Short answer

As of October 2026, Gorgias suits Shopify stores better: it bills per ticket, $60 a month for 300 on Basic, plus $1.00 per AI-automated interaction, and its AI Agent can cancel, edit and reship Shopify orders. Zendesk's Suite Team bills $69 per agent a month plus $2.00 per verified AI resolution past 5 per agent. At 2,000 tickets, half resolved by AI, that is about $1,360 against $2,236 a month. On WooCommerce, Gorgias's AI Agent does not run.

The renewal invoice is where most store owners start this comparison. Both bills grow with the store, for different reasons: Gorgias charges for every conversation that gets a reply, and Zendesk for every person who replies plus every AI resolution it verifies.

The comparison below is for the owner or support lead of a Shopify or WooCommerce store who is choosing between the two, or deciding whether to renew. It works the monthly bill at 500, 2,000 and 10,000 tickets with every assumption shown, maps what each tool can do with Shopify and WooCommerce orders, and ends with the case where a store needs neither.

Every price and capability below was read on the vendors' own pricing pages, documentation and Shopify App Store listings on 19 October 2026, so treat them as a dated snapshot. PepoChat, which appears in the section on needing neither, is our product.

What is the difference between Gorgias and Zendesk for an online store?

The difference is what each was built to price. Gorgias assumes your support is mostly about orders, so it charges per conversation and lets anyone on the team answer; Zendesk assumes you run a support team, so it charges per person and treats store data as one integration among many.

Gorgias calls its helpdesk "designed specifically for ecommerce and Shopify". Its AI Agent is set up per connected Shopify store, its ticket sidebar changes Shopify orders, and its Flows and Order Management let shoppers track, return or cancel orders without a person. Zendesk is a ticketing-first suite, in which every request from any channel becomes a ticket with a status, an owner and routing rules; Suite Team, its first plan with live chat, adds telephony and social channels such as WhatsApp and Instagram. Our Freshdesk vs Zendesk comparison weighs Zendesk against another general helpdesk.

Two terms decide the bills. A billable ticket at Gorgias is a conversation that receives at least one message from a person, a Rule or AI Agent, counted once however long the thread runs. An automated resolution at Zendesk is a conversation its AI agent closes without a person, billed only when a verification check confirms the request was resolved.

How does Gorgias pricing compare with Zendesk pricing?

Gorgias charges for conversations and Zendesk for people, and both charge again for each conversation the AI closes. Gorgias's AI fee is half of Zendesk's pay-as-you-go rate, but every conversation the AI closes at Gorgias is also billed as a ticket.

Gorgias: per ticket, plus a fee per automated interaction

As of October 2026, Gorgias's plans are Starter at $10 a month for 50 tickets, billed monthly only, with 3 seats; Basic at $60, or $50 on annual billing, for 300 tickets; Pro at $360 or $300 for 2,000; and Advanced at $900 or $750 for 5,000. Extra tickets cost $0.40 on Starter and Basic and $0.36 on Pro and Advanced, and spam, newsletters and auto-responders are not counted.

AI Agent costs $30 a month for 30 automated interactions on Starter and Basic, $190 for 190 on Pro and $530 for 530 on Advanced: $1.00 each on monthly billing and $0.90 on annual. Gorgias's billing documentation counts an interaction when AI Agent, Flows or Order Management resolve a request and no person is needed within 72 hours. A ticket the AI closes alone pays both the ticket fee and the automation fee; one it hands over pays only the ticket fee. You can raise the allowance on the billing page, and the pricing page's structured data prices usage past it at $1.50 per interaction. Order Actions and brand-voice guardrails start on Basic.

Zendesk: per agent seat, plus a fee per verified resolution

Zendesk's seats cost $25 for Support Team, $69 for Suite Team and $149 for Suite Professional per agent a month, or $19, $55 and $115 on annual billing. AI agents are on every plan, on email everywhere and on messaging from Suite Team. Each agent seat brings 5 automated resolutions a month on the Team plans and 10 on Suite Professional, up to 10,000 a year; after that a resolution costs $1.50 committed in advance or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Zendesk's help center states the included allowance in dollars instead, $2 a seat a month on Team plans, so get the number in writing.

