Short answer

As of November 2026, the best AI support agent for a website depends on what it must do after it answers. Chatbase is the strongest all-rounder for your site plus messaging apps, from $40 a month. PepoChat is the best free start: a 200-page crawl, team inbox, human handoff and actions on its free plan, then $39. CustomGPT.ai leads on cited answers over large libraries, from $99. Intercom Fin suits teams that want a full helpdesk.

You want an assistant that answers customers from your own pages at 11 p.m. without making things up. Every tool here does that. They differ on how much of your site they read, how often they re-read it, whether a person can step in, and what the bill looks like with real traffic.

This comparison is for small businesses, SaaS founders and support leads choosing a first website agent. An AI support agent is software that answers visitors from your own knowledge base, takes actions such as an order lookup, and hands the conversation to a person when it should; our explainer on what an AI support agent is covers the difference from a plain chatbot.

PepoChat is our product; we include it where it fits and say where other tools are the better choice. Facts below were checked on vendor pages on 4 November 2026.

How we chose these website AI agents

We compared the ten tools on five things that decide whether a website agent works for a small team.

  1. How your site gets in: the crawl page limit, sitemap import and file types.
  2. How fresh it stays. Re-sync is the scheduled re-read of your pages, so a new price reaches the agent without anyone re-uploading anything.
  3. Whether it stays grounded. Grounding means the agent answers only from passages retrieved from your content and says "I don't know" when nothing matches, instead of guessing from the model's general knowledge.
  4. What happens next. A human handoff is the moment the AI stops and a person takes over the same conversation with the transcript in view. Actions such as order status count here too.
  5. The price for a typical small site, worked out at 500 and 2,000 conversations a month below.

We read each vendor's pricing page, help center and integration docs on 4 November 2026 and compared them on the criteria above.

1. Chatbase: best for one agent on your site and messaging apps

Chatbase is an AI agent builder that trains on your website, files and Notion pages and deploys one agent to your website, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Slack, so it fits best when customers write from several apps.

Pricing: as of 4 November 2026, Hobby is $40 a month, or $32 billed yearly, for 700 message credits, one agent, two members and 40 MB of training content. Basic is $150 ($120 yearly) for 4,000 credits; Business is $500 ($400) for 15,000. A model request costs 1 to 5 credits by model, and an answer that runs an action can take two requests. Extra credits cost $40 per 1,000; removing the badge is $99 a month. No free plan, a 7-day trial.

Strengths: the widest model menu here, from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek and others, on every plan. The data sources guide covers a homepage crawl, a sitemap or single links. Shopify, Calendly and messaging channels are on Hobby; Basic adds Stripe, nine helpdesk connectors and voice.

Limits: weekly auto re-sync and the Helpdesk inbox both start on Basic at $150, so on Hobby you press "Resync now" yourself and a person has nowhere inside Chatbase to answer. Scanned PDFs without a text layer are not supported, and the agent shows "currently unavailable" when credits run out.

Verdict: the most capable builder here; budget for Basic if a person must answer.

2. PepoChat: best free plan with human handoff and actions

PepoChat is an AI support agent for websites with a team inbox built in, and it is the best fit for a small business that wants the crawl, human handoff and actions working before paying anything.

Pricing: Free includes 200 AI replies a month, 5 knowledge sources and one member, with no credit card. Starter is $39 a month or $390 a year for 2,000 replies and 3 members; Growth is $149 a month or $1,490 a year for 10,000 replies, 10 members and no PepoChat branding. Extra replies cost $10 per 1,000, team replies never count, and every feature is on every plan except new-lead emails.

Strengths: a crawl reads up to 200 pages, 3 levels deep, respects robots.txt and counts as one knowledge source, as the add your website guide explains; pages are re-fetched weekly. When nothing matches, the agent says so and offers your team, and the chat lands in the team inbox with an email alert. It runs 22 prebuilt actions, such as Shopify order status and Stripe subscription checks, plus custom HTTPS actions; none moves money. Install is one script tag or a WordPress plugin.

Limits: web widget and hosted chat page today, with WhatsApp and Messenger in limited rollout and no Instagram, SMS or phone. One AI model, no citations under answers, no SOC 2, ISO or HIPAA certification. A site over 200 pages needs several crawls, and Free's weekly refresh pauses after 30 days without conversations. A young product with few public reviews.

