Help Scout vs Zendesk in 2026: Pricing, AI Agents and Which to Pick
Help Scout vs Zendesk on October 2026 prices: annual and monthly seats, Scout at $0.75 per resolution vs Zendesk's $1.50 to $2.00, and a worked bill for four.

Short answer
Help Scout suits email-first teams that want a shared inbox; Zendesk suits larger teams routing chat, phone and social channels through one ticket queue. As of October 2026, Help Scout costs $25 to $75 per user a month on annual billing, or $30 to $90 monthly, plus $0.75 per resolution by its Scout AI agent. Zendesk costs $19 to $115 per agent annually, or $25 to $149 monthly, plus $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution past an allowance.
Help Scout and Zendesk are both helpdesks, but Help Scout grew out of the shared email inbox while Zendesk grew out of the ticket, routing every channel into one queue with rules, SLAs and reports. In 2026 both charge per seat and meter the AI separately, in units that do not mean the same thing.
This comparison is for the founder or support lead choosing between them. It covers both price lists, Help Scout's two pricing-model changes since 2024, the two AI agents and what each bills, a worked bill for four people, and where a standalone AI agent fits in front of either.

What is the difference between Help Scout and Zendesk?
The difference between Help Scout and Zendesk is the unit each product is built around: Help Scout treats support as conversations in a shared email inbox, while Zendesk treats every request as a ticket to route, prioritise and track.
A shared inbox is an email inbox that a whole team works from, with assignments, notes and saved replies, while customers see an ordinary email thread. A ticketing-first helpdesk gives each request a number, a status, an owner and rules that move it between queues, whatever channel it came from. Help Scout's tiers add depth to the same inbox, while Zendesk's add whole channels, such as chat from Suite Team.
If your shortlist is a different pair, Freshdesk vs Zendesk sets Zendesk against a cheaper ticketing helpdesk and Intercom vs Zendesk against a messenger-first one.
How much does Help Scout cost compared with Zendesk?
Help Scout charges $25, $45 or $75 per user a month on annual billing and $30, $54 or $90 month to month; Zendesk charges $19, $55 or $115 per agent a month on annual billing and $25, $69 or $149 month to month. Both bill the AI on top.
| Plan | Annual billing, per seat a month | Monthly billing, per seat a month | AI resolutions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Help Scout Free | $0, up to 5 users | $0 | Scout on a 3-month trial, then a paid plan |
| Help Scout Standard | $25 | $30 | $0.75 each, none included |
| Help Scout Plus | $45 | $54 | $0.75 each, none included |
| Help Scout Pro | $75, 10-user minimum | $90 | $0.75 each, none included |
| Zendesk Support Team | $19 | $25 | 5 per agent a month included, then $1.50 or $2.00 |
| Zendesk Suite Team | $55 | $69 | 5 per agent a month included, then $1.50 or $2.00 |
| Zendesk Suite Professional | $115 | $149 | 10 per agent a month included, then $1.50 or $2.00 |
| Zendesk Suite Enterprise | From sales | From sales | Not listed on the pricing page |

Help Scout: $25 is the annual price
The $25, $45 and $75 on Help Scout's pricing page are annual-billing prices. The page opens with its Annual toggle selected and a "-16%" badge beside it, and the price data the page loads lists $30, $54 and $90 for monthly billing; Help Scout's article on annual payments confirms the 16% discount.
The Free plan covers 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts a month. A contact is anyone who received a reply from your team or had a question resolved by Scout, counted once however many conversations they have. Once the 100 are used, Help Scout's free-plan article says you cannot reply by email, chat or Scout until the next monthly cycle, so Free suits a trickle of email rather than a busy store.
Zendesk: seats plus automated resolutions
Zendesk advertises 20% off for annual billing and prices Suite Enterprise through sales. Support Team has no messaging of its own, so an AI agent on a website chat needs Suite Team or higher. Copilot, the AI assistant for human agents, is a $50 per agent add-on on yearly billing from Suite Professional up.

How has Help Scout's pricing changed since 2024?
Help Scout has changed its pricing model twice since 2024: from per-user plans to plans priced by contacts helped in November 2024, then back to per-user plans in November 2025, with the AI moved onto a separate $0.75 per-resolution meter.
| Period | Pricing model | Entry paid plan | How the AI was billed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024, until mid-November | Per user | Standard $25 a user monthly, $20 to $22 on annual billing; Pro $65, annual only, 10 or more users | AI drafts sold as an add-on |
| Late November 2024 to early November 2025 | Per contact helped, unlimited users | Standard from $50 a month and Plus from $75 for 100 contacts, on annual billing; Pro from 1,000 contacts | Inside the contact count, with "no per-seat or AI usage fees" |
| Mid-November 2025 to today | Per user again | Standard $25 annual or $30 monthly; Plus $45 or $54; Pro $75 or $90 | AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution, renamed Envoy and Scout in October 2026 |
Prices from archived copies of helpscout.com/pricing/ in the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine and from the live page, checked 22 October 2026.