Since 18 May 2026, assisted escalations, where a person finished the job, and contained resolutions, which fail the verification check, have been free; only verified resolutions are billed. Verification runs 72 hours after the first email, or 2 hours after the first chat message by default. Past the allowance the AI keeps answering at $2.00 unless an admin sets it to pause. Our Zendesk AI agent guide covers the allowance mechanics in depth.

How Gorgias counts tickets and AI Agent interactions, and why one automated answer uses both, is explained in Gorgias pricing explained.

What do 500, 2,000 and 10,000 tickets a month cost?

At list prices, with half of all tickets resolved by AI, Gorgias costs about $390, $1,360 and $7,700 a month at 500, 2,000 and 10,000 tickets, and Zendesk Suite Team about $618, $2,236 and $10,590, on these assumptions:

  • Tickets are conversations with at least one reply, which is Gorgias's billing definition.
  • Half are resolved by the AI with no person involved: 250, 1,000 and 5,000 a month. Gorgias's AI Agent page shows 48% to 53% of conversations automated across five store categories; the ticket deflection benchmarks explain why your rate may differ.
  • People: 2, 4 and 10 agents answer the rest, and only Zendesk charges for them.
  • Gorgias: the cheapest plan that covers the tickets, plus ticket overage, and an AI allowance sized to the volume.
  • Zendesk: Suite Team, the first plan whose AI agent answers website chat, with 5 included resolutions per agent.
  • Left out: taxes, Voice and SMS add-ons, phone numbers, Copilot and negotiated discounts.

Last verified 19 October 2026. Estimates from published list prices, not quotes. The annual column uses annual plan prices, $0.90 per Gorgias interaction and $1.50 per committed Zendesk resolution: for example, 4 × $55 + 980 × $1.50 = $1,690.

Gorgias is cheaper at every volume when the AI resolves half. Its AI unit costs half as much and its seats are included; at 2,000 tickets Zendesk costs 64% more on monthly billing.

The AI line is most of both bills. It makes up 64% to 74% of the Gorgias totals and 78% to 93% of the Zendesk totals, so comparing plan prices compares the small number.

The crossover is your AI rate, and it rises with volume. On monthly billing, Zendesk is cheaper only below about 22 AI resolutions a month at 500 tickets, 124 at 2,000 and 2,110 at 10,000, which is 21% of tickets; on annual billing the last figure rises to about 3,460, or 35%. With little automation Gorgias costs more: its $2,700 helpdesk line at 10,000 tickets would buy 39 Suite Team seats.

Four adjustments matter. Keeping Pro's bundled 190 interactions and letting 810 more run at $1.50 makes the 2,000-ticket AI line $1,405 instead of $1,000. Gorgias's plan table lists $0.85 per interaction on Advanced, which would cut the 10,000-ticket annual total to $6,800. An email-only store on Zendesk Support Team, whose AI agents also answer email, pays $2,060 rather than $2,236 at 2,000 tickets. And Gorgias offers custom plans above 5,000 conversations a month, so its 10,000 row is an upper estimate; our AI support pricing index marks that cell not computable for the same reason.

Which handles Shopify and WooCommerce orders better?

On Shopify, Gorgias goes deepest: agents edit, cancel and refund orders from the ticket, and AI Agent cancels, changes and reships orders on its own. On WooCommerce, Gorgias shows orders to agents only, and Zendesk reaches the store through workflows you build.

Gorgias on Shopify: the deepest order handling

Gorgias's Shopify sidebar lets an agent create, duplicate, edit, cancel and refund orders, make draft orders, change the shipping address and see live stock; editing excludes archived orders and orders older than 60 days. AI Agent's Shopify Actions cancel an unfulfilled order with a full refund, update an address before fulfilment, remove or swap an item, reship a lost or damaged order for free and add an order note, from a library Gorgias puts at more than 130 actions. One caution: a cancellation made in Shopify is not passed to your 3PL, so Gorgias suggests an order-age condition or a separate ShipStation, ShipMonk or ShipBob action. Test any setup on the questions in our order status guide.

Gorgias on WooCommerce: order context for agents only

On WooCommerce, Gorgias is a helpdesk with order context: the sidebar shows a customer's contact details, order value and payment status, synced continuously. Gorgias's WooCommerce 101 article says agents cannot create, edit, cancel or refund WooCommerce orders, that store data cannot drive Rules and that automation features do not work with the integration. The compatibility table, last updated about eight months before our check, marks AI Agent, Flows and Order Management as unsupported for WooCommerce and PrestaShop. AI Agent does not run on BigCommerce or Magento either, though Flows do.

