Short answer

As of November 2026, the best Intercom alternative depends on why you are leaving. Help Scout is the closest full replacement for a small team, from $25 a user a month with AI resolutions at $0.75. Zendesk suits teams that need phone, SLAs and many channels, from $55 an agent. Crisp prices per workspace: ten seats and messaging apps for $95 a month. PepoChat is the flat-priced pick for website-only support, free to start, then $39 a month.

Intercom is a strong product with a bill that has two meters: a price per seat and a price per AI outcome. For a team of two to ten people, the second meter usually starts the search.

This guide is for founders and support leads on Intercom, or about to sign, who want to know what else fits. "Best" means the tool that fixes your reason for leaving without dropping what you rely on.

PepoChat is our product; we include it where it fits and say where other tools are the better choice. Facts below were checked on vendor pages on 4 November 2026.

Best Intercom alternatives compared (November 2026)

Nine tools replace some or all of Intercom for a smaller team, and they differ most in how they bill the AI agent: per resolution, per session, per credit, or flat.

Why do teams leave Intercom?

Teams leave Intercom for four reasons: the AI bill rises with every resolution, seats get expensive as you add features, annual seat counts are hard to cut mid-term, and the product does more than a small team uses.

A Fin outcome is Intercom's billing unit for its AI agent: $0.99 each time a customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin responds, or Fin completes a Procedure, handoffs included, charged once per conversation, per the Intercom pricing page. That is resolution-based pricing, where you pay per conversation the AI closes, so a better knowledge base raises the bill. The Fin pricing page also bills disqualifications and self-serve routings at $0.99 and lead qualifications at $9.99. Our Fin pricing breakdown works it at three rates.

On seats, Intercom's plans and features article lists Essential at $29 a month on annual billing or $39 monthly, Advanced at $85 or $99, and Expert at $132 or $139; the pricing page also shows a $19 new-customer price on Essential. Workflows and round-robin assignment start on Advanced, SLAs and SSO on Expert.

On terms, no contract is required, but the pricing FAQ says downgrades "typically take effect at renewal". And the bill sprawls: Copilot at $29 an agent annually, the Pro add-on from $100 a month, Proactive Support Plus, and usage charges for WhatsApp, SMS and phone.

If the Fin line is the problem, shortlist PepoChat, Crisp, Chatwoot or Help Scout. If seats are, look at Crisp, Tidio or Gorgias. If complexity is, Help Scout or Crisp.

How we chose these Intercom alternatives

We compared tools that replace what a small team uses in Intercom on five criteria:

  1. Coverage: a shared inbox, live chat, a knowledge base and an AI agent that hands off to people.
  2. AI pricing unit: what counts as a billable resolution, session or reply.
  3. Seat cost: the price per person and the seats a plan includes.
  4. Channels: email, chat, messaging apps and phone.
  5. Commitment: free plan, trial and monthly billing.

We read each vendor's pricing page, help center and integration docs on 4 November 2026 and compared them on the criteria above. We did not run paid trials, so the cost estimates are arithmetic on list prices, not invoices.

1. Help Scout: best overall Intercom alternative for small teams

Help Scout is a shared inbox with a help center, live chat and Scout, the AI agent in its Envoy add-on, and Help Scout is the best Intercom alternative for a small team that wants to replace the whole inbox, email included, for less.

Pricing: As of 4 November 2026, Standard is $25 a user a month, Plus $45 and Pro $75 on annual billing, with a 10-user minimum on Pro. The free plan covers 5 users, one inbox, one Docs site and 100 contacts a month. Scout costs $0.75 per resolution; Help Scout's AI resolutions article defines one as "a single AI chat session that is resolved without help from a human", and new customers get three months of it free.

Strengths: Standard includes live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger beside email. A monthly resolution cap switches Scout off in the Beacon widget when reached. Plus adds round-robin routing; Pro includes SSO and HIPAA, both sold as add-ons on Plus.

Limits: Phone runs through an integration. Scout cannot act in other apps yet, such as looking up an order; Help Scout lists app connections as coming soon. The AI is still a per-resolution meter, cheaper than Fin but growing with success.

Verdict: The closest like-for-like swap for a two-to-ten person team that lives in email and chat.

2. Zendesk: best for teams that need phone, SLAs and many channels

Zendesk is a ticketing-first customer service suite with AI agents included in every plan, and Zendesk is the best Intercom alternative for a growing team that needs phone, routing and SLAs across many channels.