Verdict: the cheapest complete setup for a site whose support arrives through the website.

Most website agents are set up by the owner between other jobs, so the crawl, the handoff and the price have to work without a support team behind them.

3. CustomGPT.ai: best for cited answers over large document libraries

CustomGPT.ai is a retrieval platform that builds agents from websites, documents and connected apps and links every answer to its source, so it fits documentation-heavy or regulated teams whose visitors must check answers.

Pricing: the CustomGPT.ai pricing page lists Standard at $99 a month, or $89 billed yearly, for 1,000 queries, 10 agents, 3 members and 5,000 documents per agent. Premium is $499 ($449) for 5,000 queries and 25 agents. A message costs one or two queries on Standard, by CustomGPT's own docs, and lead capture, web search, deeper context and connector actions add more. Extra queries cost $375 a month per 2,500, and the 7-day trial needs a card.

Strengths: a source link on every answer, 60 million words of storage on Standard and more than 1,400 file formats. Standard connects sitemaps, WordPress, Google Drive, Notion, Confluence and Zendesk or HubSpot knowledge bases; actions, Stripe among them, run through MCP connectors.

Limits: there is no inbox where your team replies; the documented escalation is a "Talk to a Human" button that links to your email, phone or booking page. Website auto-sync and badge removal start on Premium at $499. Agents stop answering when queries run out.

Verdict: pick it when cited, auditable answers matter more than live chat.

4. Intercom Fin: best for support teams that need a full helpdesk

Intercom Fin is the AI agent inside Intercom's customer service suite, and it fits a support team that wants the agent, inbox, ticketing and help center from one vendor and can budget per outcome.

Pricing: Fin costs $0.99 per outcome on every plan, plus seats: Essential is $39 a month, or $29 billed annually ($19 for new customers), and Advanced and Expert are $85 and $132 annually. Intercom counts an outcome when a customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completes a procedure, "including handoffs", once per conversation. Lead qualifications cost $9.99. Resolution-based pricing is billing per conversation the AI closes, so the bill grows as the agent improves.

Strengths: Intercom's website sync guide allows 4,000 pages per source and 100 domains, re-synced weekly. Behind Fin sit a full inbox, ticketing and a help center, with SMS, WhatsApp and phone as paid channels.

Limits: after a source's first 90 days, scheduled syncs pause unless one of its pages was used in a Fin answer in the last 90 days. An outcome is also billed when the customer stops replying for 24 hours after Fin's last answer, so a busy month gets expensive.

Verdict: the strongest option for a staffed team; more than a small site needs.

5. SiteGPT: best for large sites with handoff on every plan

SiteGPT is a website chatbot builder whose cheapest plan reads up to 1,000 pages and includes human support, so it fits a content-heavy site that wants a person able to step in.

Pricing: Starter is $59 a month, or $468 a year, for 1,000 pages, one chatbot, one member and 4,000 GPT-4.1 mini or 400 GPT-4.1 messages. Growth is $129 ($79 yearly) for 10,000 pages; Scale is $429 ($259) for 50,000. SiteGPT's plans and limits page says "A visitor's message is 1 message, and the chatbot's reply is 1 message", and new chatbots start on GPT-4.1, which counts ten times, so Starter answers about 200 questions until you switch to mini. The trial needs a card.

Strengths: human support on any plan: the AI escalates when a visitor asks for a person or is frustrated, then stops while your team replies from Chat History. Answers can link to source pages, and current plans keep answering when messages run out.

Limits: Starter has no automatic re-sync; Growth refreshes monthly and Scale weekly. SiteGPT says it "cannot check an order, a booking, stock levels, or a customer's account", and channels such as Slack start on Growth.

Verdict: big page allowances with a human path on every plan.

6. Wonderchat: best free plan with live chat handover and messaging channels

Wonderchat is an AI agent with a built-in help desk and live chat handover on every plan, Free included, and it fits a small team that wants Messenger, Instagram and email answered next to the website from the start.

Pricing: the Wonderchat pricing page lists Free with 50 AI replies a month, one agent, 2 seats and 100 webpages. Starter is $39 a month, or $32.50 billed yearly, for 500 replies, unlimited seats and 200 webpages; Basic is $149 ($125) for 3,000 replies and 1,000 webpages; Scale is $499 ($417) for 10,000 replies.