The archived copies pin the dates. Help Scout's pricing page showed per-user plans on 29 February, 22 August and 12 November 2024. By 26 November 2024 it read "Delight more customers with unlimited users" and "Help Scout has no per-seat or AI usage fees. We earn revenue when you help customers." The Free plan allowed 50 contacts a month then and 100 by October 2025. The copy from 6 November 2025 still shows contact pricing; the copy from 13 November 2025 shows per-user plans again, with AI Answers as a $0.75 add-on.
That history matters in three ways.
- Older quotes are stale. A figure such as "$50 a month for 100 contacts" describes a model new customers cannot buy.
- The AI moved on top of the bill. A resolution used to use up a contact; now it is a separate $0.75 line, taken from prepaid credit on annual plans.
- Some accounts are still on old models. Help Scout keeps a billing guide for contact-based accounts, so check Your Plan before comparing an invoice with these prices.
Help Scout's Scout vs Zendesk AI agents: how do they compare?
Help Scout's Scout and Zendesk's AI agents both answer customers from your help content and hand the conversation to a person when they cannot, but they differ in reach and above all in what each bills.
What are Help Scout Envoy and Scout?
Envoy is Help Scout's suite of tools for resolving customer requests automatically, and Scout is the AI agent built into it; the Envoy product page says you can also connect your own agent. Help Scout's article Introducing Scout, updated on 15 October 2026, describes Scout as "evolving from AI Answers", the name the pricing page still used on 9 October. The price is unchanged at $0.75 per resolution on Standard, Plus and Pro.
Scout answers from public and private help centers, chosen websites and Google Docs; learning from past conversations and connecting to apps are marked as coming soon. The product page lists website and in-app chat as live and email as coming soon, while the help article describes Scout in Beacon and email, so check your account. Scout handles more than 50 languages.
How Help Scout bills a Scout resolution
Help Scout's AI Resolutions Pricing article, updated on 18 October 2026, defines a resolution as "a single AI chat session that is resolved without help from a human." You are charged when Scout responds to the customer's question and the customer does not ask for more help after the last AI response, once per session however many questions Scout answers. You are not charged when Scout only greets the customer or asks a follow-up question without a full answer, or when the customer asks for more help.
Charges are billed monthly in arrears, and a monthly spending limit counted in resolutions switches Scout off in Beacon until the next cycle. New Help Scout customers get a free 3-month trial; existing customers who switch Scout on get none.
How Zendesk AI agents work and bill
Zendesk AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan, and a rollout between May and June 2026 gave every plan agentic reasoning, multi-step procedures and external API integrations. Zendesk says the agents work across social, web, mobile, voice and email in 80 languages, drawing on your help center and sources such as Google Drive and PDFs.
Billing runs on automated resolutions, the unit Zendesk uses to measure and bill AI agent usage. Since 18 May 2026 every AI conversation falls into one of three resolution tiers. An assisted escalation, where a person finished the job, and a contained resolution, where the customer stopped asking but a language-model check could not confirm the request was resolved, are free. Only a verified resolution, one that passes the check, counts. The check runs when the conversation ends: 72 hours after the first email, 2 hours after the first message on messaging by default, and at hang-up on voice.
The pricing page includes 5 automated resolutions per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional, up to 10,000 a year, then $1.50 each committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Zendesk's allowance article instead states a dollar allowance for accounts on its resolution allowance pricing model, $2 per agent seat a month on Suite Team and $5 on Suite Professional, so ask which model your contract uses. Past the allowance the AI keeps answering at pay-as-you-go rates unless you pause it; the Zendesk AI agent decision guide covers both settings.
Which AI agent is better?
Zendesk's agents reach further today, acting in other systems and on voice and social channels, while Scout's app connections are still coming soon. Billing differs more: Scout bills a chat in which the customer simply did not ask for more help, so a wrong answer followed by silence can cost $0.75, while Zendesk bills only what its verification confirms, fairer per unit but harder to forecast. Neither page explains how its headline rate is measured, 73% for Scout and "up to 80%" for Zendesk, so run a pilot.
Worked example: what a four-person team pays on each
At list prices on annual billing, a four-person team whose AI resolves half of 1,500 conversations a month pays about $660 on Help Scout Standard and $1,315 to $1,680 on Zendesk Suite Team, once Help Scout's free resolution trial has ended.
The assumptions, to swap for your own:
- Four people reply to customers, so four seats on both products, billed annually.