Pricing: The Zendesk pricing page lists Support Team at $19 an agent a month on annual billing ($25 monthly) for email and ticketing, Suite Team at $55 ($69) with messaging, live chat and telephony, and Suite Professional at $115 ($149). Team plans include 5 automated resolutions per agent a month and Professional 10; extra resolutions cost $1.50 each committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.

Strengths: On Suite plans, email, live chat, messaging and telephony land in one ticket queue, and Suite Professional adds SLAs, IVR, and group, overflow and after-hours call routing.

Limits: Past the small allowance, a Zendesk resolution costs more than a Fin outcome. Text messages and phone numbers are add-ons. Setup and administration are heavier than a small team usually wants.

Verdict: Move to Zendesk for capability, not to cut the AI bill; our Intercom vs Zendesk comparison works a four-person bill on both.

3. Crisp: best flat-priced multichannel inbox

Crisp is a customer messaging platform priced per workspace rather than per seat, and Crisp is the best Intercom alternative for a small team that wants chat, email and messaging apps in one inbox at a flat monthly price.

Pricing: As of 4 November 2026, Free has 2 seats and the chat widget with no AI credits. Mini is $45 a month for 4 seats, a shared email inbox and $5 of AI credits, about 90 automated conversations. Essentials is $95 for 10 seats, $25 of credits (about 450 conversations), WhatsApp Business, Instagram DMs and SMS. Plus is $295 for 20 or more seats. Yearly prices are not published.

Strengths: Seats are bundled. Hugo, the AI agent, learns from web pages, knowledge base articles, files and Q&A snippets, and Crisp's Hugo billing article puts a full AI-handled conversation at about $0.05 to $0.10.

Limits: Credits are token-based, so cost per conversation varies. Without Pay-As-You-Go, Hugo stops when credits run out and new conversations go to people. Hugo actions such as order lookups are positioned on Plus at $295.

Verdict: The most seats and channels per dollar; our Crisp vs Intercom comparison goes deeper.

4. PepoChat: best for website-first teams that want flat AI pricing

PepoChat is an AI support agent for websites with a team inbox built in, and PepoChat is the best Intercom alternative for a team whose support arrives through its website and wants the AI agent and inbox on a flat plan.

Pricing: Free covers 200 AI replies a month, 5 knowledge sources and one member. Starter is $39 a month or $390 a year for 2,000 replies and 3 members; Growth is $149 or $1,490 for 10,000 replies, 10 members and no PepoChat branding. Extra replies cost $10 per 1,000. Every feature is on every plan except new-lead emails, and no card is needed to start.

Strengths: There is no per-resolution fee, so a resolved chat costs the same as an escalated one. Human handoff is the moment the AI agent passes a conversation to a person with the transcript; here it lands in a team inbox with assignment, tags, macros and internal notes, plus an email alert. It learns from your site, files, Notion and Google Drive and runs 22 prebuilt actions, such as Shopify order status.

Limits: The chat runs in a web widget today, with WhatsApp and Messenger in limited rollout; there is no email, SMS, Instagram or phone channel. Voice runs on your own Vapi account, apart from the chat knowledge base and inbox. There is no native mobile app, no published SOC 2, ISO or HIPAA, and, as a young product, few public reviews.

Verdict: It replaces Intercom's Messenger and Fin on your website, not its email and messaging inbox, which is why it ranks fourth.

5. Freshdesk Omni: best for low-cost helpdesk seats with chat

Freshdesk Omni is the version of Freshworks' helpdesk with live chat, WhatsApp and Instagram beside email, and Freshdesk Omni is the best Intercom alternative for a cost-conscious team that wants ticketing seats with an AI agent sold in session packs.

Pricing: As of 4 November 2026, Growth is $29 an agent a month, Pro $79 and Enterprise $119 on annual billing ($35, $95 and $143 monthly). The Freddy AI Agent comes with 500 sessions once per account, then $49 per 100. Freshworks defines a session as "a unique interaction between an end-user and an AI Agent", with everything inside 24 hours on chat counted as one.

Strengths: Every plan includes SLA management, AI-powered workflow automations and a customer portal with a knowledge base; Pro adds round-robin and intelligent routing.

Limits: A session is billed whether or not the AI resolves it, the 500 included sessions do not renew, and when sessions run out the AI stops and chats go to people. The plain Freshdesk tiers have no live chat, so you need Omni to replace the Messenger. There is only a 14-day trial.

Verdict: A budget helpdesk whose AI line tracks volume, not success.

Most switches start with a spreadsheet: seats, AI units and channels for each tool, priced at your own conversation volume.

