HubSpot vs Intercom for Customer Service in 2026: Which to Pick
HubSpot Service Hub vs Intercom on October 2026 prices: seats, Breeze customer agent vs Fin, credits vs outcomes, channels and a worked bill for four agents.

Short answer
HubSpot suits teams whose sales and marketing already run on its CRM and who will pay for Professional seats to get the Breeze customer agent. Intercom suits chat-first teams that want the Fin AI agent and their people in one inbox from the cheapest plan. As of October 2026, Intercom costs $29 to $132 per seat a month plus $0.99 per Fin outcome; HubSpot's agent needs Service Hub Professional at $100 per seat plus $0.50 per resolution and a $1,500 onboarding fee.
Most teams comparing HubSpot and Intercom already use one of them for something else: marketing runs on HubSpot, or the product team put Intercom's Messenger in the app two years ago, and now support needs a home. The real question is whether support should live where the rest of the company already lives, and what that costs once the AI agent is switched on.
This comparison is for the support lead, founder or operations manager at a small or mid-sized team in that position. It puts the two products side by side on seats, AI pricing, channels, help center, reporting and setup, works a monthly bill for the same four-person team on both, and ends with the case where neither is the right purchase, which for small web-first teams is often the honest answer.
Every price and plan detail below was read from HubSpot's and Intercom's own pricing pages, product catalog and help centers on October 16, 2026. Both vendors changed their AI pricing during 2026, so treat the numbers as a dated snapshot and confirm them before you sign.

What is the difference between HubSpot and Intercom?
The difference is what sits at the center. HubSpot is built around the CRM record, so a support ticket is one more object attached to a contact alongside their deals, emails and marketing history. Intercom is built around the conversation, so the inbox is a stream of chats that Fin answers first and people join when needed.
A CRM-first helpdesk attaches support to a customer database that sales and marketing also use. Its strength is context: the rep answering a ticket sees the deal stage, the last campaign opened and every past conversation on one record. Its cost is that you buy the whole platform, and the parts that matter for support, the help desk workspace, the knowledge base and the AI agent, sit on the Professional tier.
A messenger-first helpdesk is built around a chat widget and in-app messaging. Intercom's cheapest plan already includes Fin, the Messenger, a shared inbox with ticketing and a public help center, and every plan includes in-app chats, banners and tooltips, which is why so many software companies use it to talk to users inside their product. The Intercom vs Zendesk comparison draws the same line between messenger-first and ticketing-first products; HubSpot sits in a third place, as a CRM that grew a help desk.
You can see it in what each vendor gives away. HubSpot's free tools exist to get your contacts into the CRM; Intercom's 14-day trial of everything, Fin included, exists to show you the AI agent.
How does HubSpot pricing compare with Intercom pricing?
Both charge per seat and then per AI resolution, but HubSpot's AI unit is half the price and its seats are two to three times the price. Intercom's Essential seat costs $29 on annual billing; HubSpot's cheapest seat that includes the AI agent is a $100 Service Seat on Professional, plus a $1,500 onboarding fee.
HubSpot: seats by type, plus credits per resolution
HubSpot sells two kinds of seat. A Service Seat gives full Service Hub functionality and is what a support rep needs; a Core Seat gives CRM access without the service tools. As of October 2026, HubSpot's catalog lists Service Hub Starter at $20 a month per Core Seat, Professional at $100 a month per Service Seat with $50 Core Seats, and Enterprise at $150 per Service Seat, billed annually, with $75 Core Seats. The product page shows a limited-time $10 Starter price for new customers, and when we read the pricing page on October 3 for the HubSpot Breeze alternative page it showed $90 for Professional on annual billing, about 10% under the catalog figure.
Professional and Enterprise come with a required one-time onboarding fee, $1,500 and $3,500, listed in the catalog as an additional cost. That fee is the single biggest difference in the first year's bill.
The AI agent is billed in HubSpot Credits, a usage currency that costs $0.010 per credit, or $10 for a monthly capacity pack of 1,000. Service Hub includes 500 credits a month on Starter, 3,000 on Professional and 5,000 on Enterprise, and unused credits expire at the end of each month. The customer agent consumes 50 credits for each resolved text conversation, which is $0.50, and 50 credits per minute of voice, which is in beta. On April 14, 2026 HubSpot moved the agent from $1.00 per conversation to $0.50 per resolved conversation, so older reviews quote the wrong unit.
What counts as a resolution matters. HubSpot's customer agent documentation says a conversation is resolved when the agent replies with a content source or completes an action and no visitor-initiated handoff follows within 72 hours of the visitor's last response; a lead the agent marks qualified or not qualified also counts. When the credits run out, the agent stops taking new conversations until the month resets or you buy more.