Strengths: live chat handover and a shared inbox on Free, with website, email, Messenger, Instagram and Telegram channels. Shopify connects on Free, Calendly and Cal.com from Starter, Zendesk or Freshdesk tickets from Basic.

Limits: 50 free replies cover a few days of traffic, and at the limit the agent stops until you top up, at an unpublished price. Webpages retrain monthly from Starter and weekly only on Scale, and badge removal is listed only on Enterprise.

Verdict: a generous free inbox with a small free AI allowance.

7. Chatling: best low-cost builder with a long model menu

Chatling is a no-code AI chatbot builder with a free plan and a $25 entry tier, and it fits a small business that wants to pick the AI model and pay little to start.

Pricing: Free includes 200 AI credits a month, 500,000 characters of knowledge and one seat. Starter is $25 a month, or $21 billed yearly, for 1,750 credits and weekly auto-sync; Growth is $75 ($63) for 6,000 credits and daily sync; Scale is $295. A reply costs 0.5 to 25 credits by model, and Free's models cost 5, so Free is about 40 replies. Extra credits are $10 per 1,000; badge removal is $35 a month until Scale.

Strengths: Chatling's data source docs say the crawler reads up to 1,000 pages, with a sitemap source beyond that. A live chat inbox with human handoff is on every plan, Cal.com booking works on Free, and WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger start on Starter.

Limits: a premium model can turn 1,750 credits into fewer than 100 answers. Free has no auto-sync, Zendesk and HubSpot actions start on Growth, and order or billing lookups need a custom HTTP request action.

Verdict: the lowest paid entry price, if you stay on an inexpensive model.

8. DocsBot: best for documentation sites that keep their helpdesk

DocsBot is an AI agent built for documentation and support content, and it fits a software company that wants answers across a large docs site while keeping its helpdesk for the human side.

Pricing: the DocsBot pricing page lists Free with 100 AI credits a month and 50 source pages, without actions, escalation or refresh. Personal is $49 a month ($492 a year) for one user, 5,000 credits, 5,000 pages and monthly refresh; Standard is $149 for 15,000 credits, 15,000 pages, 5 users and weekly refresh; Business is $499. A message starts at one credit; larger models and actions cost more.

Strengths: large page allowances from $49, over two dozen source types, with resolved helpdesk tickets from Standard, and answers with source links. Calendly and Cal.com start on Personal, Stripe actions including refunds of the latest payment on Standard, and escalations arrive with a drafted ticket summary.

Limits: no live chat inbox of its own: escalation, from Standard at $149, sends the visitor to your support link or opens your existing chat widget. The bot stops at the credit limit, and an unbranded widget needs Business.

Verdict: a strong front line for docs-heavy software with an existing helpdesk.

9. Tidio Lyro: best for small stores that want live chat first

Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk tool with an AI agent called Lyro, and it fits a store that wants people answering chat now and an AI it can grow into.

Pricing: Free includes 50 billable conversations a month, counted only when your team replies, 10 seats and 50 Lyro conversations for the account's lifetime. Starter is $29 a month ($24.17 yearly); Growth starts at $59 ($49.17). Lyro is a separate quota from $39 a month for 50 AI conversations ($32.50 yearly) up to $700 for 1,000, counted once a conversation has "at least one reply from our AI Agent".

Strengths: live chat, ticketing, email, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp on every plan, with 10 seats. Tidio says "Lyro works only with the content and guidance you provide", and Lyro hands over to a person, or creates a ticket when nobody is online.

Limits: Lyro scans up to 100 priority pages at a time and 500 URLs in all, re-synced automatically only on Plus. The AI is a second meter, and Lyro's Shopify order template is a Plus feature, from $300 a month, or for selected Lyro subscribers.

Verdict: a live chat tool first, with AI as a paid extra.

10. Crisp: best for a shared inbox across channels with AI on top

Crisp is a shared inbox for chat, email and messaging apps with an AI agent called Hugo, and it fits a team that mainly wants people working one inbox, with AI on routine questions.

