Short answer

As of November 2026, AI customer support automation tools fall into six categories, each with its own meter: website AI agents (PepoChat free, then $39 a month; Intercom Fin $0.99 per outcome), helpdesk triage (Zendesk, Gorgias), agent copilots ($29 to $50 a seat), knowledge base AI (Help Scout at $0.75 per resolution), QA and sentiment analytics, and workflow glue (Zapier from $19.99 a month). Start with your knowledge base and a website agent.

Customer support automation is software that does one step of support work without a person: answering a question, routing a ticket, drafting a reply, writing a help article, scoring a conversation or moving data between apps. Vendors sell each step as a separate product with a separate meter.

This map is for teams of one to ten people deciding what to automate first. It sorts the market into six categories and judges them on the work removed per dollar and on a bill that stays predictable when the automation works.

PepoChat is our product; we include it where it fits and say where other tools are the better choice. Facts below were checked on vendor pages on 4 November 2026.

Quick comparison: the six categories of AI support automation

Support automation tools sort into six categories, and the pricing unit tells you more about the real cost than the headline price does.

How we chose the categories and example tools

We grouped tools by the job they take off a person's desk, then picked examples, mostly with published prices. Four criteria decided the examples:

  • Work removed. Answering a question removes a reply; drafting one only shortens it.
  • Pricing unit. Resolution-based pricing means you pay each time the AI closes a conversation without a person, so the bill grows as the AI improves.
  • Fit for a small team. A free plan or trial, and setup without a sales call.
  • Honest limits. Plan gates, beta labels and channel gaps.

We read each vendor's pricing page, help center and integration docs on 4 November 2026 and compared them on these criteria. We did not run paid trials.

1. AI agents on your website: what do they automate?

A website AI agent automates the first reply: it answers visitors from your content, runs lookups such as order status, and hands the conversation to a person when it cannot help. An AI support agent is that kind of chatbot; human handoff is the transfer to a person with the transcript attached.

Pricing units range from per AI reply on flat plans to per outcome or per conversation in the suites. For most small teams, this category is the first and largest win.

PepoChat

PepoChat is an AI support agent for your website with a team inbox built in, best for one-to-ten person teams whose questions arrive through the site and who want every feature on the free plan.

Pricing: As of November 2026, Free includes 200 AI replies a month; Starter is $39 a month or $390 a year for 2,000 replies and 3 members; Growth is $149 a month for 10,000 replies. On paid plans, extra replies cost $10 per 1,000; replies your team types are not counted.

Strengths: PepoChat learns from a website crawl of up to 200 pages, files, Notion, Google Drive and its built-in Help Center. Its 22 prebuilt actions include Stripe subscription status, Shopify order status and ticket creation in Zendesk or Freshdesk, plus custom HTTPS actions and step-by-step procedures. Handoff lands in a team inbox, with an email alert.

Limits: PepoChat runs in the web widget today, with WhatsApp and Messenger in limited rollout; there is no phone channel, and voice runs on your own Vapi account, separate from the chat agent's knowledge base. It has no compliance certifications, no self-serve spend cap and few public reviews so far.

Verdict: The cheapest website agent with human handoff in this map; pick a suite for email or phone.

Intercom Fin

Intercom Fin is an AI agent sold inside Intercom's helpdesk or on top of another helpdesk, best for chat-first teams that want AI and human agents in one inbox across chat, email and messaging apps.

Pricing: As of November 2026, Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, at most once per conversation, plus seats from $29 a month on annual billing ($19 for new customers) or $39 monthly, per the Intercom pricing page. Fin on another helpdesk has a 50-outcome monthly minimum. The trial is 14 days without a card.

Strengths: One Fin setup covers web chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, Slack and Discord, and Procedures run multi-step workflows.

Limits: There is no free plan. An outcome is billed when a customer stops replying for 24 hours after Fin's answer, and the Stripe and Shopify connectors work for US-hosted workspaces only.

Verdict: The strongest suite agent for chat-heavy teams with a budget.

Ada

Ada is an enterprise AI agent platform that runs one agent across voice, email, chat and social messaging, best for large teams already on Zendesk, Salesforce or Genesys.

Pricing: Not published; the pricing page is a demo request. Ada bills per conversation, or per resolution for "enterprises with specific needs".

Strengths: Ada works in 60 languages, takes actions through API, code and MCP tools, syncs knowledge every 15 minutes and lists SOC 2 and HIPAA among its compliance programmes.

Limits: Ada has no inbox of its own, starts with a sales call and invoices purchased resolutions up front.

Verdict: Enterprise volume and voice; more than a small team needs.

