Intercom vs Zendesk in 2026: AI Agents, Pricing and Which to Pick
Intercom vs Zendesk on October 2026 prices: seats, Fin outcomes vs automated resolutions, channels, help center and a worked bill for a four-person team.

Short answer
Intercom suits chat-first teams, especially product-led SaaS, that want the Fin AI agent and their people in one inbox. Zendesk suits larger teams running email, phone and social channels through one ticketing system. As of October 2026, on annual billing, Intercom costs $29 to $132 per seat a month plus $0.99 per Fin outcome; Zendesk costs $19 to $115 per seat plus $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution past a small allowance.
Intercom and Zendesk are often compared head to head, and in 2026 both sell themselves on their AI agents as much as on their inboxes. Intercom's agent is called Fin; Zendesk's are simply called AI agents. Both bill the AI per resolved conversation on top of per-seat plans, which makes the sticker price a poor guide to the invoice.
This comparison is for whoever has to choose: a head of support, an operations lead or a founder at a small or mid-sized team. It compares seats, AI pricing, channels, help center, reporting and setup, works a monthly bill for the same four-person team on both, and ends with the case where neither is needed, which for many small teams is the honest answer.
Every price and plan detail below was read from Intercom's and Zendesk's own pricing pages and help centers on October 1, 2026. Both vendors changed their AI pricing during 2026, so treat the numbers as a dated snapshot and re-check them before you sign.

What is the difference between Intercom and Zendesk?
The real difference is what each product is built around. Intercom is built around its Messenger and treats every interaction as a conversation that Fin answers first; Zendesk is built around the ticket and treats every interaction as something to route, prioritise and track until someone closes it.
A messenger-first helpdesk is built around a chat widget and in-app messaging, so the inbox is a stream of conversations and the AI agent sits at the front of it. A ticketing-first helpdesk is built around tickets: each request gets a number, a status, an owner and rules that route and escalate it, whichever channel it arrived on.
You can see it in the entry plans. Intercom's Essential already includes Fin, the Messenger, a shared inbox with ticketing and a public help center, and every plan includes in-app chats, banners and tooltips, which points at software companies talking to users inside their app. Zendesk's Support Team is email and ticketing with macros and triggers; messaging, live chat and telephony arrive with Suite Team, and skills-based routing, IVR phone trees and SLAs with Suite Professional. That is a product built to run queues.
The two overlap more than their positioning suggests, but the depth sits in different places: Intercom's in the conversation and the AI agent, Zendesk's in routing, channels and administration.
How does Intercom pricing compare with Zendesk pricing?
Both charge per seat and then per AI resolution, but the units and rates differ. Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome with no included allowance; Zendesk includes a few automated resolutions per agent each month and lists $1.50 to $2.00 for each one after that. Zendesk's cheapest seat is lower, at $19 for email-only Support Team, but its first plan with chat costs $55 against Intercom's $29.
Intercom: seats plus $0.99 per Fin outcome
As of October 2026, Intercom's Essential, Advanced and Expert seats cost $29, $85 and $132 a month on annual billing. The page shows a monthly toggle, and the price data embedded in the same page lists $39, $99 and $139. The minimum is one full seat. Lite seats are free logins for colleagues who read and comment but do not message customers; Advanced includes 20 and Expert 50.
Fin is priced per outcome, a billing event Intercom counts once per conversation when the customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin responds, or when Fin completes a configured Procedure, including one that ends in a handoff. Conversations simply passed to your team without an outcome are not charged. If you run Fin on another helpdesk instead of Intercom's, the price is the same $0.99 with a 50-outcome monthly minimum and no seat costs. Eligible startups can get up to 93% off and a year of Fin free through Intercom's Early Stage program.
Zendesk: seats plus automated resolutions
Zendesk's seats cost $19 for Support Team, $55 for Suite Team and $115 for Suite Professional per agent a month on annual billing, and $25, $69 and $149 month to month. Suite Enterprise is priced by sales. Zendesk says AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan, and the billing unit is the automated resolution: a customer request the AI agent resolved without escalating to a person.
The pricing page's comparison table lists 5 included automated resolutions per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional, up to 10,000 a year, and extra resolutions at $1.50 each on a commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Zendesk's resolution allowances article describes the same allowance in dollars instead, $2 per seat a month on Team plans and $5 on Professional, and lets you choose between paying for overage or pausing the AI agent when the allowance runs out. The two pages disagree on the unit, so get the allowance and rate in writing.