Intercom: seats plus $0.99 per Fin outcome
Intercom's Essential, Advanced and Expert seats cost $29, $85 and $132 a month on annual billing and $39, $99 and $139 month to month, with a one-seat minimum and no platform fee. Lite seats are free logins for colleagues who read and comment without messaging customers: none on Essential, 20 on Advanced and 50 on Expert. Copilot, the AI assistant for human agents, is $29 per agent a month on annual billing or $35 monthly.
Fin is included on every plan and billed per outcome: $0.99 each, with no included allowance. According to Intercom's resolution article, an outcome is counted when the customer confirms the answer helped, exits without asking for more, or goes silent for 24 hours after Fin's last answer, and when Fin completes a Procedure you configured to end in a handoff. A customer who asks for a person, an escalation triggered by Fin's default rules, a clarifying question nobody answers and a failed Procedure are not billed. Qualification outcomes, where Fin qualifies a sales lead, cost $9.99 each, which matters if Fin also fields your pricing page. The Intercom Fin pricing breakdown works through the outcome rules in detail.
Eligible startups can get Advanced at 93% off in year one through Intercom's Early Stage program, with 300 free Fin outcomes a month, then 50% off in year two and 25% in year three. If you qualify, the arithmetic below changes completely for three years.

Worked example: what a four-person team pays on each
At list prices, a four-person team handling 1,500 conversations a month pays about $860 a month on Intercom Essential and about $745 on HubSpot Service Hub Professional, plus HubSpot's $1,500 onboarding fee in the first month. Over a first year the two come out within a few hundred dollars of each other; from the second year HubSpot is cheaper at this volume.
The assumptions, so you can swap in your own:
- Four people reply to customers: four full seats on Intercom, four Service Seats on HubSpot, at the catalog's $100 monthly rate.
- 1,500 conversations a month reach the AI agent first, and 50% end in a billable AI resolution: 750 a month. That is the middle of the 30% to 70% range most vendors quote, as the ticket deflection benchmarks explain.
- HubSpot's 750 resolutions consume 37,500 credits; the plan includes 3,000, so 34,500 extra credits cost $345.
| Plan | 4 seats | AI line | Monthly total | Per conversation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Essential | $116 | 750 × $0.99 = $742.50 | $858.50 | $0.57 |
| Intercom Advanced | $340 | 750 × $0.99 = $742.50 | $1,082.50 | $0.72 |
| HubSpot Professional | $400 | 34,500 credits × $0.010 = $345 | $745, plus $1,500 onboarding once | $0.50 |
| HubSpot Enterprise | $600 | 32,500 credits × $0.010 = $325 | $925, plus $3,500 onboarding once | $0.62 |
Three things stand out.
HubSpot's AI is cheaper per resolution and its seats are dearer. At 750 resolutions a month HubSpot's AI line is about $397 lower, thanks to the $0.49 gap per resolution and the 3,000 included credits, and that outweighs its $284 higher seat line. Run the same table at 300 conversations and 150 resolutions and Intercom Essential wins, at about $265 against about $445 on HubSpot. The crossover, with these seat prices, is roughly 520 billable resolutions a month; with HubSpot's annual seat rate it falls to about 440.
The onboarding fee decides year one. Twelve months of Intercom Essential is about $10,300. Twelve months of HubSpot Professional is about $8,940 plus $1,500, about $10,440, or about $9,960 on the annual seat rate. Call year one a draw and year two a HubSpot win of roughly $1,400 to $1,800 at this volume.
The billable counts will not match. Both vendors bill a customer who goes quiet after an answer, but HubSpot waits 72 hours and Intercom 24, and HubSpot also bills lead qualifications at the normal rate while Intercom charges $9.99 for them. Pilot both on real traffic and read the billable count from each vendor's own report, not from the resolution rate on the dashboard.
Breeze customer agent vs Fin: which AI agent is better?
Both agents answer from your content, hand off to people and take actions in their own platform. Fin is the more mature product with the wider channel list and the longer track record; the Breeze customer agent has the advantage of reading the CRM record it sits on.
Fin is included on every Intercom plan and also sold on its own to run inside other helpdesks. Its pricing page lists Procedures, data connectors, multilingual answers with real-time translation and simulation testing. It deploys to live chat, email, the Messenger, Slack, WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram, Facebook Messenger and an API, and Fin Voice is custom-priced. Intercom claims Fin averages a 76% resolution rate across more than 12,000 customers, a vendor figure measured on Intercom's own outcome definition.