Pricing: Crisp charges per workspace, not per seat. Free has 2 seats and no AI; Mini is $45 a month with 4 seats and $5 of Hugo credits, around 90 automated conversations by Crisp's count; Essentials is $95 with 10 seats and $25 (around 450); Plus is $295 with 20 or more seats and $75 (around 1,350). Crisp estimates a Hugo conversation at $0.05 to $0.10.

Strengths: a shared inbox with shortcuts and private notes, with WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS on Essentials. Crisp help articles reach Hugo as soon as you publish them, and when credits run out new chats go to your operators instead of failing.

Limits: Crisp's Hugo training guide says "We do not automatically track and update your web content automatically", so you refresh crawls by hand, and the crawler "will not execute javascript". Order and billing tools are positioned as a Plus feature.

Verdict: pick it for the inbox; the AI allowance is modest on lower tiers.

How much does a website AI agent cost at 500 and 2,000 conversations a month?

At 500 conversations a month the tools cost about $25 to $350; at 2,000 the flat plans barely move while the per-outcome meter passes $1,000.

Assumptions: two AI replies per conversation, monthly billing, the cheapest plan that covers the volume, a one-credit model where credits vary, and half of Intercom conversations counted as outcomes. Estimates from list prices, not quotes.

The model and the human path move these totals most: premium models multiply credit use, and Chatbase and DocsBot need about $150 before a person can take over.

How do you check a website AI agent before you pay?

Run five tests on every shortlisted tool during its trial or free plan.

  1. Ask a question your site does not answer. A grounded agent says so and offers a person; if it invents a policy, see our guide to stopping chatbot hallucinations.
  2. Change one price and note when the agent picks it up.
  3. Check a JavaScript-rendered page. Several crawlers, PepoChat's and Crisp's among them, read only the server's HTML, so upload such content as a file.
  4. Ask for a person while your team is offline.
  5. Load the widget on a slow phone. Our widget page speed test measured ten widgets adding 3.8 KB to 649 KB before anyone clicks.

Preparing pages and files is covered in our guide to training an AI chatbot on your website and PDFs.

Which website AI agent should you choose?

What to do next

Frequently asked questions

Can I train an AI agent on my website for free?
Yes. As of November 2026, PepoChat's free plan crawls up to 200 pages of your site as one knowledge source and includes 200 AI replies a month, a team inbox and human handoff. Chatling's free plan gives 200 AI credits, about 40 replies on its free models, Wonderchat's gives 50 AI replies and DocsBot's 100 credits over 50 pages. Chatbase, CustomGPT.ai and SiteGPT offer trials only.
How many pages can an AI chatbot learn from?
It depends on the vendor and the plan. As of November 2026, PepoChat crawls up to 200 pages per crawl, Chatling up to 1,000, Crisp's Hugo up to 2,000 per domain on Essentials and Plus, and Intercom Fin up to 4,000 per website source. SiteGPT allows 1,000 pages of 2,500 characters on Starter, DocsBot 5,000 source pages on Personal, and Chatbase caps training text at 40 MB.
How do I stop a website chatbot from making things up?
Choose a tool that answers only from passages retrieved from your own content and says it does not know when nothing matches, then test it with questions your site does not answer. Keep one version of each fact on your pages, remove outdated pages and give the agent a handoff path to a person. Source links under answers, as CustomGPT.ai and DocsBot show, let visitors check.
How often does an AI chatbot re-read my website?
It ranges from never to daily. As of November 2026, PepoChat re-fetches web pages weekly on every plan, Chatbase weekly from its $150 Basic plan, Intercom Fin weekly, SiteGPT monthly on Growth and weekly on Scale, and Chatling daily on Growth. Crisp, and Tidio below its Plus plan, refresh website pages only when you press a button, so changes wait until someone remembers.
Will a chat widget slow my website down?
Usually not by much. In our October 2026 Lighthouse test of ten widgets on a blank page, they added between 3.8 KB and 649 KB of downloads and at most 36 ms of Total Blocking Time, and every page still scored 100 for performance. What differs is whether the full chat app downloads before a visitor clicks; PepoChat can wait for the first click.
What is the difference between an AI support agent and a chatbot?
An AI support agent answers from your own knowledge base, takes actions such as an order lookup or ticket creation, and hands the conversation to a person when it cannot help. A traditional chatbot follows a fixed script or only answers questions. Most tools in this comparison can act as agents, but which actions and which handoff you get depends on the plan.
