Best AI Chatbot With Live Chat in 2026: 9 Tools With a Team Inbox
LiveChat, PepoChat, Tidio, Intercom, Zoho SalesIQ, Crisp, tawk.to, Smartsupp and Chatwoot compared on AI pricing, seats, phone apps and the cost of 3 seats.

Short answer
As of November 2026, the best AI chatbot with live chat depends on who answers most chats. LiveChat, now sold as Text, is the most complete live chat console, with phone apps and an AI agent on every plan from $19 a user a month. PepoChat is the AI-first pick: its AI support agent and team inbox come on every plan, with three teammates for $39 a month. Tidio suits small stores, with 10 free seats.
You want one tool where an AI answers the first message on your website and a person from your team can step into the same conversation, in the same inbox, when it matters. That is sold in two shapes: live chat products that added an AI agent, and AI support agents that ship with a team inbox. The shape decides your bill, your seats and whether your team can reply from a phone.
This comparison is for a small business or a support team of one to five people. "Best" means the AI can answer first, the inbox has the basics a person needs, and the price for three seats with AI is clear upfront.
PepoChat is our product; we include it where it fits and say where other tools are the better choice. Facts below were checked on vendor pages on 4 November 2026. Still deciding whether you need people on chat? Start with live chat vs chatbot.
Quick comparison: AI chatbots with live chat in November 2026

How we compared these tools
We compared the nine tools on five criteria that decide whether AI and live chat work as one product.
- AI included or add-on. Resolution-based pricing is a bill that counts each conversation the AI closes without a person, so it grows as the AI gets better. We note the unit each vendor bills.
- Seats and the price for three. A seat is one teammate's login.
- Inbox basics. Assignment, internal notes, tags and canned responses, which are saved replies an agent inserts in a click (also called macros or shortcuts).
- Phone apps and alerts. A push notification, or only an email.
- Channels and visitor information. Website chat, email and messaging apps, and what the agent sees about the visitor.
We read each vendor's pricing page, help center and integration docs on 4 November 2026 and compared them on the criteria above.
AI-first live chat is a setup where an AI support agent answers every new conversation and a person joins the same thread when the AI cannot help or the visitor asks for one. That moment is the human handoff.
1. LiveChat (Text): best for a staffed chat team that wants phone apps
LiveChat, now sold under the Text name, is a mature per-user live chat console with an AI agent on every plan, and it is the best fit for a team that staffs chat most of the day and wants native phone apps.
Pricing: New customers buy Text plans on the LiveChat pricing page: Essential at $19 per user a month on annual billing or $25 monthly, and Growth at $79 or $99. The AI Agent is included: 10 AI resolutions a month for the workspace on Essential, 200 on Growth, and packages of 50 more at $49.50. A resolution is counted when the AI "directly solves at least one customer question", once per conversation.
Strengths: One inbox for chats, email and tickets, with website, WhatsApp, Messenger and SMS. AI Copilot drafts replies and summarizes long chats for agents. Essential shows 50 live visitors, Growth 400. iPhone and Android apps push new conversations to your team.
Limits: Ten resolutions is a sample: 250 AI-solved chats a month means five packages, $247.50 on top of seats. Essential keeps 60 days of history and has private canned responses only; shared ones, chat supervision and working hours start on Growth. Its pages disagree on whether the AI stops or refills at the limit, so ask.
Verdict: Choose LiveChat when people answer most chats and the AI covers the overflow.
2. PepoChat: best for AI-first live chat on a small budget
PepoChat is an AI support agent for websites with a team inbox built in, and it is the best fit for a small team that wants the AI to answer every chat first, with people stepping in from the same inbox.
Pricing: Free is $0 for 200 AI replies a month and one member. Starter is $39 a month or $390 a year for 2,000 replies and 3 members; Growth is $149 or $1,490 for 10,000 replies and 10 members. Extra seats cost $15 a month and extra replies $10 per 1,000; replies your team types are not counted. Every feature except new-lead emails is on the free plan.
Strengths: The agent answers from your knowledge base and hands off when it cannot answer or the visitor asks for a person. The team inbox has assignment, tags, priority, saved views, macros, internal notes with @mentions and an Enhance button that rewrites drafts. Team availability has three modes (answer live, answer during business hours, follow up by email), and the AI keeps answering in all three.
Limits: No mobile app: the web dashboard works in a phone browser, and handoff alerts arrive by email, a Slack action or a webhook. Inbox replies are not emailed to the visitor; you use Send Email. The chat runs in the website widget, with WhatsApp and Messenger in limited rollout, and there is no live visitor list. It is a young product with few public reviews and no compliance certifications.
Verdict: Choose PepoChat when the AI should carry most chats and two or three people cover the rest.