The Breeze customer agent requires a Professional or Enterprise edition of HubSpot. HubSpot's customer agent page says it is trained on your knowledge base, website, CRM data and historical conversations, can take unstructured content such as PDFs and meeting transcripts, and works on chat, email, forms, calling, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. HubSpot claims a 70% average resolution rate, with top teams at 90%, again on its own definition.
Three differences are practical. Fin bills from the first conversation, while HubSpot's included credits cover 60 resolutions on Professional before the meter starts. Fin can run on a helpdesk you already have; HubSpot's agent lives only in HubSpot. And CRM context cuts both ways: an agent that can answer about this customer's renewal has more to get wrong, so its content and permission settings deserve the checks in our guide to stopping chatbot hallucinations.
Which handles more channels, HubSpot or Intercom?
HubSpot bundles more channels into its tiers, including phone minutes; Intercom includes chat, email and in-app messaging everywhere and meters the rest.
On HubSpot, every tier includes live chat, team email, a shared inbox and a Facebook Messenger integration, with calling minutes rising from 500 a month on Starter to 3,000 on Professional and 12,000 on Enterprise. WhatsApp arrives on Professional with 1,000 messages a month, as does the help desk workspace that pulls those channels into one queue; conditional SLAs and skills-based routing are Enterprise only.
On Intercom, every plan includes unlimited live chat, support email, in-app chats, banners and tooltips, with email campaigns, SMS, WhatsApp and phone billed as you use them. If phone support matters, HubSpot's included minutes are the cheaper route; if the product is a web or mobile app and support happens inside it, Intercom's in-app messaging is the deciding feature. On either, the moment a person takes over should carry the whole conversation with it, as the human handoff guide explains.
Help center, reporting and integrations compared
Intercom includes a help center on every plan; HubSpot's knowledge base starts on Professional. Reporting runs the other way: HubSpot's CRM-wide reporting is deeper, while Intercom's is pre-built and support-specific.
Help center. Intercom offers a public help center on Essential, private and multilingual content on Advanced, and multibrand on Expert. HubSpot's knowledge base starts on Professional with one knowledge base and 2,000 articles, rising to 100 knowledge bases and 10,000 articles on Enterprise, alongside a customer portal where customers view and reply to their own tickets.
Reporting. HubSpot includes dashboards on every tier and custom reports from Professional, and because tickets share a database with deals and campaigns, a support report can join revenue data without an export. Intercom includes pre-built reports on every plan.
Integrations. Both cover the common CRMs, billing systems and project tools. The hidden cost is the join: if sales lives in HubSpot and support moves to Intercom, someone maintains the HubSpot-Intercom integration forever, and no pricing page shows that line.
Where each one clearly wins
Each product is the obvious choice for a different shape of company. Intercom is self-serve, with a no-card trial and monthly plans. HubSpot Professional comes with a required $1,500 onboarding fee and pipelines, properties and workflows that someone must design and keep current: a fair trade for a company already on HubSpot, and a CRM adoption for everyone else, as the AI chatbot cost guide shows.
Choose HubSpot when
- Sales and marketing already run on HubSpot and you want every ticket on the contact record next to the deal.
- You already pay for Professional seats, so the customer agent costs credits rather than a new platform.
- Phone support is a real channel: 3,000 included minutes on Professional is hard to match.
- You want outcome pricing at $0.50 rather than $0.99, and your volume is above a few hundred resolutions a month.
Choose Intercom when
- Support happens in chat and inside your product, and in-app messages, banners and tooltips are features you will use.
- You want the AI agent from the cheapest seat, with no onboarding fee and no CRM to adopt.
- Several colleagues need to read conversations without replying: 20 free lite seats on Advanced and 50 on Expert.
- You qualify for the Early Stage program, which makes the first year almost free.
Can you use Intercom Fin with HubSpot?
Yes. Fin's pricing page lists HubSpot among the helpdesks it runs on, alongside Salesforce, Freshworks, Dixa, Front, Zoho, Sprinklr and Gorgias, so a company on HubSpot can add Intercom's AI agent without moving its team.
The price is the same $0.99 per outcome, with a 50-outcome monthly minimum and no Intercom seats; the Early Stage discount does not apply. Against HubSpot's own agent at $0.50 per resolution, the case for Fin on HubSpot is quality and channels, and it is strongest when you are not already paying for the Professional seats that unlock the Breeze agent. Whichever agent you pick, let only one answer a given channel, so no conversation is billed twice.

When you need neither HubSpot nor Intercom
If your team is one to five people, most conversations start on your website, and you handle fewer than a few thousand a month, a standalone AI support agent with a team inbox covers the same ground for a fraction of either bill, and it can still write to HubSpot. Our roundup of free AI chatbots for a website compares the free plans; this section covers ours, so weigh it accordingly.
