Short answer

As of November 2026, the best AI chatbot plugin for WordPress depends on where you want the AI to run. AI Engine is the most-installed AI-first chatbot plugin and runs on your own API key, with Pro from $59 a year. Tidio suits stores that want live chat plus Lyro AI, from $39 a month. Hyve Lite gives 500 free hosted AI messages a month. PepoChat adds a team inbox and WooCommerce order lookup on a free plan.

Search the WordPress.org plugin directory for "ai chatbot" and you get more than 1,400 results. The few worth a look split into two kinds: plugins that run the AI inside WordPress on your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google key, and plugins that connect your site to a hosted service that runs the AI for you.

This comparison is for WordPress site owners, WooCommerce merchants and agencies. "Best" means the bot answers from your own content, can bring in a person, costs a predictable amount and is still maintained. Install counts, ratings and update dates come from the WordPress.org plugin API, read on 4 November 2026.

PepoChat is our product; we include it where it fits and say where other tools are the better choice. Facts below were checked on vendor pages on 4 November 2026.

Best AI chatbot plugins for WordPress compared (November 2026)

Five of the nine plugins connect WordPress to a hosted service, three run the AI inside WordPress on your own API key, and Hyve Lite can do either. PepoChat is the only one whose free plan includes a ready-made WooCommerce order lookup.

What do the WordPress.org numbers say about each plugin?

On 4 November 2026, eight of the nine plugins were tested up to WordPress 7.1.4, the current release, and seven had shipped an update in the previous five weeks. The exception on both counts is tawk.to, tested up to 6.9.11 and last updated on 14 January 2026; Tidio's last update was on 1 September.

Read from the WordPress.org plugin API (api.wordpress.org/plugins/info/1.2) and checked against the directory pages on 4 November 2026.

Active installs is a rounded estimate WordPress.org makes from the sites that check in for updates; it measures reach, not AI quality. Tested up to is the newest WordPress version the developer says the plugin works with. Installs also count live chat: tawk.to's figure includes every site that runs it only for free human chat. Small rating counts swing, since Hyve Lite's 4.3 is five five-star ratings and one one-star. And hosted vendors answer support on their own help desks, so "0 of 0" threads does not mean no support.

Since our WooCommerce chatbot comparison read the directory on 19 October 2026, Crisp shipped its first plugin update since April 2025 and its install band fell from 20,000+ to 10,000+. AI Engine needs PHP 8.1, the highest requirement here. We did not rank Chatway Live Chat (30,000+ installs) or AI Puffer (10,000+) because we did not verify their pricing and AI features.

How we chose these nine plugins

We ranked the plugins by what each is best for, on six criteria:

  1. Where the AI runs and who holds the API key.
  2. What it learns from: posts, pages, PDFs, a crawl or a product catalog.
  3. WooCommerce order status, and what the shopper must prove first.
  4. Human handoff: whether a person can take over, and where they reply.
  5. Monthly cost at real volume, including model usage billed by a provider.
  6. Plugin health, from the WordPress.org numbers above.

We read each vendor's pricing page, help center and integration docs on 4 November 2026 and compared them on these criteria. We did not run paid trials.

Where does the AI run: inside WordPress or on a hosted service?

The AI runs either inside WordPress, where your site sends each question to OpenAI, Anthropic or Google with your own API key, or on a hosted service that runs the model and bills you a plan.

A bring-your-own-key plugin is a WordPress plugin that keeps your content and conversations in your WordPress database and calls an AI provider with a key you pay for. AI Engine, MxChat and WPBot work this way, and Hyve Lite can. The model cost is small: our token cost breakdown put a three-reply conversation at about $0.0015 on a small OpenAI model and $0.01 to $0.04 on mid-tier ones at 22 October 2026 prices. The work is yours: keys, spending limits, model retirements. AI Engine's FAQ, for instance, tells users who hit OpenAI's "Error 429" quota message to set billing limits in their OpenAI account.

A hosted chatbot plugin is a thin plugin that loads a vendor's chat widget; the vendor runs the model and stores the conversations. Tidio, tawk.to, Crisp, Smartsupp and PepoChat work this way: you pay a plan, usually get a team inbox built in, and name the vendor in your privacy policy.

Bring-your-own-key plugins put the AI settings, API keys and usage limits in your own WordPress admin, which suits whoever already runs the site day to day.

1. AI Engine: best for running AI inside WordPress on your own key

AI Engine by Meow Apps is the most-installed AI-first chatbot plugin for site visitors in the WordPress.org directory, and it is best for technical site owners who want the chatbot to run inside WordPress on their own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Mistral key.