What counts is narrower than at Intercom. Since May 18, 2026, Zendesk sorts every AI conversation into three resolution tiers: an assisted escalation and a contained resolution are not billed, and only a verified resolution, where an LLM check of the transcript confirms the request was satisfied, draws on the allowance. Our Zendesk AI agent decision guide covers the tiers and the allowance settings.

Worked example: what a four-person team pays on each
At list prices, a four-person team handling 1,500 conversations a month pays about $860 on Intercom Essential and about $1,300 to $1,700 on Zendesk Suite Team, and on both products the AI line, not the seats, is most of the bill.
The assumptions, so you can swap in your own:
- Four people reply to customers, so four full seats on both products, billed annually.
- 1,500 conversations a month reach the AI agent first, and 50% end in a billable AI resolution: 750 a month. That is the middle of the 30% to 70% range most vendors quote, as the ticket deflection benchmarks explain.
- Zendesk's included allowance is taken from its pricing page: 20 resolutions on Suite Team and 40 on Suite Professional for four agents.
| Plan | 4 seats | AI line | Monthly total | Per conversation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Essential | $116 | 750 × $0.99 = $742.50 | $858.50 | $0.57 |
| Intercom Advanced | $340 | 750 × $0.99 = $742.50 | $1,082.50 | $0.72 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, committed | $220 | 730 × $1.50 = $1,095 | $1,315 | $0.88 |
| Zendesk Suite Team, pay-as-you-go | $220 | 730 × $2.00 = $1,460 | $1,680 | $1.12 |
| Zendesk Suite Professional, pay-as-you-go | $460 | 710 × $2.00 = $1,420 | $1,880 | $1.25 |
Three things stand out.
The AI line is the bill. On Intercom Essential the AI line is 6.4 times the seats; on Zendesk Suite Team pay-as-you-go it is 6.6 times. If you have been comparing the two on seat price, you have been comparing the small number.
Intercom is cheaper at list prices on both lines. Its Essential seat is $29 against $55 for Suite Team, Zendesk's first plan with chat, and each resolution costs $0.99 against $1.50 to $2.00. Monthly billing widens the seat lines a little, to $156 on Intercom Essential and $276 on Zendesk Suite Team, without changing the order.
The billable counts will not be the same. Intercom bills a conversation where the customer simply stops replying after Fin's answer; Zendesk bills only what its verification model confirms. On the arithmetic, Zendesk Suite Team would have to verify fewer than about 23% of conversations on pay-as-you-go, or 30% on a commitment, to cost less than Intercom Essential at 50%. Run each trial on real traffic and read the billable count from each vendor's own report, not the dashboard's resolution rate.
Intercom Fin vs Zendesk AI agents: which AI agent is better?
Both are agentic AI agents: they answer from your knowledge, run multi-step procedures and call external systems. The practical differences are price, what each one bills for, and how far each reaches across channels.
Fin is included on every Intercom plan. Its pricing page lists Procedures, data connectors, multilingual answers with real-time translation, and testing through simulations and regression tests, and Fin deploys to chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, Slack, Instagram, Facebook Messenger and an API; Fin Voice is custom-priced for select customers. Intercom claims a 76% average resolution rate across more than 12,000 customers, a vendor figure measured on its own definition.
Zendesk AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan. In 2026 Zendesk removed the split between its Essential and Advanced AI agents, rolling agentic reasoning, multi-step procedures and external API integrations out to all plans between May and June, and stopped developing the legacy agents and bot builder by August 31. The plan table adds an agent builder that works from natural-language procedure descriptions and responses in more than 80 languages; AI agents on messaging need a Suite plan, and on voice need Zendesk's voice product. Zendesk says its agents can resolve "up to 80%+" of issues, again a vendor ceiling rather than a forecast.
On features the two are closer than their marketing suggests; the billing definitions are where they part. Intercom's outcome includes a customer who goes quiet, so a wrong answer followed by silence is paid; Zendesk's verified tier is fairer per unit but harder to forecast, because you cannot see the verification model's judgment in advance. Either way the cheapest resolution is a correct one, and the guide to stopping chatbot hallucinations covers the habits that keep wrong answers out of both bills.