3. Tidio: best for small online stores that want 10 seats free
Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk suite for small online stores, and it is the best fit for a Shopify-first team that wants many people on live chat and Lyro, its AI agent, as an add-on.
Pricing: The Tidio pricing page lists Free with 50 billable conversations a month and 10 seats, Starter at $29 a month ($24.17 on annual billing) for 100, and Growth from $59 ($49.17) for 250. A billable conversation is one "that includes a message from a human agent". Lyro is a second meter: 50 conversations once per account, then $39 a month for 50 ($32.50 yearly) up to $700 for 1,000. A Lyro conversation is any chat with at least one AI reply.
Strengths: Live chat, tickets, email, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp in one inbox on every plan, with mobile apps and automatic chat assignment throughout. Starter adds the live visitors list. Tidio's FAQ cites a SOC 2 Type II examination.
Limits: On Free your team cannot reply to new messages once the 50 conversations are used, until the month resets. Macros, visitor notes and advanced analytics start on Growth, and self-serve plans stop at 10 agents.
Verdict: Choose Tidio when people answer most chats and Lyro takes a predictable slice. Our tawk.to vs Tidio comparison prices the two AI add-ons side by side.
4. Intercom: best for growing software teams that want the deepest AI agent
Intercom is a customer service platform built around its Messenger and the Fin AI agent, and it is the best fit for a software company whose team lives in chat and in-app messages and will pay per AI outcome for Fin's depth.
Pricing: Essential is $29 per seat a month on annual billing, shown at $19 for new customers, or $39 monthly; Advanced is $85 ($99 monthly) and Expert $132 ($139). Fin costs $0.99 per outcome on every plan, once per conversation, with no included allowance. An outcome is counted when the customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin's answer, or Fin completes a Procedure.
Strengths: Every plan includes unlimited live chat, support email and in-app chats in a shared inbox. Fin also answers on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, SMS, Slack and Discord. Advanced adds round-robin assignment and workflows.
Limits: Intercom's help article says its iOS and Android app is in maintenance mode; you can reply, note, tag and send macros, but not create tickets. An outcome is billed when a customer simply stops replying for 24 hours, so the bill follows your traffic.
Verdict: Choose Intercom when the AI must do multi-step work and the budget allows seats plus outcomes.
5. Zoho SalesIQ: best for visitor tracking and Zoho CRM users
Zoho SalesIQ is Zoho's live chat and visitor tracking product, and it is the best fit for a sales-minded team that wants to see who is on the site, chat from a phone app and keep the record in Zoho CRM.
Pricing: The Zoho SalesIQ pricing page prices paid plans per operator: Basic at $7 a month on annual billing or $10 monthly, Professional at $12.75 or $17, and Enterprise at $20 or $25. Free gives 3 operator licences and 100 operator chat sessions a month, with no bot. Basic adds one chatbot, one Zia Agent and 25,000 bot sessions.
Strengths: Canned replies and a real-time visitor list on every plan, Android and iOS apps, and WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, LINE and WeChat on paid plans. Answer Bot, which Zoho calls "a Gen AI-driven chatbot" that answers from your articles, FAQs and webpages, comes with Enterprise and 200,000 bot sessions.
Limits: Answer Bot is Enterprise only, so three operators with it cost $60 a month on annual billing. Zia Agents come on every paid plan, but Zoho does not publish their usage cost beyond the plan, and their handoff to a person must be written into the agent's instructions.
Verdict: Choose Zoho SalesIQ when visitor tracking and the Zoho ecosystem matter as much as the AI.

6. Crisp: best for a flat price across many channels
Crisp is a shared-inbox messaging platform priced per workspace rather than per seat, and it is the best fit for a small team that wants several agents on chat, email and social apps for one flat price, with its Hugo AI agent from the Mini plan.
Pricing: The Crisp pricing page lists Free with 2 seats and no AI; Mini at $45 a month per workspace with 4 seats and $5 of Hugo credits, "Around 90 automated conversations"; Essentials at $95 with 10 seats and $25 of credits; and Plus at $295 with 20 or more seats and $75.
Strengths: Mobile apps on every plan, including Free. Mini adds shortcuts, private notes, an email inbox, Messenger, Telegram and X; Essentials adds WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, routing and assignment, and the knowledge base.
Limits: Free is the chat widget and a contact form only. By default Hugo stops answering when the credits run out and hands new chats to people, unless you turn on Pay-As-You-Go. On Mini, Hugo trains on one domain and one file, refreshed by hand.
Verdict: Choose Crisp for four to ten seats on many channels without a per-seat bill. Our Tidio vs Crisp vs PepoChat comparison goes deeper.