- 1,500 conversations a month reach the AI agent first on a website chat, so Zendesk needs Suite Team or higher and Help Scout a paid plan.
- 50% end in a billable resolution, 750 a month; Zendesk's allowance takes 20 off that on Suite Team and 40 on Suite Professional.
| Plan | 4 seats | AI line | Monthly total | Per conversation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Help Scout Standard | $100 | 750 × $0.75 = $562.50 | $662.50 | $0.44 |
| Help Scout Plus | $180 | 750 × $0.75 = $562.50 | $742.50 | $0.50 |
| Help Scout Pro, 10-user minimum | $750 | 750 × $0.75 = $562.50 | $1,312.50 | $0.88 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, committed | $220 | 730 × $1.50 = $1,095 | $1,315 | $0.88 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, pay-as-you-go | $220 | 730 × $2.00 = $1,460 | $1,680 | $1.12 |
| Zendesk Suite Professional, committed | $460 | 710 × $1.50 = $1,065 | $1,525 | $1.02 |
Seat and AI prices from each vendor's pricing page, checked 22 October 2026; the 50% resolution share is an assumption.
Help Scout is cheaper on both lines at the same count. A Standard seat costs $25 against $55 for Suite Team, Zendesk's first plan with chat, and a resolution $0.75 against $1.50 or $2.00. Monthly billing raises the seat lines to $120 and $276 without changing the order.
The AI line is most of the bill on both. On Help Scout Standard it is more than five times the seats, and on Zendesk Suite Team five to nearly seven times, so comparing seat prices compares the small number.
The billable counts will not match. Zendesk bills only what its language model verifies, so the same 1,500 chats are likely to produce fewer billable Zendesk resolutions. On the arithmetic, Suite Team would have to bill fewer than about 315 resolutions (21%) on a commitment, or about 240 (16%) pay-as-you-go, to cost less than Help Scout Standard at 750. A new Help Scout account pays no AI line for three months, so Standard costs $100 a month until the trial ends.
Help Scout vs Zendesk features by team size
Help Scout caps users at 5 on Free, 25 on Standard and 50 on Plus, with Pro unlimited from a 10-user minimum; Zendesk states no seat cap but keeps skills-based routing, SLAs and multiple help centers for Suite Professional at $115 an agent.
| Team | Help Scout plan that fits | Zendesk plan that fits | What usually decides it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 people, mostly email | Free (100 contacts a month) or Standard | Support Team, email only | Whether you also want chat and an AI agent on the website |
| 5 to 25 people, email plus chat | Standard: live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, 1 basic SLA policy | Suite Team: messaging, voice, social channels, 1 help center | Phone: native on Zendesk, through an integration such as Aircall on Help Scout |
| 25 to 50 people, several teams | Plus: up to 50 users, round robin, Salesforce, Jira and HubSpot apps | Suite Professional: skills-based routing, SLAs, IVR, up to 100 light agents | Routing depth and how fresh the reports must be |
| 50+ people or regulated data | Pro: unlimited users, HIPAA, SSO, unlimited workflows and SLA policies | Suite Professional or Enterprise: HIPAA, choice of data center | Compliance paperwork and data location |
Plan details from each vendor's pricing page, checked 22 October 2026.
Below 25 people the two are closer than their prices suggest: Help Scout Standard already carries live chat, the social channels, 2 inboxes and 150 basic workflows, while Zendesk's cheapest chat-capable seat costs $55.
Past 25 people Zendesk pulls ahead: Suite Professional routes by skill and ticket priority and adds five help centers in more than 40 languages, hourly dashboards and a choice of data center in the US, EEA, UK or Asia Pacific. Help Scout Pro answers with unlimited users, workflows and SLA policies, SSO and HIPAA, but less routing depth, and Zendesk's depth comes with rules that someone has to maintain.
Where each one clearly wins
In these situations the choice is not close.
Choose Help Scout when
- Most support arrives by email and customers should see ordinary email threads, not ticket numbers.
- You want cheap seats with chat included: $25 a user on annual billing covers live chat and the social channels.
- You want one AI price with no allowance math and a monthly cap counted in resolutions.
- Your team is under 50 people and nobody wants to administer routing rules.
Choose Zendesk when
- Phone, social and messaging make up much of your volume and need one queue with routing, IVR and SLAs.
- You run many agents and need light agents, several help centers or a choice of data center.
- You want the AI agent to act in other systems today, or to pay only for verified resolutions.
- Support is pure email on a tight budget: Support Team's $19 seat is the cheapest paid seat here.
Where does a standalone AI agent fit in front of Help Scout or Zendesk?
A standalone AI support agent fits in front of either helpdesk when most questions start on your website: it answers from your knowledge base and only real escalations reach the helpdesk, but the hand-over works differently for Zendesk and for Help Scout.