Which handles more channels, Intercom or Zendesk?
Zendesk covers more channels natively and gives admins more control over routing them. Intercom includes chat, email and in-app messaging on every plan and charges per use for SMS, WhatsApp and phone.
On Zendesk, Suite Team adds messaging and live chat, telephony, omnichannel routing and social channels such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X, LINE and WeChat, with extra fees for social messaging and phone numbers and minutes. Suite Professional adds skills-based routing, an IVR phone tree, SLAs and satisfaction surveys. If customers phone, email and message on WhatsApp in roughly equal measure, Zendesk is the stronger product.
On Intercom, every plan includes unlimited live chat, support email and in-app chats, with email campaigns, SMS, WhatsApp and phone billed as you use them. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes, a workflow builder and round-robin assignment; Expert adds SLAs and a multibrand Messenger. The strength is that Fin and your people share one inbox and one customer record, so a human handoff happens inside the same conversation rather than in a new ticket elsewhere; the human handoff guide explains why that full context is what makes a handoff work.
Help center, reporting and integrations compared
Both include a help center and pre-built reporting; Zendesk goes further on multi-language help centers, custom reports and its app marketplace.
Help center. Intercom offers a public help center on Essential, private and multilingual content on Advanced, and multibrand on Expert. Zendesk's starts with Suite Team at one help center in one language; Suite Professional allows five, localised in more than 40 languages.
Reporting. Intercom includes pre-built reports and sells deeper AI analysis of conversations as a $99-a-month Pro add-on. Zendesk includes pre-built dashboards everywhere and adds custom dashboards, live dashboards and an hourly data refresh, instead of daily, on Suite Professional.
Integrations. Zendesk's Marketplace lists more than 1,000 prebuilt apps and integrations. Intercom has its own integrations directory, and Fin also runs on other helpdesks, including Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Front, Zoho and Gorgias.
Setup effort, admin and contract terms
Both offer a 14-day trial and monthly or annual billing. The setup difference is less about the AI agent, which each vendor says goes live quickly, than about how much helpdesk structure you configure around it.
Intercom's trial needs no card and includes every feature, Fin and the add-ons. Essential and Advanced are self-serve on monthly or annual terms, contracts are optional unless you need enterprise terms, and downgrades usually take effect at renewal. A small team on Essential has one inbox to set up.
Zendesk's trial runs on Suite Professional with Copilot included. Subscriptions are month to month, annual or multi-year, with 20% off advertised for annual billing. Zendesk's value lives in triggers, views, macros, routing rules and SLAs, and those need an owner who designs the queues and keeps the rules current, a job that is easy to underestimate on a team of three.

Where each one clearly wins
Each product is better for a different shape of support team. In these situations the choice is not close.
Choose Intercom when
- Most conversations happen in chat on your website or inside your product.
- You want the lower AI unit price and the AI agent and your people in one inbox.
- Several colleagues need read access: 20 free lite seats on Advanced and 50 on Expert.
- You qualify for the Early Stage startup program, which changes the first year's arithmetic entirely.
Choose Zendesk when
- Email, phone and social channels are a large share of your volume and need one queue with routing, IVR and SLAs.
- You run many agents and need departments, light agents (up to 100 on Suite Professional) and, on Enterprise, custom agent roles and a sandbox.
- Your support is mostly email, where Support Team's $19 seat is the cheapest entry in this comparison.
- You prefer to pay only for verified AI resolutions, or you need to choose the data center region, which Suite Professional allows.
Can you use Intercom Fin with Zendesk?
Yes. Fin can work inside an existing Zendesk account, so you can keep Zendesk's ticketing and add Intercom's AI agent without moving your team to a new inbox.
According to Fin's guide to how Fin integrates with Zendesk, it can answer Zendesk tickets from email or contact forms, Zendesk Messaging conversations on web, iOS, Android, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, and chats in its own Fin Messenger, which appear as Zendesk tickets. The price is $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum and no Intercom seats. One requirement affects the budget: the Messaging integration needs Zendesk's Sunshine API, which comes with Suite Professional and above.
It works the other way too: Zendesk now sells Forethought AI agents that, by its own description, run on other service platforms as well as its own. Either way, decide which AI agent answers which channel, so no conversation is handled, and billed, by two agents.