2. Helpdesk AI for triage, routing and tagging: what is ticket triage automation?

Ticket triage automation is AI that labels each incoming ticket by topic, intent, sentiment or language and uses those labels to tag, route and prioritize it. It answers nobody; it decides who answers first. It usually sits in higher helpdesk tiers and pays off once three or more people share a queue or tickets arrive on several channels.

Curved roller conveyors branch in different directions across a bright warehouse floor, with cardboard boxes and storage bins in the background
Triage works like a sorting line: each ticket is labelled on arrival and sent down the branch where the right person waits.

Zendesk intelligent triage

Zendesk's intelligent triage classifies every ticket by topic, sentiment, language and entities, and suits teams of five or more agents who need skills-based routing and SLAs across email, messaging, phone and social.

Pricing: Zendesk's help center says intelligent triage classifications come with Suite and Support Professional and above; Suite Professional is $115 an agent a month on annual billing or $149 monthly. Using the labels in workflows requires Copilot at $50 an agent a month, paid yearly. AI agents include 5 or 10 resolutions per agent a month, then $1.50 to $2.00 each.

Strengths: Omnichannel and skills-based routing, SLAs, and no charge for conversations the AI escalates.

Limits: There is no free plan, and triage that drives routing puts a five-agent team at $825 a month on annual billing before any AI resolutions.

Verdict: The most complete triage; heavy below five agents.

Gorgias intents and sentiment

Gorgias detects an intent such as Order::Refund for each ticket and a positive, negative or neutral sentiment for each customer message, and fits Shopify stores whose tickets arrive by email, chat, SMS and social.

Pricing: Intents and sentiment are on all helpdesk plans, from Starter at $10 a month for 50 tickets. The AI Agent costs $1.00 per automated interaction on monthly billing or $0.90 on annual, and each interaction also counts as a ticket.

Strengths: Gorgias's article on customer intents says Rules can use an intent or sentiment "as a condition to tag, route, prioritize, or reply to tickets automatically", and a ready-made template auto-tags them.

Limits: Sentiment is not shown on tickets, the AI Agent requires a connected Shopify store, and there is only a 7-day trial.

Verdict: The cheapest serious triage here, for Shopify brands.

3. Agent copilots: can AI draft support replies for your team?

Yes: an agent copilot is an AI assistant inside the helpdesk that drafts, rewrites and summarizes replies for a human agent, who checks and sends them. It is priced per agent seat, $29 to $50 a month as of November 2026: Intercom's Copilot is $29, and Help Scout includes unlimited AI Drafts on its Plus plan at $45 a user, both on annual billing.

A copilot shortens replies; an AI agent removes them. PepoChat's inbox has a smaller tool, an Enhance button that rewrites a teammate's draft for grammar and tone without drafting from the knowledge base.

Freshdesk Freddy AI Copilot

Freddy AI Copilot is Freshworks' per-agent assistant for Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni, best for teams already on Freshdesk Pro who want suggested replies on low-cost seats.

Pricing: $29 an agent a month on annual billing or $35 monthly, sold on Pro ($55 an agent a month annually) and Enterprise.

Strengths: The Reply Suggester drafts a reply from your solution articles and cites up to three of them, and Copilot orders conversations by customer sentiment.

Limits: Reply suggestions cover only the first customer message on email and portal tickets, and Copilot is not sold on the Growth plan.

Verdict: A low-cost copilot if you already run Freshdesk Pro.

Zendesk Copilot

Zendesk Copilot is a per-agent add-on covering features such as auto assist, suggested first replies, writing tools and ticket summaries, best for Zendesk teams on Suite Professional.

Pricing: $50 an agent a month, paid yearly.

Strengths: Auto assist proposes a Shopify order lookup, cancellation or refund for an agent to approve, and Copilot turns triage labels into routing.

Limits: It is the priciest copilot here, and Zendesk's pricing table does not say clearly which writing tools the $50 covers, so ask sales.

Verdict: Triage and agent assistance in one purchase.

4. Knowledge base and help center AI: how does AI keep answers current?

Knowledge base AI automates two jobs: answering customers from your help articles, and finding the questions your articles miss. Answering is priced per resolution; drafting is priced per article or included in a plan.

You need a knowledge base from day one, because every other category depends on written answers. PepoChat's Help Center feeds published articles to its agent automatically but does not draft articles; its AI topic labels show what to write next.

Help Scout Docs and Scout

Help Scout pairs Docs, its knowledge base, with Scout, an AI agent in the Beacon widget that answers from Docs, website pages and files, best for email-first small teams.