PepoChat is an AI support agent that answers only from your own knowledge base (your website, documents, Notion or Google Drive pages and Help Center articles) and hands the conversation to a shared team inbox, emailing your team, when it cannot answer or the visitor asks for a person. Every feature is on the free plan, with 200 AI replies and 5 knowledge sources a month. Starter is $49 a month for 2,000 replies and 3 members and Growth $149 for 10,000 replies and 10 members, with replies past the allowance at $10 per 1,000 and extra seats at $15; the pricing page has the full table. For the worked example above, 1,500 conversations at two replies each is 3,000 replies: Starter plus 1,000 overage replies plus one extra seat is $74 a month, billed per reply rather than per resolution, with no onboarding fee.
The HubSpot connection is the part that matters for this comparison. PepoChat's HubSpot integration connects with one-click OAuth, or with a Service Key if the button is not shown, and gives the agent two actions: find a contact by email to answer account questions, and create a ticket in your default pipeline when a person must follow up. Captured leads land on the Contacts page, as the lead generation guide describes. So a team on HubSpot's free or Starter CRM keeps HubSpot as the system of record and runs the AI agent, inbox and booking on PepoChat's free plan, without the Professional seats.
The limits are real: PepoChat is not a helpdesk. There is no email ticketing, phone queue, WhatsApp or Messenger channel, no SLAs or routing rules, no CRM of its own, and no SOC 2 or ISO certification, and the optional voice assistant runs on your own Vapi account, separate from the chat agent's knowledge base and inbox. If support arrives by email, phone and WhatsApp in equal measure, buy HubSpot or Intercom, and if email ticketing is the core of the job, the Freshdesk vs Zendesk comparison covers the ticketing-first products.
What to do next
Write down three numbers before you talk to either sales team: people who reply to customers, conversations a month by channel, and the share you expect the AI to resolve. Work your own row of the table above at 30% and at 70%, add HubSpot's onboarding fee to year one, and get each vendor's resolution definition in writing. If the Intercom alternative page's reasons for leaving sound like yours, or HubSpot's Professional gate is the only thing in the way, start a free PepoChat workspace without a card, connect HubSpot, and run it beside your current inbox for a month before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
- Is HubSpot or Intercom better for customer service?
- HubSpot is better when your sales and marketing already run on its CRM and you want tickets, deals and contacts on one record; Intercom is better when support happens in chat and inside your product and you want an AI agent from the cheapest plan. As of October 2026, HubSpot's AI agent needs Professional seats at $100 a month, while Intercom includes Fin from $29 a seat.
- How much does HubSpot Service Hub cost compared with Intercom?
- As of October 2026, HubSpot lists Starter at $20 a month per Core Seat, Professional at $100 per Service Seat with a required $1,500 onboarding fee, and Enterprise at $150 per Service Seat billed annually with $3,500 onboarding. Intercom lists Essential, Advanced and Expert at $29, $85 and $132 per seat a month on annual billing, or $39, $99 and $139 monthly, with no onboarding fee.
- Is HubSpot's Breeze customer agent cheaper than Intercom Fin?
- Per resolution, yes. The Breeze customer agent consumes 50 HubSpot Credits per resolved conversation, which is $0.50, and Service Hub Professional includes 3,000 credits a month, enough for 60 resolutions. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome with no included allowance. The catch is that the HubSpot agent needs Professional or Enterprise seats, so Intercom is cheaper below roughly 500 billable resolutions a month.
- Does HubSpot have an AI chatbot on the free plan?
- Not an AI agent. HubSpot's free tools cover two users with live chat carrying HubSpot branding, ticketing and bots limited to ticket creation, lead qualification and meeting booking. The Breeze customer agent, which answers from your knowledge base, website and CRM data, requires a Professional or Enterprise edition and is billed in HubSpot Credits per resolution as of October 2026.
- Can you use Intercom Fin with HubSpot?
- Yes. Fin is sold as a standalone AI agent that runs inside other helpdesks, and Fin's pricing page lists HubSpot alongside Salesforce, Freshworks, Zoho, Front, Dixa, Sprinklr and Gorgias. The price is $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum and no Intercom seats. It makes sense when you want Fin's quality and channels but are not paying for the Professional seats that unlock HubSpot's own agent.
- What is a cheaper alternative to HubSpot Service Hub and Intercom?
- For a small, web-first team, a standalone AI support agent with a team inbox. PepoChat includes every feature on the free plan with 200 AI replies a month, and Starter is $49 for 2,000 replies and 3 members. Its HubSpot integration finds contacts by email and creates tickets, so HubSpot stays the system of record. It is not a helpdesk: no email ticketing, phone or WhatsApp.