Zendesk on Shopify and WooCommerce: an agent app plus building blocks

Zendesk's Shopify app shows an agent the requester's orders, matched by email or phone number, with order value, payment and fulfilment status and tracking numbers, and lets the agent refund an order or cancel an unfulfilled one from the ticket; editing an order is not described. In September 2026 Zendesk added Shopify actions to its action flows, for order lookup, customers, products, return eligibility and legal policies, and a WooCommerce connector that looks up and searches customers, orders and products. An AI agent can call those flows, but you build the procedure and the flow, and the action builder connects to one instance of each external system, so a second store needs another route. An agentic shopping assistant for Shopify storefronts entered early access on 12 October 2026.

Every parcel in transit is a possible where-is-my-order ticket. On Shopify, Gorgias's AI Agent can answer and act on it; on WooCommerce, Gorgias's AI Agent does not run and Zendesk's needs a flow you build.

How do Gorgias AI Agent and Zendesk AI agents differ?

Gorgias sells an AI agent already shaped for a Shopify store; Zendesk sells an AI platform you shape yourself. Both answer in more than 80 languages and hand a conversation to a person when they should.

Gorgias's AI Agent runs one agent per Shopify store, reads your help center, website, documents, guidance and Shopify data, and doubles as a shopping assistant that recommends products and offers discounts. Gorgias's documentation, updated in mid-October 2026, lists it on email, chat, SMS with the SMS add-on, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, each for Shopify stores. Zendesk's AI agents, included on every plan, are built from natural-language procedures and, since June 2026, can run action flows without using the plan's action credits.

The billing rules differ where it hurts. A shopper who gets an unhelpful answer and leaves without asking for a person counts as automated under Gorgias's rule, because no person was needed within 72 hours; Zendesk's verification check exists to catch conversations like that and leave them unbilled. On both, the cheapest conversation is a correct one, so run our twelve ecommerce chatbot questions before launch.

Apps, channels and seats: which ecosystem fits a store?

Zendesk has the bigger marketplace; Gorgias has the store-specific one, and it includes up to 500 seats from Basic where Zendesk charges for every agent.

Gorgias's plan table lists more than 150 app integrations, and its Shopify listing names Recharge, Loop Returns, Klaviyo and AfterShip among them. BigCommerce starts on Basic, Magento on Pro, and Voice and SMS are paid add-ons. Zendesk's pricing page lists more than 1,000 prebuilt apps and integrations, and Suite Team includes live chat, telephony and Facebook, Instagram, X and WhatsApp. Zendesk's Shopify App Store listing still shows a Suite Growth plan at $89 a seat that its own pricing page no longer lists, so price from the pricing page.

Where each one clearly wins

In these situations the choice is not close.

Choose Gorgias when

  • You sell on Shopify and most tickets are about orders: the sidebar and AI Agent act on orders with no custom work.
  • Several people or seasonal staff answer tickets, since seats from Basic are included.
  • Your AI will resolve a real share of tickets: at half, Gorgias cost less at every volume in the table.
  • Shoppers write by SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger and you want one AI agent on all of them.

Choose Zendesk when

  • You sell outside Shopify, or ecommerce is one part of a wider operation with phone lines and several brands.
  • Volume is high, the team is small and automation is low, so seats cost less than tickets.
  • You want to pay only for AI answers a verification check confirms, and to pause the AI at a budget.
  • You need the larger marketplace, or telephony and omnichannel routing on one plan.

When you need neither Gorgias nor Zendesk

If your store has one to five people, most questions arrive on your website and a shared mailbox handles the rest, a standalone AI support agent on the website plus your existing mailbox covers the work for a fraction of either bill. Our Shopify chatbot comparison and WooCommerce chatbot comparison compare eight options for each platform.

PepoChat is one such tool, and we make it, so weigh this section accordingly. It is an AI support agent that answers from your own knowledge base, built from a crawl of up to 200 pages, documents, Notion or Google Drive, and it checks a Shopify order's payment and fulfilment status by order number, or WooCommerce orders by number or by the email used to buy. Every feature except new-lead emails is on the free plan, which includes 200 AI replies a month. Starter is $49 a month for 2,000 replies and 3 members, and Growth $149 for 10,000 replies and 10 members, with $10 per 1,000 replies past the allowance; the pricing page has the details.