Pricing: The plugin is free; you pay your AI provider for usage. As of 4 November 2026, AI Engine Pro costs $59 a year for one site, $79 for five or $149 for 20, or $299 once for up to five sites. The Woo Basics add-on, which answers "where's my order?", costs $9 a year for one site.

Strengths: 90,000+ installs and 4.9 stars from 874 ratings, by far the most reviewed plugin here. The free chatbot has themes, file uploads, conversation memory and GDPR tools. Pro adds embeddings (a knowledge base from your content and PDFs), voice, usage limits per role and function calling into WordPress, WooCommerce or your own APIs.

Limits: Neither the listing nor the Pro page describes a human handoff or team inbox. Answering from your own content through embeddings needs Pro. The Woo Basics page does not say how a shopper proves an order is theirs.

Verdict: The default pick for a technical owner who wants AI inside WordPress and will manage keys and costs.

2. Tidio: best for live chat plus AI on a busy store

Tidio is a hosted live chat and helpdesk with an AI agent called Lyro, and its WordPress plugin is best for stores that want people answering chats first, with AI taking the repeat questions.

Pricing: As of 4 November 2026, Tidio's pricing page lists a Free plan with 50 billable conversations a month (ones "that includes a message from a human agent"), 10 seats and 50 Lyro conversations once. Starter is $29 a month ($24.17 billed yearly) for 100 billable conversations. Lyro is a separate quota, counted per conversation "that has at least one reply from our AI Agent": $39 a month for 50 ($32.50 yearly), $350 for 500, $700 for 1,000.

Strengths: 70,000+ installs and 4.8 stars from 395 ratings. Agents see the visitor's cart and WooCommerce order history in the chat and can send product cards. Messenger, Instagram and email share the inbox.

Limits: The AI meter climbs fast: 500 AI conversations cost $350 a month on monthly billing. Tidio's editions page lists a one-click WooCommerce order-status template for Lyro under "Planned", so that lookup is not ready-made yet.

Verdict: A strong live chat for a store with staff on shift; budget for Lyro separately.

3. Hyve Lite: best free AI chatbot without an API key

Hyve Lite by Themeisle is a free AI chatbot plugin that answers from your WordPress posts, pages and products, and it is best for site owners who want AI answers without creating an OpenAI account.

Pricing: The free plugin includes Hyve Connect, AI hosted by Themeisle, with 500 messages a month, or you can use your own OpenAI key with no message cap. As of 4 November 2026, Hyve Pro is a one-time payment: $79 for one site, $149 for five or $279 for 50, with 10,000 Hyve Connect messages a month.

Strengths: Hyve re-indexes a page when you save it, cites sources with numbered links and, when your content does not cover a question, "Hyve says so". Conversations stay in your WordPress database. Pro adds file imports, crawling, a lead form, webhooks and read-only Skills, including order status for a signed-in customer, "with identity taken from their account rather than an order number".

Limits: There is no live chat or team inbox; a visitor who asks for a human gets Pro's lead form. When the monthly allowance runs out, "the chatbot stops replying until your quota resets". Six ratings is a thin track record.

Verdict: The easiest free start for a blog or docs site that wants cited answers and no API key.

4. PepoChat: best hosted AI agent with a team inbox and WooCommerce lookup

PepoChat is a hosted AI support agent with an official WordPress plugin, PepoCloud AI Support Agent, and it is best for sites that want AI answers, human handoff to a team inbox and WooCommerce order lookup without managing an OpenAI key.

Pricing: As of 4 November 2026, Free is $0 for 200 AI replies a month, 5 knowledge sources and one member, with every feature except new-lead emails to the team. Starter is $39 a month ($390 a year) for 2,000 replies; Growth is $149 for 10,000. Extra replies cost $10 per 1,000; team replies do not count. See the pricing page.

Strengths: A crawl of up to 200 pages counts as one knowledge source, alongside PDFs and other files. The WooCommerce integration uses a read-only key to find an order by number, or up to three orders by a full billing email. Human handoff is the moment the bot passes a conversation, with its transcript, to a person; here it lands in a built-in team inbox with an email alert, as the handoff docs describe.

Limits: Listed on 5 October 2026, the plugin has fewer than 10 installs and no reviews. The chat runs in the web widget today, with WhatsApp and Messenger in limited rollout and no phone channel. Order lookup reports status, dates and totals, not tracking numbers. PepoChat claims no SOC 2 or other certification.

Verdict: Fourth, not first: the broadest free feature set for a support team, with the least track record.