Pricing: Scout costs $0.75 per resolution on any paid plan, with three free months for new accounts and an optional spending cap. The Help Scout pricing page lists Standard at $25 a user a month on annual billing. Free includes one Docs site but stops replies after 100 contacts a month.

Strengths: There is no charge when the customer escalates or asks for more help, and Scout works in over 50 languages.

Limits: Scout cannot look up orders, payments or CRM data yet ("Coming Soon"), and website sources need a manual re-sync.

Verdict: The tidiest docs-plus-AI pairing for email-first teams.

HubSpot knowledge base agent

HubSpot's knowledge base agent, in beta, drafts new help articles from closed tickets and suggests edits to old ones, best for teams already running their CRM in HubSpot.

Pricing: The knowledge base agent needs Service Hub Professional or Enterprise; Professional is $90 a seat a month on annual billing, plus a $1,500 one-time onboarding fee, and includes 3,000 credits a month. Each generated article uses 200 credits, $2.00 at $0.010 a credit. HubSpot's customer agent then answers from those articles at $0.50 per resolution.

Strengths: Drafts come from your real ticket history, and accepting a suggested edit costs nothing.

Limits: It is in beta, works in one knowledge base at a time and needs at least five closed tickets; unused credits do not roll over.

Verdict: Writes help articles from your tickets; priced for HubSpot Professional teams.

5. QA, sentiment and analytics: how do you measure automated support?

QA and analytics tools automate the review step: they score conversations, label topics and sentiment, and show where the AI agent fails. Sentiment analysis is software that estimates how a customer feels from their words.

These features sit in add-ons or higher tiers, and you need them once you cannot read a weekly sample yourself; until then, the routine in our guide to support chatbot metrics is enough. Gorgias includes AI sentiment on every helpdesk plan. PepoChat's Analytics shows the share resolved by the agent versus handed to the team, AI-labelled topics and visitor thumbs-up or thumbs-down ratings, but does not score the sentiment of each message.

Intercom Pro add-on

Intercom's Pro add-on adds AI analysis on top of Fin, including CX Score, a 1-to-5 rating of each eligible conversation without a survey, best for Intercom teams at volume.

Pricing: From $100 a workspace a month, with 500 analysed conversations and 6,000 credits included.

Strengths: AI Topics, Trends, Monitors and custom AI scorecards.

Limits: CX Score needs Fin in use and scores only closed chat or email conversations with at least two replies from each side.

Verdict: Quality monitoring for busy Intercom workspaces.

HubSpot topics and surveys

HubSpot's help desk groups conversations into AI topics, including Voice of Customer topics with a CX Score per topic, best for teams that want feedback on the CRM record.

Pricing: Topics and CSAT surveys need a Service Hub Professional or Enterprise seat, from $90 a month on annual billing.

Strengths: Customer agent reports track resolution rate, deflections and handoffs over time.

Limits: Neither is on Starter or the free tools.

Verdict: Good if you already own Professional.

6. Workflow glue: do you need Zapier for support automation?

You need Zapier only for apps your support tool does not connect to: native integrations and webhooks cover most support handoffs. A webhook is a message one app sends to a URL when something happens, such as an escalation.

Zapier

Zapier connects thousands of apps without code, best for small teams that need a chat lead in a Google Sheet, Mailchimp or a CRM with no native integration.

Pricing: The Zapier pricing page lists Free at 100 tasks a month without webhooks, and Professional at $19.99 a month billed yearly or $29.99 monthly for 750 tasks. Zapier says "a task is counted whenever Zapier successfully completes a unit of work for you"; failed actions and triggers do not count.

Strengths: A Catch Hook trigger gives any tool a URL to POST to, and one event can update several apps.

Limits: Catch Hook is not on Free, multi-step Zaps use several tasks per event, and optional overage costs 1.25 to 2.5 times the base task rate.

Verdict: The right glue for the long tail of apps; check native integrations first.

Native webhooks and REST APIs

Most support tools include webhooks and an API in the plan price, with no per-task meter. PepoChat sends signed webhooks when a conversation is created, escalated or resolved, a lead is created or a data form is submitted, and its REST API reads conversations and contacts and posts replies as the team; both are on every plan, Free included. Help Scout includes webhooks from Standard, and Zendesk includes API access on every plan.

Someone has to write the code that receives a webhook. Without a developer, PepoChat's prebuilt Zapier action lets the agent post a visitor's request, name and email to a Catch Hook, and our guide to sending chatbot leads to Google Sheets or Mailchimp covers the field mapping.

Glue tools are the gears between apps: each event from the support tool turns the next step in a sheet, a CRM or a team channel.

Which order should a small team automate support in?