PepoChat, our product, is one such agent. It answers only from your own knowledge base, built from your website, documents and help articles, and hands the conversation to a built-in team inbox when it cannot answer or the visitor asks for a person. The free plan has every feature except new-lead emails, with 200 AI replies a month and 5 knowledge sources; Starter is $49 a month for 2,000 replies and 3 members, Growth $149 for 10,000 replies and 10 members, with extra replies at $10 per 1,000 and extra seats at $15 a month. At two AI replies per conversation, the worked example's 1,500 conversations cost $74 a month on Starter, overage and one extra seat included.
In front of Zendesk
PepoChat's Zendesk integration connects through OAuth, since Zendesk stops issuing new API tokens on 27 October 2026. The agent can create a ticket with a subject, the details and the visitor as requester, report the ticket number back, and check an existing ticket's status by number. A website conversation the agent resolves never reaches Zendesk, so it cannot become a billed automated resolution.
In front of Help Scout
PepoChat has no Help Scout integration, and no prebuilt action creates a Help Scout conversation. Two routes work today.
- Email-first handoff. Set Team availability to "No one answers live chat, we follow up by email". When the agent cannot help, or a visitor asks for a person, it asks once for an email address and escalates. Every workspace member gets an email with the visitor's address, the reason and the last three messages, and a teammate starts a New Conversation to that address in Help Scout. The human handoff docs describe each message.
- A custom action through a relay. Help Scout's API creates a conversation with one POST request, but its developer documentation says its OAuth tokens last two days, and a PepoChat custom action sends fixed headers. Point the action at a small endpoint you host that refreshes the token and makes the call, or send PepoChat's Zapier action to a Zap that runs Help Scout's Create Conversation. Help Scout's API is not on its Free plan, and Webhooks by Zapier is a paid Zapier feature.
Replies typed in PepoChat's team inbox are not emailed to the visitor, so the follow-up should go out from Help Scout. Run one AI agent per page, too: if PepoChat answers on the website, switch Scout off in Beacon there, or you can pay twice for one visitor.

The limits are real: PepoChat is not a helpdesk. There is no email ticketing, phone queue, WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram or Messenger channel, no SLA policies or workflows, and no published SOC 2, ISO or HIPAA certification. If those matter, keep Help Scout or Zendesk and let the agent take the website's first line.
What to do next
- Write down the people who reply to customers, monthly conversations by channel and the share you expect the AI to resolve, then work your own row of the table above at 30% and at 70%.
- Compare more vendors on the same units in the AI customer support pricing index.
- If a website agent in front of your helpdesk fits, start a free PepoChat workspace without a card and run it beside Help Scout or Zendesk for a month.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Help Scout or Zendesk better for a small business?
- For a small team whose support is mostly email, Help Scout is usually the better fit: as of October 2026 its Standard plan costs $25 a user a month on annual billing and already includes live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Zendesk's first plan with chat, Suite Team, costs $55 an agent on the same terms. A web-first team under five people may not need a full helpdesk at all.
- Is Help Scout's $25 per user price monthly or annual?
- Annual. The $25, $45 and $75 per user a month that Help Scout's pricing page shows for Standard, Plus and Pro are annual-billing prices; the page opens with its Annual toggle selected, and its own price data lists $30, $54 and $90 for monthly billing. Help Scout's help center puts the annual discount at 16%. Pro also has a 10-user minimum.
- What happened to Help Scout AI Answers?
- Help Scout renamed it in October 2026. Its AI product is now Envoy, a suite whose built-in agent, Scout, Help Scout's help center describes as evolving from AI Answers. The price did not change: $0.75 per resolution on Standard, Plus and Pro, billed monthly in arrears, with three free months for new accounts and an optional monthly cap counted in resolutions.
- Does Help Scout still charge per contact?
- Not for new customers. Archived copies of Help Scout's pricing page show plans priced by contacts helped, with unlimited users, from November 2024, and per-user plans again from November 2025. Accounts still on contact-based plans have their own billing guide. The Free plan still counts contacts: 100 a month, after which you cannot reply until the next cycle.
- What counts as a Zendesk automated resolution?
- Only a verified resolution draws on the allowance: the AI agent answered, the customer did not ask for more help, and a language-model check of the conversation confirmed the request was resolved. Assisted escalations and contained resolutions are free. As of October 2026 plans include 5 or 10 per agent a month, then $1.50 each committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.
- Does PepoChat integrate with Help Scout or Zendesk?
- PepoChat creates Zendesk tickets and checks their status through an OAuth connection. It has no Help Scout integration: the honest routes are the email-first handoff, where the agent collects the visitor's email and your team follows up from Help Scout, or a custom action calling a small relay that creates Help Scout conversations. The free plan includes 200 AI replies a month.