7. tawk.to: best free live chat for a human team
tawk.to is a free live chat platform that earns its money from optional add-ons, and it is the best fit for a team where people answer most chats and want unlimited agents at no cost, with AI bought as credits.
Pricing: The tawk.to FAQ says answering chats yourself is free, "with no limits at all on the number of Agents, chat volumes or sites". AI Assist is priced in message credits, per the tawk.to AI Assist billing article: Hobby free with 100 credits a month, Growth $29 a month for 1,000, Business $99 for 5,000 and Enterprise $399 for 20,000, with extra credits at $30 per 1,000. The default Auto model uses 3 credits per reply, so Hobby covers about 33 replies and Growth about 333. Removing the badge costs $29 a month on annual billing.
Strengths: Unlimited agents and concurrent chats, ticketing, a knowledge base, iOS and Android apps, and an inbox for Messenger, WhatsApp, SMS through Twilio, Telegram and email.
Limits: The AI is billed per reply, not per conversation, so a long chat costs credits on every turn. AI integrations and the AI schedule need a paid AI Assist plan.
Verdict: Choose tawk.to when people carry the chat and the AI answers a few hundred questions a month at most.
8. Smartsupp: best for small European online stores
Smartsupp is a live chat and AI shopping assistant platform for online stores, priced per operator, and it is the best fit for a small European shop that wants chat, social messages and an AI that recommends products.
Pricing: The Smartsupp pricing page lists Free with 1 operator and 25 conversations a month; Solo at $17 a month on annual billing ($24 monthly) for 1 operator; Plus at $25 ($35) for 3; and Expert at $83 ($117) for 5. Paid plans have unlimited conversations and AI reply drafts for agents. Mira, the customer-facing AI agent, is an add-on at $16 per 100 conversations a month on annual billing ($20 monthly).
Strengths: WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram on every plan, with email from Solo. iPhone, Android and Windows apps on every plan. Assignment, tags, office hours and detailed visitor info from Solo. Mira recommends products from a feed of up to 30,000 items and hands over to a person.
Limits: Mira runs only in the website widget and reads at most 20 pages and 30 Q&A pairs. Shared team shortcuts start on Expert, and the "Powered by Smartsupp" badge cannot be removed on any plan.
Verdict: Choose Smartsupp when product recommendations matter more than deep support answers.
9. Chatwoot: best open-source option you can host yourself
Chatwoot is an open-source customer support platform with a shared inbox and an AI agent called Captain, and it is the best fit for a technical team that wants to self-host its live chat or pay per agent on Chatwoot Cloud.
Pricing: The Chatwoot pricing page lists Cloud plans per agent a month: Hacker free for up to 2 agents and 500 conversations, live chat only and no Captain; Startups at $19 with all channels and 300 Captain credits; Business at $39 with 500 credits; Enterprise at $99 with 800. Extra credits cost $20 per 1,000. Self-hosted, the Community Edition is free without Captain, and Premium Support at $19 per agent adds it.
Strengths: Website chat, email, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and SMS in one inbox. iOS and Android apps with push notifications, canned responses, assignment, private notes and @mentions. Captain answers first from your website pages, PDFs and help center, and hands off to a person.
Limits: Captain uses one credit per reply, so Startups' 300 credits cover about 300 AI replies a month for the whole account, and unused credits do not roll over. The free Hacker plan has no AI, and self-hosting means you run the servers and updates.
Verdict: Choose Chatwoot when owning the code and the data matters more than setup time.
Can you answer live chats from your phone?
Yes with eight of the nine tools: LiveChat, Tidio, Intercom, Zoho SalesIQ, Crisp, tawk.to, Smartsupp and Chatwoot offer iOS and Android apps for agents, and PepoChat does not.
LiveChat's Customer Service Report, whose data was last updated in 2024 and comes from its own platform, puts the average first response at 35 seconds, and 31 seconds for businesses of one to nine people. Our first response time benchmarks explain how to measure yours.
An AI that answers first changes the math: the visitor gets an answer in seconds, and the alert only matters for handoffs. In PepoChat that alert is an email to every member with the last messages and a link; you reply from the dashboard in a phone browser, as the human handoff docs show. If you want push notifications in a native app, pick one of the other eight.
How much does AI plus live chat cost for a team of three?
At 500 conversations a month the eight tools we could price range from $39 to about $409; at 2,000 the two that bill per AI resolution pass $1,000.