5. tawk.to: best free live chat with AI as an add-on

tawk.to is a free live chat service whose WordPress plugin runs on 100,000+ sites, and it is best for teams who will answer chats themselves at no cost and add AI for evenings and overflow.

Pricing: Live chat, ticketing and a knowledge base are free with unlimited agents; removing the branding costs $39 a month, or $348 a year. As of 4 November 2026, the AI Assist plans run from Hobby (free, 100 message credits a month) to Growth ($29 a month or $290 a year, 1,000 credits, human takeover) and up to $399. The default Auto model uses 3 credits per reply, so Hobby covers about 33 AI replies and Growth about 333.

Strengths: The biggest install base in the directory, a free inbox for any number of agents, and hired human agents at $1 an hour. The help center says the WooCommerce integration lets customers check order status, find products and create orders.

Limits: That WooCommerce integration needs a paid AI Assist plan. The plugin is tested only up to 6.9.11, two major releases behind. Credit costs differ by model.

Verdict: Unbeatable for free human chat; AI at volume costs more than the $29 headline.

6. Crisp: best for a multichannel shared inbox

Crisp is a hosted shared inbox for website chat, email, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram with an AI agent called Hugo, and its WordPress plugin is best for small teams whose customers write on several channels.

Pricing: As of 4 November 2026, Crisp's pricing page lists Free (2 seats, no AI credits), Mini at $45 a month per workspace (4 seats, $5 of AI credits, "around 90 automated conversations"), Essentials at $95 (10 seats, about 450 AI conversations, a help center) and Plus at $295 (about 1,350).

Strengths: Hugo learns from your website, help articles and files and hands conversations to the team with context. Crisp's help center lists WooCommerce among Hugo's integrations, with an optional identity check first.

Limits: No AI on the Free plan. Crisp's guide to Plus ($295) lists Hugo task automation, the tools that fetch order details, as a Plus feature without saying whether lower plans get any.

Verdict: The pick when chat is one channel of several and a small team shares the inbox.

7. MxChat: best for model choice and a one-time licence

MxChat is an AI chatbot plugin that runs inside WordPress on your own key for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek or 100+ models through OpenRouter, and it is best for owners who want to choose the model and pay once for the plugin.

Pricing: Free, plus your provider's usage. As of 4 November 2026, MxChat's site lists Pro at $69.97 for a lifetime licence, Agency at $174.97 for five keys and Agency+ at $279.97 for ten.

Strengths: 5.0 stars from 31 ratings. It trains on pages, posts, WooCommerce products, PDFs, sitemaps and YouTube videos. Its FAQ says that when the AI cannot help or a visitor asks for a person, the chat goes to your team through Slack. Transcripts show the sources and token cost of each answer.

Limits: WooCommerce order inquiries need the paid add-on. People reply from Slack, not a WordPress inbox, and the pricing section lists "Live Agent Integration" under Pro, so confirm which version you need.

Verdict: A good own-key alternative to AI Engine with Slack handoff and no yearly fee.

8. WPBot: best for button flows, lead forms and agencies

WPBot by QuantumCloud is a WordPress chatbot plugin that works with or without an AI model, mixing button menus, conversational forms and AI answers, and it is best for lead-generation sites and agencies that want scripted flows next to AI.

Pricing: Free. As of 4 November 2026, WPBot Pro costs $39 a year for one site, $99 a year for two (Professional, with the WooCommerce module) or $189 a year for five (Master, with human live chat through Slack, WhatsApp and Messenger modules and white labelling). Lifetime licences cost $149 to $369.

Strengths: 4.7 stars from 124 ratings, listed since 2018 and updated on 2 November 2026. It works with OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter models and Dialogflow, and Pro adds a vector knowledge base, Google Calendar booking and WooCommerce order statuses in the chat.

Limits: A person can take over only on Master, through Slack. Features are spread across many modules and tiers.

Verdict: Best when structured lead capture comes first and AI answers are one part of the bot.

9. Smartsupp: best for European online stores

Smartsupp is a hosted live chat for online stores with the Mira AI shopping assistant sold per conversation, and its WordPress plugin is best for European shops that want product recommendations from a feed.

Pricing: As of 4 November 2026, Smartsupp's pricing page lists Free with one operator and 25 conversations a month; Solo at $17 a month billed annually. Mira AI Agent costs $16 a month billed annually for 100 conversations, where "each unique chat session counts as one conversation", scaling to 5,000. Prices exclude VAT and are also shown in euros.

Strengths: Mira reads up to 20 website pages and a product feed of up to 30,000 products, recommends products and hands over to a human agent. WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram sit in the inbox even on Free, and the plugin listing says data is stored in the EU.