The email half is one setting. With Team availability set to "No one answers live chat, we follow up by email", the agent never promises a person: when it cannot help, it asks once for an email address and hands the conversation over, as the human handoff docs describe. The team gets an email, "A visitor needs a person", with the last three messages and a Reply by email button. Replies typed in the team inbox are not emailed to the shopper, so answer through that button.

At two AI replies per conversation, 500 conversations fit inside Starter for $49 a month, and 2,000 cost $69 with overage, or $84 with a fourth member. At 10,000, Growth plus overage is $249, but a store that size needs a helpdesk anyway, so read that as the website layer only.

The limits are real. PepoChat is not a helpdesk: it has no email ticketing, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger channel, no macros or SLAs and no published SOC 2 or ISO report, and its order actions report status but never cancel, edit or refund. Lookups are not gated by visitor verification, so for sequential WooCommerce order numbers the WooCommerce docs suggest keeping only the email lookup. The Gorgias alternative and Zendesk alternative pages compare each tool with PepoChat feature by feature.

Stores already on Zendesk can keep it behind the website: PepoChat's Zendesk action files a ticket with an AI-written summary and the shopper's email, as our helpdesk ticket guide shows, so a website chat the agent resolves never becomes a billed Zendesk resolution. There is no Gorgias action, so a Gorgias store would split by channel: PepoChat on the website, Gorgias for email and social.

A one-person store needs neither routing rules nor seat licences: it needs answers on the website at night and a clean hand-over to email in the morning.

What to do next

Before the renewal call, pull three numbers from last month: tickets answered, the share closed without a person, and the people who answered. Run them through the table at your real AI rate, ask Gorgias to price an AI allowance for that volume and Zendesk for a committed rate, and compare 30 tools in our AI support pricing index. If neither fits, create a free PepoChat workspace, connect Shopify or WooCommerce with a read-only key, and run it beside your mailbox for a month.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gorgias or Zendesk better for a Shopify store?
For most Shopify stores Gorgias is the better fit. As of October 2026 its AI Agent and ticket sidebar can cancel, edit, refund and reship Shopify orders without custom work, and seats are included from Basic. Zendesk's Shopify app shows orders and handles refunds and cancellations for agents, but AI order actions need action flows you build. Zendesk suits stores with phone, many brands or little automation.
How much does Gorgias cost per ticket?
As of October 2026, Gorgias Basic costs $60 a month for 300 tickets, about $0.20 each, and extra tickets cost $0.40; Pro is $360 for 2,000, or $0.18 each, with extras at $0.36. A ticket is any conversation that gets a reply from a person, a Rule or AI Agent. AI Agent adds $1.00 per automated interaction on monthly billing, and each one also counts as a ticket.
Is Gorgias worth it for a small store?
That depends on where questions arrive. As of October 2026, Gorgias Starter is $10 a month for 50 tickets and 3 seats, but has no AI order actions, and Basic with AI Agent starts at $90 a month on monthly billing. A store with a few hundred orders a month whose questions come through its website may do better with a standalone AI support agent and a shared mailbox.
Does Gorgias AI Agent work with WooCommerce?
No. As of October 2026, Gorgias's compatibility table marks AI Agent, Flows and Order Management as not supported for WooCommerce and PrestaShop stores. The WooCommerce integration shows agents a customer's contact details, order value and payment status in the ticket sidebar, but agents cannot create, edit, cancel or refund WooCommerce orders from Gorgias, and WooCommerce data cannot be used in Rules.
Is Zendesk good for a small ecommerce business?
Zendesk works for a small store but is priced per agent: as of October 2026 Suite Team, the first plan with live chat, costs $69 an agent a month or $55 on annual billing, plus $2.00 per verified AI resolution after 5 included per agent. Its Shopify app handles refunds and cancellations for agents, while AI order lookups need action flows you build.
Do I need Gorgias or Zendesk at all for my online store?
Not always. For a small team whose questions arrive on the website, a standalone AI support agent plus a shared mailbox can do the job. PepoChat, our product, checks Shopify and WooCommerce order status on every plan, including a free plan with 200 AI replies a month, and emails your team when a person is needed. As of October 2026, Starter is $49 a month for 2,000 replies.