Automate in the order the work piles up: write down your answers, put an AI agent in front of the repeated questions, wire up handoff and alerts, and buy triage, copilots and QA only once several people share the queue.

  1. Week 1, answers. Tag two weeks of conversations, rank the top ten reasons and write an answer for each; our guide to reducing support tickets covers the tagging.
  2. Week 2, a website AI agent with human handoff. Keep a person one message away and measure the share it resolves as our AI ticket deflection benchmarks explain, not by a vendor average.
  3. Week 3, alerts and glue. Escalations to email or Slack, leads to your CRM; native integrations first, Zapier for gaps.
  4. Month 2, read-only actions. Order, subscription and ticket status are safe; keep refunds with a person, as our piece on agentic AI in customer service argues.
  5. At three or more people, triage and routing.
  6. When people still type most replies, copilots.
  7. When you can no longer read a weekly sample, QA and sentiment.

How much does support automation cost a two-person team?

For a two-person team, the AI agent layer costs from about $39 to about $618 a month at 500 conversations, and from about $59 to about $2,118 at 2,000, depending mostly on the pricing unit. These are estimates from list prices, not quotes. Assumptions: monthly billing, the AI handles every conversation first and resolves half, and two AI replies per conversation for PepoChat.

Stack (two people)About 500 conversations a monthAbout 2,000 conversations a monthWhat drives the bill
PepoChat Starter$39$59: 2,000 extra replies at $10 per 1,000AI replies
Help Scout Standard with Scout$247.50: $60 seats plus 250 resolutions at $0.75$810Resolutions
HubSpot Service Hub Professional$295: $200 seats plus 190 resolutions past the included credits$670Credits, plus $1,500 onboarding once
Freshdesk Omni Growth with Freddy AI Agent$315: $70 seats plus 5 packs of 100 sessions$1,050Sessions, counted on every AI chat
Intercom Essential with Fin$325.50: $78 seats plus 250 outcomes$1,068Outcomes
Zendesk Suite Team$618: $138 seats plus 240 resolutions at $2.00$2,118Resolutions past the 10 included

Prices from each vendor's own pages, checked 4 November 2026. HubSpot's $100 seat is the monthly price on an annual commitment; Help Scout's three free months and Freshdesk's one-time 500 sessions are left out.

The metered bills grow two to three and a half times when volume quadruples, because they charge more as the AI succeeds, while the flat reply plan barely moves. Add $29.99 a month for Zapier Professional if you need it, and $29 to $50 a seat for a copilot. Gorgias is left out because its AI Agent requires Shopify, and Ada because it publishes no prices.

Frequently asked questions

What customer support tasks can AI automate?
As of 2026, AI can answer repeated questions from your own content, look up orders or subscriptions, create tickets, label and route incoming tickets by topic and sentiment, draft and summarize replies for agents, write help articles from closed tickets, score conversations for quality and move leads between apps. Refunds, exceptions and upset customers should still reach a person through a clear human handoff.
What should you automate first in customer support?
Start with written answers, then an AI agent. Tag two weeks of conversations, write an answer for each of the top ten reasons in a help center or knowledge base, and put a website AI agent with human handoff in front of those questions. Add alerts, read-only actions, triage, copilots and QA later, as volume and team size grow.
How much does customer support automation cost?
As of November 2026, from $0 to a few thousand dollars a month. PepoChat is free for 200 AI replies a month and $39 for 2,000. Intercom Fin charges $0.99 per outcome on top of seats, Help Scout $0.75 per AI resolution, Zendesk $1.50 to $2.00 per resolution past a small allowance, and agent copilots $29 to $50 per seat.
Will AI automation hurt customer satisfaction?
It can, if the bot blocks the way to a person or answers from guesswork. Keep the AI answering only from your own content, make human handoff one message away, pass the transcript so customers never repeat themselves, and read a sample of conversations every week. Watch visitor ratings and the share of chats handed to the team, not only the deflection number.
What is ticket triage automation?
Ticket triage automation is AI that reads each incoming ticket, labels its topic, intent, sentiment or language, and uses those labels to tag, route and prioritize it. Zendesk's intelligent triage needs a Professional plan, plus the Copilot add-on to drive workflows, while Gorgias detects intents and sentiment on all helpdesk plans. It pays off once three or more people share a queue.
Do I need Zapier for support automation?
Usually not at first. Most support tools include native integrations, webhooks and an API that cover alerts, tickets and CRM updates, and Zapier fills the gaps, such as a Google Sheet or an app with no integration. As of November 2026, Zapier's Free plan has 100 tasks a month but no webhooks; Professional costs $19.99 a month billed yearly or $29.99 monthly.