Assumptions: three seats, monthly list prices (Intercom at its annual seat price), two AI replies per conversation (tawk.to on its default Auto model at 3 credits a reply), and the AI resolving half while the rest go to a person. These are estimates, not quotes.
| Tool | About 500 conversations a month | About 2,000 conversations a month | What drives the bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| PepoChat | $39: Starter covers 1,000 replies | $59: Starter plus 2,000 extra replies at $10 per 1,000 | AI replies |
| LiveChat (Text) | About $323: 3 Essential seats $75 plus 5 packages of 50 resolutions | About $1,065: $75 plus 20 packages | Seats and AI resolutions |
| Tidio | About $409: Growth $59 for 250 human chats plus Lyro $350 for 500 | Custom: Lyro's self-serve tiers stop at 1,000 | Human chats and Lyro conversations |
| Intercom | About $335: 3 Essential seats $87 plus 250 Fin outcomes | About $1,077: $87 plus 1,000 outcomes | Seats and Fin outcomes |
| tawk.to | $89: Growth $29 plus 2,000 extra credits at $30 per 1,000 | About $309: Business plus 7,000 extra credits at $30 per 1,000 | AI credits per reply |
| Smartsupp | $135: Plus $35 plus Mira $100 for 500 conversations | $435: Plus $35 plus Mira $400 | Mira conversations |
| Zoho SalesIQ | $75: 3 Enterprise operators | $75: bot sessions are included up to 200,000 | Operators |
| Chatwoot | $77: 3 Startups agents $57 plus 1,000 extra credits for $20 | $137: $57 plus 4,000 extra credits | Agents and Captain credits |
Prices from each vendor's own pages, checked 4 November 2026. Zoho's figure assumes the in-built Answer Bot. Crisp is left out because its Pay-As-You-Go rate is not published; at its own estimate of $0.05 to $0.10 per Hugo conversation, 500 AI conversations is $25 to $50 of credits.
Per-resolution and per-conversation meters grow with every chat the AI handles, while flat allowances barely move. Free seats are not a free stack: tawk.to reaches $309 at 2,000 conversations because credits are spent per reply.

Which AI chatbot with live chat should you choose?
Pick by who answers most of your chats today and who should answer them in six months.
Do you still need live agents if the AI answers first? Usually yes, but fewer: the AI takes repeated questions, and people take refunds, complaints and sales. Our guide to 24/7 customer support for a small business shows how to split the hours.
Questions to ask any vendor before you commit:
- When the AI allowance runs out, does the AI stop, refill automatically or hand everything to people?
- Is the AI billed per reply, per conversation or per resolution, and what counts as one?
- Do inbox replies reach a visitor who has left the page?
Moving from another tool? The switching checklist lists what each vendor lets you export.

- Compare related roundups: AI chatbots with human handoff and the best Tidio alternatives.
- Count last month's chats and the share a person had to answer; that decides whether you need more seats or more AI replies.
- Price your own volume with the table above, then compare PepoChat's allowances on the pricing page.
- Create a free PepoChat workspace, import your site as one knowledge source and test the AI and the inbox together.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best live chat software with an AI chatbot?
- It depends on who answers most chats. As of November 2026, LiveChat, now sold as Text, is the most complete console for staffed teams, with phone apps and an AI agent from $19 a user a month. PepoChat suits AI-first teams, with the AI and team inbox on every plan and three seats for $39. Tidio suits small stores, with 10 free seats and a Lyro add-on.
- Is there free live chat software with AI?
- Yes, with limits. PepoChat's free plan includes 200 AI replies a month, the team inbox and one member. tawk.to is free for unlimited agents, and its AI Assist Hobby tier gives 100 credits, about 33 replies. Tidio's free plan has 10 seats and 50 one-off Lyro conversations. Zoho SalesIQ's free plan has 3 operators but no chatbot.
- Do I need live agents if I have an AI chatbot?
- Usually yes, but fewer. An AI support agent handles the repeated questions about prices, hours, shipping and setup from your own content. People still take refunds, complaints, unusual cases and sales conversations. Start with one or two people covering handoffs, measure how many chats the AI cannot close in the first two weeks, and add seats only when that number needs them.
- How many agents do I need for live chat?
- Count the chats a person must answer, not all chats. LiveChat's Customer Service Report, with data last updated in 2024, puts the average chat at about eight and a half minutes, so 300 handoffs a month is roughly 42 hours of chat time. Spread that over the hours you staff chat, then add cover for peaks, breaks and days off.
- What is a good live chat response time?
- LiveChat's Customer Service Report, with data last updated in 2024, gives a 35-second average first response across its platform and 31 seconds for businesses of one to nine employees. An AI support agent that answers first replies within seconds at any hour, so the number to watch becomes the time from handoff to a person's first reply.
- Can I answer live chats from my phone?
- With most tools, yes. LiveChat, Tidio, Intercom, Zoho SalesIQ, Crisp, tawk.to, Smartsupp and Chatwoot offer iOS and Android apps for agents, though Intercom says its app is in maintenance mode. PepoChat has no native app: handoff alerts arrive by email, and you reply from the web dashboard, which works in a phone browser.