When you need neither Intercom nor Zendesk
If your team is one to five people, most conversations start on your website, and you handle fewer than a few thousand a month, a standalone AI support agent with a team inbox covers the same ground for a fraction of either bill. If you are still deciding whether you need people on chat at all, the live chat vs chatbot comparison covers that question first.
PepoChat is one such tool, and we make it, so weigh this section accordingly. It is an AI support agent that answers only from your own knowledge base (your website, documents, Notion or Google Drive pages and Help Center articles) and hands the conversation to a shared team inbox, emailing your team, when it cannot answer or the visitor asks for a person. It includes every feature on the free plan, with 200 AI replies and 5 knowledge sources a month. Starter is $49 a month for 2,000 replies and 3 members, Growth $149 for 10,000 replies and 10 members, with replies past the allowance at $10 per 1,000 and extra seats at $15; the pricing page has the full table.
For the worked example above, assuming two AI replies per conversation, 1,500 conversations is 3,000 replies: Starter plus 1,000 overage replies plus one extra seat comes to $74 a month. The unit is an AI reply rather than a resolution, so the bill follows message volume, not how many conversations the agent closes.
The limits are real: PepoChat is not a helpdesk. There is no email ticketing, phone queue, WhatsApp or Messenger channel, no SLAs or skills-based routing, and no HIPAA or SOC 2 certification, and the optional voice assistant runs on your own Vapi account, apart from the chat agent's knowledge base and inbox. If those matter, buy Intercom or Zendesk.
Teams already on Zendesk have a middle path: PepoChat's Zendesk integration creates a ticket with the conversation summary and checks an existing ticket's status, so only real escalations from the website reach your Zendesk queue.
What to do next
Write down three numbers before you book a demo: people who reply to customers, monthly conversations by channel, and the share you expect the AI to resolve. Work your own row of the table above for both vendors at 30% and at 70%, and ask each sales team for the AI rate, allowance and overage setting in writing. The Intercom Fin pricing breakdown goes deeper on outcomes, and the AI chatbot cost guide compares pricing models across more vendors. If "neither" fits, start a free PepoChat workspace without a card and run it beside your current inbox for a month before deciding.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Intercom or Zendesk better for a small business?
- For a small team that mostly chats with customers on a website or inside an app, Intercom is usually the better fit: one inbox, the Fin AI agent built in, and seats from $29 a month on annual billing as of October 2026. Zendesk suits small teams whose support is email-heavy or spread across phone and social channels. Teams under a few thousand chats a month may need neither.
- How much does Intercom cost compared with Zendesk?
- As of October 2026, Intercom seats cost $29, $85 or $132 a month on annual billing, plus $0.99 per Fin AI outcome. Zendesk seats cost $19 for email-only Support Team, $55 for Suite Team and $115 for Suite Professional on annual billing, plus automated resolutions beyond a small allowance at $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, according to its pricing page.
- Is Intercom Fin cheaper than Zendesk AI agents?
- Per billed resolution, yes at list prices: Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, while Zendesk lists $1.50 per committed and $2.00 per pay-as-you-go automated resolution after a small included allowance. Zendesk bills only resolutions its verification model confirms, while Intercom also bills when a customer simply stops asking for help, so compare billable counts from a pilot before deciding.
- Can I use Intercom Fin with Zendesk?
- Yes. Fin can answer Zendesk tickets from email and contact forms, Zendesk Messaging conversations and its own Fin Messenger, with Zendesk staying the system of record. Fin on another helpdesk costs $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum and no Intercom seats. Using it on Zendesk Messaging requires the Sunshine API, which comes with Suite Professional and above.
- Is Zendesk or Intercom better for omnichannel support?
- Zendesk is the stronger omnichannel helpdesk. Its Suite plans bring email, messaging, live chat, telephony and social channels such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram into one ticketing system, with skills-based routing and SLAs on Suite Professional. Intercom includes chat, email and in-app messaging on every plan and bills SMS, WhatsApp and phone as you use them, so it fits chat-first teams better.
- What is a cheaper alternative to Intercom and Zendesk?
- For a small, web-first team, a standalone AI support agent with a shared team inbox usually costs far less. PepoChat includes every feature on the free plan with 200 AI replies a month, and Starter is $49 a month for 2,000 replies and 3 members. It is not a full helpdesk: there is no email ticketing, phone or WhatsApp, but it can file tickets into Zendesk.