6. HubSpot Service Hub: best if your CRM is already HubSpot

HubSpot Service Hub is the help desk inside HubSpot's CRM, and its Customer Agent makes HubSpot the best Intercom alternative for a team whose sales and marketing already run on HubSpot.

Pricing: The Customer Agent needs a Professional or Enterprise edition of any hub, Smart CRM included. Service Hub Professional is $90 a seat a month on annual billing ($100 monthly) with a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee and 3,000 credits a month; Smart CRM Professional, at $45 a seat annually, is the cheapest route. The agent uses 50 credits per resolution, and a credit costs $0.010, so a resolution is $0.50. Credits reset monthly.

Strengths: HubSpot says the agent is trained on your knowledge base, website, CRM data and past conversations, and works across chat, email, WhatsApp and Messenger. A resolution counts only when the agent shared a source or took an action and the visitor did not ask for a person within 72 hours.

Limits: The Professional floor makes the first year expensive for three people. When included credits run out and you have not bought more, the agent stops taking new conversations until the monthly reset.

Verdict: Worth it when the CRM record matters more than the support bill; see HubSpot vs Intercom.

7. Tidio: best for small stores that want live chat first

Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk tool with an AI agent called Lyro, and Tidio is the best Intercom alternative for a small online store that wants people on chat first and AI as a separately metered add-on.

Pricing: The Tidio pricing page lists Free with 50 billable conversations and 10 seats, Starter at $24.17 a month on annual billing ($29 monthly) for 100, and Growth from $49.17 for 250. A billable conversation includes a message from a human agent; Lyro replies do not count. Lyro's first 50 conversations are free once, the add-on starts at $32.50 a month for 50, and the page's calculator lists 500 Lyro conversations at $350 a month on monthly billing.

Strengths: Ten seats on Free, Starter and Growth, and Lyro can be bought on its own, without a chat plan.

Limits: Two meters to forecast. At 500 AI conversations, Lyro works out to $0.70 each on monthly billing. Native Shopify actions start on Growth, but Lyro's own order-status template needs Plus or Premium.

Verdict: A good fit when humans answer most chats; less so when AI should carry the volume.

8. Gorgias: best Intercom alternative for Shopify stores

Gorgias is a helpdesk and AI Agent built for online stores, and Gorgias is the best Intercom alternative only if you sell on Shopify, since its AI Agent needs a connected Shopify store.

Pricing: Gorgias bills by ticket: Starter is $10 a month, monthly only, for 50 tickets; Basic $60 ($50 annual) for 300; Pro $360 ($300) for 2,000; extra tickets cost $0.36 to $0.40. AI Agent costs $1.00 per automated interaction on monthly contracts and $0.90 on annual, sold in bundles (30 on Basic, 190 on Pro) with $1.50 past the bundle, and each automated interaction also counts as a ticket. The trial is 7 days with no payment details.

Strengths: An automated interaction is one "fully resolved without a human agent", whether by AI Agent, Flows, Quick Responses or Order Management; if an agent replies within 72 hours it is billed as a ticket instead. Basic and above include 500 seats.

Limits: A SaaS team gets little from it, and the double meter needs watching.

Verdict: The right swap for a store; the wrong one for anyone else.

9. Chatwoot: best open-source, self-hosted Intercom alternative

Chatwoot is an open-source customer support platform that you can run on your own servers or use as a cloud service, and Chatwoot is the best Intercom alternative for a technical team that wants to own its data and its bill.

Pricing: On Chatwoot Cloud, Hacker is free for 2 agents and 500 conversations a month, live chat only. Startups is $19 an agent a month with all channels and 300 Captain AI credits, Business $39 with 500, Enterprise $99 with 800; extra credits are $20 per 1,000, and each AI reply uses one credit. Self-hosted, the Community Edition is free forever but excludes Captain AI, voice, branding, SSO and SLA policies; Premium Support at $19 an agent adds Captain on your own OpenAI key.

Strengths: Your data stays on infrastructure you choose. Every paid cloud plan includes all channels, and extra AI replies cost $0.02 each.

Limits: Self-hosting makes servers, upgrades and backups your job. The free edition has no AI agent.

Verdict: The cheapest route for an engineering-led team.

What does each Intercom alternative cost for 3 seats and 500 AI conversations?

For a three-person team whose AI handles 500 conversations a month, the estimates run from $39 on PepoChat to about $893 on Zendesk Suite Team, against about $582 on Intercom Essential.

Assumptions: three agents; 500 conversations a month that the AI handles to the end, each counted as a resolution where a vendor bills that way; two AI replies per conversation where a vendor bills per reply; annual billing where offered; list prices without discounts; SMS, phone and tax left out. These are estimates, not quotes.