Limits: Twenty pages is a small knowledge base for a content-heavy site, and the pricing page does not describe Mira looking up WooCommerce orders.

Verdict: A good fit for a European store whose questions are "which one should I buy".

Which WordPress chatbot plugin should you choose?

Choose by who will look after the bot and whether a person must reply in the same window.

For stores, also ask what a shopper must prove before the bot shares an order: Hyve uses the signed-in account, PepoChat an order number or billing email, and Crisp offers an identity check.

What does a WordPress AI chatbot cost at 500 and 2,000 conversations a month?

At 500 AI-answered conversations a month, the cost ranges from under $100 a year for an own-key plugin on a small model to over $4,000 a year for a metered AI quota. The table assumes three AI replies per conversation.

Tool500 conversations a month2,000 conversations a monthWhat you pay for

Prices and features from each vendor's own pages, checked 4 November 2026. Crisp does not publish the rate for usage beyond the included credits.

Own-key plugins are cheapest, but the figures leave out your time, and a bot with no inbox still needs someone to answer what it cannot.

Plugin or script tag, and will a chatbot slow WordPress down?

A plugin is the better route for most WordPress sites, because it survives theme switches and gives you settings such as hiding the chat on checkout; a raw script tag suits headless builds and sites that forbid new plugins. On WordPress.com, plugins need a paid plan, as our website builders check found.

Close-up of a person's hands typing on a silver laptop keyboard at a wooden table in a bright living room
Most of these plugins install in minutes from Plugins, Add New Plugin; the real work is choosing the content the bot learns from.

On speed, our chat widget measurements of 19 October 2026 found that before any click, Crisp added 110 KB to a blank page, tawk.to 222 KB and Tidio 513 KB; PepoChat added 3.8 KB with preload off, or 527 KB in idle time by default. None changed the Lighthouse score of 100. Own-key plugins were not tested; their replies are requests your own server makes to the AI provider.

Caching is a common cause of "the chat does not show" reports; MxChat's changelog notes that a cache plugin's "Delay JavaScript" setting could keep its bot hidden until the visitor interacted, which its version 3.2.26 says it now handles. Purge the page cache after installing, and see the WordPress setup guide for the common fixes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI chatbot plugin for WordPress?
It depends on whether you want to hold an API key. As of November 2026, Hyve Lite gives 500 hosted AI messages a month with no key, AI Engine's free plugin runs on your own API key, and PepoChat's free plan includes 200 AI replies, a team inbox and WooCommerce order lookup. tawk.to is free for human live chat, but its free AI tier has only 100 credits.
Do WordPress chatbot plugins need an OpenAI API key?
Only the bring-your-own-key kind. AI Engine, MxChat and WPBot send each question to an AI provider with a key you create and pay for, often a fraction of a cent per conversation on small models. Hosted plugins such as Tidio, Crisp, tawk.to, Smartsupp and PepoChat run the model for you and bill a plan. Hyve Lite offers both: hosted credits or your own key.
Will an AI chatbot plugin slow down my WordPress site?
Usually not measurably. In our 19 October 2026 test on a blank page, 10 hosted chat widgets added between 3.8 KB and 649 KB before anyone clicked, and none changed the Lighthouse performance score of 100. The bigger risks are caching plugins that delay JavaScript, which can hide the launcher, and own-key plugins whose every reply runs through your own hosting.
Can a WordPress chatbot check WooCommerce order status?
Yes, though rarely on a free plan. As of November 2026, PepoChat's free plan looks up an order by number or billing email with a read-only key. AI Engine needs its Woo Basics add-on, Hyve needs Pro and a signed-in customer, MxChat a Pro add-on, WPBot its Professional plan and tawk.to a paid AI Assist plan. Tidio lists a ready-made Lyro template as planned.
Is a plugin or a script tag better for adding a chatbot to WordPress?
A plugin, for most sites. It survives theme switches and updates, needs no theme editing, and often adds settings such as hiding the chat on checkout or for logged-in users. A script tag in the footer fits headless or tightly controlled sites that forbid new plugins. Never use both on the same page, or the widget's code loads twice.
Are AI chatbot plugins for WordPress GDPR compliant?
No plugin is compliant by itself; it depends on how you configure and disclose it. Check where conversations are stored (your WordPress database for own-key plugins, the vendor's servers for hosted ones), which AI provider receives messages, and whether the vendor signs a data processing agreement. Smartsupp says it stores data in the EU; PepoChat claims no hosting region or certification.
