easy to guess, so keep only the email lookup if that matters.
- Can a chatbot process refunds in WooCommerce?
- Refunds should stay with people. Gorgias cannot create, edit, cancel or refund WooCommerce orders, and PepoChat connects with a read-only key and never wires refunds or payments as actions, because actions run at least once and a rare retry could repeat a write. Crisp's refund feature is for human agents in its inbox. A person should check the order and the payment before any money moves.
- Does a chatbot plugin slow down a WordPress site?
- A widget that loads asynchronously adds little. PepoChat's loader is 7,911 bytes, or 3,248 bytes gzipped (measured 19 October 2026). After the page has finished loading, it fetches the chat frame in browser idle time so the first click opens instantly, and a visitor session is created only when the window opens. Turn off Preload the chat in the background to load it on the first click instead.
- What should a WooCommerce chatbot know before launch?
- Your shipping zones and times, returns window and refund policy, order processing times, payment methods, sizing and care guides, and how to reach a person. Crawl or upload those pages, add Q&A pairs for questions they answer badly, connect the order lookup and test with real order numbers. PepoChat crawls up to 200 pages, 3 levels deep, as one knowledge source.