Prices from each vendor's own pages, checked 4 November 2026. The Gorgias line uses the published 30-interaction Basic bundle; ask about a larger one.

The per-resolution tools, Intercom, Zendesk, Help Scout and HubSpot, cost more as the AI improves: double the volume and the AI line doubles. PepoChat's Starter covers 1,000 such conversations for the same $39. Intercom's Early Stage program gives eligible startups the Advanced plan from $65 a month in year one with 300 free Fin outcomes a month, and Help Scout gives new customers three months of Scout free.

What do you give up when you leave Intercom?

You give up four things when you leave Intercom: in-app product tours and outbound messages, Fin's track record, one AI agent across every channel, and published certifications.

Product tours and outbound. Intercom's Proactive Support Plus add-on, $99 a month for 500 messages, covers Product Tours, Surveys, in-app messages and mobile push. The alternatives above are support tools first.

Fin's track record. Intercom says Fin averages a 76% resolution rate across more than 12,000 customers. That is Intercom's figure on its own definition, and vendors count resolutions differently, as our comparison of resolution definitions shows.

One agent on every channel. Fin answers on chat, email, voice, Slack and social from one setup. If the inbox is your problem rather than Fin, Intercom sells Fin on Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Zoho, Gorgias, Front, Dixa and Sprinklr, with a 50-outcome monthly minimum.

Paperwork. Intercom lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27018, 27701 and 42001 and HIPAA, with hosting in the US, EU or Australia. If procurement needs those, check each alternative's trust page; PepoChat publishes none of them.

Before you cancel, list what you use in Intercom today: tours, outbound, channels and certifications, then tick each one off against the new tool.

How hard is it to move off Intercom?

Moving off Intercom takes a small team about two weeks: export, rebuild, test, then cut over.

Export conversations, contacts and help articles while the account is live. Rebuild the knowledge base from the help center and documents Fin used, test your 20 most common questions, then swap the Messenger snippet before renewal. The live chat migration checklist lists what each vendor lets you export.

Ask every vendor four questions before you sign: how is a billable resolution or session defined, what happens when the allowance runs out, can you cap spend, and can you export transcripts if you leave?

Which Intercom alternative should you choose?

Choose by your reason for leaving and your customers' channels, not by feature count.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Intercom alternative for a small business?
As of November 2026, Help Scout is the closest full replacement for a small team: a shared inbox with email, live chat and messaging apps from $25 a user a month, and AI resolutions at $0.75 instead of Fin's $0.99. If your support happens on your website, PepoChat is the flat-priced option, free to start and $39 a month for 2,000 AI replies.
Is there a free Intercom alternative?
Yes, several. Help Scout's free plan covers 5 users and one inbox, Crisp's covers 2 seats without AI credits, Chatwoot Cloud is free for 2 agents, and Tidio's free plan includes 50 human-handled conversations a month. PepoChat's free plan includes 200 AI replies a month with the team inbox and human handoff. Intercom itself offers a 14-day trial, not a free plan.
Why is Intercom so expensive?
Intercom charges twice: per seat, from $29 a month on annual Essential to $132 on Expert, and $0.99 for every Fin outcome, which counts when a customer confirms a fix, stops asking after Fin answers, or Fin completes a Procedure. Add-ons such as Copilot, Pro and Proactive Support Plus, plus usage-billed WhatsApp, SMS and phone, add further lines.
Can I use Fin without Intercom's inbox?
Yes. As of November 2026, Intercom sells Fin on top of other helpdesks, including Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Zoho, Gorgias, Front, Dixa and Sprinklr, at the same $0.99 per outcome with a minimum of 50 outcomes a month and no Intercom seats. That suits a team that likes Fin's answers but wants to keep or move to a different inbox.
How hard is it to migrate from Intercom?
For a small team it takes about two weeks. Export conversations, contacts and help articles while the account is live, rebuild the new AI agent's knowledge base from the same help center and documents, test on a staging page, then swap the Messenger snippet in one deploy. Intercom downgrades take effect at renewal, so time the switch to your billing date.
Is Zendesk cheaper than Intercom?
Usually not for AI-heavy support. Zendesk Suite Team, the plan with live chat, is $55 an agent a month on annual billing, between Intercom Essential at $29 and Advanced at $85. Zendesk includes 5 automated resolutions per agent a month, then charges $1.50 to $2.00 each, more than Fin's $0.99. For three agents and 500 AI resolutions, that is about $893 against $582.
